Your ignition system is the backbone of your engine. Without Spark plugs, ignition coils and the distributor, your car would not be able to ignite the crucial fuel-air mixture. You wouldn’t go anywhere without ignition buddy! Join Bart as he explores your car’s ignition system and its components.
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.
Some of our best videos ever are coming out soon, stay tuned so you won't miss a thing!

You have a better grip on the ground when the tires are move at the same speed as the road surface, called static friction. If your wheels start to go faster or slower than the surface of the road you lose a small amount of grip, so what ABS does is constantly try to maximize the static friction force by finding the breaking point and staying just below it so that you don't just slide along the road.

I'll admit, I'm not a huge car guy. But if you make a video that looks at any topic from a scientific point of view, that's going to make me a lot more interested in that topic. And this was really well done. Actually, what I've seen of this whole science garage playlist is pretty damn good so far. And I'll even admit that I enjoyed all of the non-science videos I've seen so far, too. So for a channel to take a topic I had little interest in and actually got me to enjoy that topic, even without throwing science into the mix. That says a LOT about the quality of the content you produce. In other words, you guys have just earned yourselves a sub. Cheers. And keep pumping out these great videos (preferably about sciencey stuff.) =P
@metanumia
@metanumia 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for another great episode of Science Garage, @Donut Media, I always eagerly anticipate these! I have a suggestion for your production team, in your past two videos the dynamic range of your audio tracks on the videos has been very high. In other words, the difference between the loudest sounds (like a shout) and the quietest sounds (like dialogue) is very high. This makes it difficult for the average viewer to hear regular dialogue at a normal audio volume, so the viewer turns up the volume to hear it, then when a sudden, short, loud sound occurs it is *very* loud for the viewer so they need to turn down the volume of their speakers, thus making it difficult to hear regular dialogue again, and so on. For action-packed videos, like a sci-fi space battle, viewers will likely enjoy having their speakers set to a high volume for the duration of the video, but for comedy, educational, and other dialogue-focused videos it can be uncomfortable to listen to and hard to understand. So, for the editors or whomever works on the digital assembly of your videos, I recommend they apply a "normalizer" and or "compressor" filter to the audio track, which makes the quiet sounds (dialogue) louder and the loud sounds (sound effects/explosions/shouting etc...) quieter. Most video production software comes with a simple audio track compressor filter that can be quickly and easily applied in post-production/editing that will make the audio of your videos more consistent. Just a suggestion from a frequent viewer, lover of Donut, and car fanatic, keep up the great work, guys! :D

did he talk about gapping the plugs? sometimes plugs get banged around, and the ground strap may be closer or further away from the electrode, so you can use feeler guages to "spec" them so they are all the same gap distance which helps with fine tuning spark timing for high performance applications

I noticed that as well. Looked like a 009. I thought that when he first showed it, even without seeing the drive mechanism at the base. Dead giveaway was when he had all the plug wires attached and they had the rubber grommets at the plug ends to seal off the cooling tins. Not surprising though, it's probably the most commonly seen classic car old enough to have such a points-distributor system. Likewise, if you google how to set ignition timing, without specifying the car type, most of the results are describing how to do it on a Bug, though the basic idea is applicable to any car that uses such a system.

@@bugaddiction71 Yep, 009s are cheap - but they suck. SVDA is best short of anything fully electronically controlled. When I first got my Bug it had a 009, got an SVDA after a while which improved drivability notably. Added electronic trigger, which made it run significantly better - wasn't expecting that. Then converted to fuel injection, used electronically controlled distributor. Then switched to a wasted spark coil pack, then wasted spark LS coils.
@justbuggin67
@justbuggin67 5 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing. As soon as I saw the distributor I thought, “hey that’s a 009!” Too bad it’s a Chinese one. You can’t get those to run worth a crap. That’s why I rebuild the old vacuum advanced distributors. Been running my rebuilt 205T in my 69 bug for 4 years now.

Hey man, thanks for your videos. They're so well produced and easy to understand from the ground up. Which is great for me because guess who doesn't have a dad but still wants to be mechanically literate? Cheers

You do an excellent job of explaining the rudimentary principals and continuing through the advanced stages. you make it entertaining and educational, no offense but like a Pixar movie it entertains/educates the young and the old. Thanks keep up the good work

I love all these videos, thanks for making them man. The auto store scenes got me wondering tho.. What percentage of a car could you amass from the store?

We need a video on engine displacement, oversquare, undersquare, pros and cons of each type, boring and stroking an engine, etc. You could also put these along with other stuff on a video about engine blocks
