Hi. Thanks for the update, long overdue. When I got my pioneer platform I picked 1 size smaller and the new backbone mount system. It gives 30% more more load rating and 100% less wind noise than the big one. Still looks reasonable too. They also now do an air deflector, about time! You haven't done a ladder to get up top?

I find it amusing that you call out reliability of the defender. The context for this is that we met at the Myall lakes several years ago (had the puma with the DOT trailer). You wondered why I upgraded my TD5 to a puma. I've now owned 5 old school land rovers. Series 3, stage 1, 1986 naturally aspirated 90, 2001 TD5 and the puma. With the exception of the 86 normally aspirated 90 the puma has been bullet proof with over 150k KMs mostly of outback touring. The 86 90 we did over 500k (miles yes miles not km) in with only a head gasket leak and a wheel bearing problems (ex MoD police KFOR) yet it saw most of Africa, Europe, central Asia, Siberia etc. The TD5 was great for power but it suffered from landroverisms where it just did not suit Australian conditions. We bought ours at 100k and sold it at 225k and in that time, gearbox, head, gaskets.... The list goes on.. and on... and on.. In regards to remote mechanics the landroverisms is actually the problem, many that I have met and had beers with are scared because there are only a few defenders and yet there are so many different parts for seemingly the same car. I was told of one case where the mechanic took four attempts to get the correct part that fit on the customers 110 because there was such a catastrophe of parts and bitsa's. Now we are at the point where the family has grown (3 kids) we are looking for something bigger too. The options are limited/non existent. Currently looking at real trucks (gvm greater than 8t) as we are currently looking at doing another 12 month trip through southern Asia, central Asia, Russia and Scandinavia with the kids (2020) The current planned trip will cross our millionth mile touring.

Brilliant research and set up. Looks like a quality build, and capable. Your future Canning trip will be a big test and proud ‘brag’ point when you make it through. My experience personally and from assisting others through the CSR and surrounds has taught me. Failure points... Long range fuel tanks. Any electrical work other than standard. Suspension geometry diverting from standard. Any weight above what the manufacturers originally accounted for. Any speeds above what a standard vehicle would achieve. The one biggest failure commonality is weight. If your factory gvm is XYZZ.... stay under it. A piece of paper ‘saying it can’.....unfortunately CSR can’t read. Enjoy all your videos and look forward to you proving to yourself just how awesome your ‘super tourer’ is 👍
@AlloffroadAu5 жыл бұрын
yep, I agree though I think the double Simpson Crossing this year with 9 days without tracks was a pretty good test, I doubt that anything on the Canning will match that but 9 days is different then 1800ks and it was with a different suspension set up. We will see it will be the ultimate test I guess but to be honest, I'm not too worried .... the Cruiser will have a round of dieting before the trip and I will try to keep my weight well below my 4.2t GVM that is for sure

@mash9885 жыл бұрын
Very nice build Stefan! My feeling is most builders / modifiers go overboard, I prefer to keep my vehicle stock as possible and as light as possible - not to say that you have, but I just feel that most mods don't really provide the degree of increase in performance perceived, and they add more things to go wrong when you're out in the bush. And out here, it can be even worse with the nearest COMPETENT garage a VERY long way away. I also have a 105 (2006) but with the standard 1HZ diesel - bit slow on the hills but otherwise capable in almost all terrains except "playing" in the dunes (which I'm not into anyway). I would probably prefer a 1HDFTE but VERY difficult to find it here (South Africa), and then it costs a lot, too much for me. Enjoy your vehicle and enjoy the adventures!!
@AlloffroadAu5 жыл бұрын
I hear what you saying but would disagree, I have not added many mods which add complexity and in my experience, the additional capabilities and increased strength make it more reliable and provide an additional buffer. I think Afrika is also different terrain wise and is not as isolated? I don't think any modification ever cut a trip short in my Defender it always was a Landrover stock part like fuel pump, gearbox. Weight is an issue but if you spend four weeks in the desert without resupply you can’t get around it. Carrying this loads over very rough terrain with stock parts is waiting for stuff to fail.
@mash9885 жыл бұрын
Sure, you are correct and I would agree. The only real mod I have is the raised and stronger suspension...as well as stainless steel water tanks under each side of the 105...brilliant. Plus a two-drawer system. What did I leave out?? Oh yes, the snorkel! Haha. I also used to drive a Defender, and they have their place in certain applications for sure, great vehicles. Anyway, I believe in lighter-the-better in general, and in retrospect (with respect to my comment) I think its more perhaps what kit people take with and not necessarily the after-market modifications they make to the vehicle, which are mostly necessary depending on where you are headed or what terrain they will need to negotiate. I'm a guide out here and travel widely...in my opinion the amount of "mod-cons" people attach to their vehicles or PACK to take with in order to make their lives "easier and more comfortable" is absolutely astounding! I opine that they are mostly missing the point of separating themselves from their 'comfort zone' at home and heading out into some sort of wilderness...I notice people, a lot, spending an inordinate amount of time "fiddling and faffing" with all their kit they have brought with them and missing out on precisely what they should be engaging with, a connection to the world around them. They seem to exist in a cocoon of mod-cons which they've brought with them in the erroneous belief that they are necessary, even critical! In contrast, the 'awakening' and 'connection' they experience when actively encouraged to exist a little more "primitively," is a wonderful sight, and well-worth it! Granted, some folks would just like the (in my opinion, insulated) experience of their vehicle, it's movement, capability and their interaction with mates - it's enough for them. But I cannot recommend highly enough that the less kit you take with the more you will (probably) connect with wilderness, inside and out.
@AlloffroadAu5 жыл бұрын
yes, 100% agree and I do carry very little mod cons, no showers or hot water systems for instance and to be honest, I'm learning to go simpler with each trip and would agree that you connect more and also will become more resourceful by having to make do...

Could you fit a small wind deflector at the front of the rack to help stop wind resonance ? Even a small angled strip to redirect the wind between the roof and the bottom of the rack to alter it's direction so there is no resonance. Hi Stefan. I’ve followed this build from the beginning and really enjoyed seeing it come together. I’m interested to know what has changed in the almost year and a half since, and is there anything in hindsight you would change if you could start the build again? Cheers. Dan Strommer

Kudos to you for sharing details of your 105. Obviously well thought out changes. I shall adopt few of those changes to my overland vehicle. Why do you put so much emphasis on long suspension travel if your set up is for camping and not rock crawling? What were some of the limits you ran into with the regular bilstein shocks you had to justify a lot more expensive shocks set up? Would like to see a highlight vid on the engine swap. Thank you!
@AlloffroadAu4 жыл бұрын
I do a fair bit of remote Desert Travel and in trackless condition going up and down dunes long suspension travel equals traction. Our Desert dunes they are rarely even like in the Sahara but often have deep depressions and holes created by the wind so often not conquered by pure speed. Suspension set up made a huge difference, the speed I can travel, the comfort, handling, not bottoming out and the added traction in certain situations due to additional travel.

Thanks for sharing your mods with us Stephan. I will be going to Raslarr, to have a new Bull bar fitted, to the 105 ser, because of your review. I will be sure to mention where I saw it. I also like your battery set up and will consider carrying out the same mod in future. Have you experienced any problems with overheating using those compartments? I understand you have a fan but other than that how is the location so far? Currently my aux battery is under the bonnet and it seems to be fine but Id be interested to to know the pros/cons. Cheers!

@@AlloffroadAu yeh the cabin of the cruiser would be nice and roomy. I have the disco setup very nicely tho really efficient for camping but can take most of it out quickly and looks stock and 'clean' inside. Problem with the D2 is it is harder to fit bigger tyres than 245/75/16s without too many other modifications

Does having a high output alternator put more strain on components, does the engine needs to spin faster RPM at idle and while driving to supply the bigger voltage demand ? Going from a standard Toyota 80amp to 270amp, surely the standard Toyota parts were not designed to supply this amount of power without working much harder? Can anyone shed some light please. Thank you so much
@AlloffroadAu5 жыл бұрын
a good question to my knowledge it does not make a difference, it does not idle higher and I know someone who runs the 390amp version for a while now. But keen to hear if someone knows different
@rogerchambers13095 жыл бұрын
Very thorough, informative and communicated clearly. Even though I don't have a Toyota I got good value from watching this. When you spoke about your engine mods I was waiting to see if you mentioned "catch can" and you didn't. This is a hotly debated topic even when talking about new diesel engines. I have a new car that I want to last me the rest of my driving days and I'm 67 y/o now. Any thoughts on this?

I am going a slightly different route, converting a 100 to solid front axle and full float rear, pop top so I can stand inside or sleep up above, inside kitchen and slide out one, RedArc electronics, solar, Lithium, high output alternator, 2 fuel tanks 64 gallons, Dobinson 4” lift and much more.
@AlloffroadAu Жыл бұрын
Keep me posted seems more work than an engine swap on a 105 but keen to hear how you go.
@petepeters5630 Жыл бұрын
I will. I’m in the US so in order to have the 105’s great capabilities, axle swap was my only option. So much of my build comes from Australia: Dobinson, Ergon water hub, aqualon water heater, LRA fuel tanks, RedArc, ARB lockers, bumper, compressor, Engel Fridge and more. Custom Axles from Front Range Off-road took 16 months, but they are installed and she is nearly ready to be driven. She was capable with a 2.5” OME lift but should be so much more on my next big trip.

You were a bit vague with the safari armax ecu, i read between the lines. It would of been more informative with a follow up. I gather you would of seeked an explanation from safari? What was the result are you going to run it in the future.
@AlloffroadAu5 жыл бұрын
yes correct, unfortunately, will never be able to say with 100% certainty as Safari was not willing to put the unit back in my vehicle. They blamed it on the Nomade Heavy Duty Valve Body and High Stall Torque Converter even though according to everyone else including multiple gearbox specialists and tuners this can't be the issue and the vehicle is driving perfectly well since the safari is removed. I currently consider a gTurbo or DTS Module and once that is done will do a more detailed video.
