Has any 4WD been more anticipated in Australia than the Toyota Landcruiser 300 series? Judging by the long waiting periods for those flocking to Toyota to buy the Landcruiser 300, it’s unlikely. Chris Stead from Finder was lucky enough to spend some time behind the wheel of this beast for his Toyota Landcruiser review. Check out the link below for a detailed analysis. But in this video, you get a summary via his pros and cons of the Toyota Landcruiser 300 series. There are six models; GX, GXL, VX, SAHARA, GR SPORT and SAHARA ZX. It is the SAHARA ZX in this video, but the pros and cons apply to all models.

18 litres per 100 kms? Wowzers! I get 14 litres per 100 kms in peak hour bumper-to-bumper traffic driving in my 200 Series. 18 litres per 100 kms is when I am towing a 2 tonne caravan. Are you sure those numbers are right? Space in the 300 Series is incredibly tight. With the 3rd row up I can fit two 40 litre fridges behind the seats in the 200. Impossible to do that in the 300, and the cargo bay area is narrower between the wheel arches than a 150 Series Prado. The 2nd row seat leg room is significantly reduced compared to the 200 Series and the transmission hump makes it even more cramped compared to the relatively flat floor on the 200 Series. Not sure how Toyota managed to lose so much interior space with this new TNGA-F platform. Engine and gearbox are the positives.

Yes, that's what I was getting in the week I was using it every day. I've since read a few people say that the first couple of thousand km can see higher fuel consumption as the engine finds its feet, and the car was at that odometer. Potentially, this could account for discrepancy. As soon as you at some open road to just drive, it improved drastically for me. Even impressive. As for the internal size, I was really disappointed. Loved the drive experience, but they really missed the mark on the internal space given why Australians (in general) choose this car.

Not mentioned but something that has been said is High Oil Consumption ( engine has big tolerances, Heat), Lag between the Turbo's & Air Intake Dusting Up. These comments I have heard from other commentators. The oil consumption was from an official Toyota discussion document.

Hi Greg, many thanks for bringing this up. It's important to hear of some of these longer-term negatives (and positives) that have come up since launch!

That DPF filter must be a major restrictor causing additional fuel consumption

I only found it bad in short burst drivng. On highways and long commutes it did pretty well.

I think that's a myth. Fuel consumption on all 70 and 200series Landcruisers went down in 2016 when the DPF (and piezo injectors) were introduced. But it is interesting to hear the fuel consumption increases so much when in the city. I blame the auto transmission which locks up on the highway but not around town. I have a 2019 78series with DPF and it is the most economical Landcruiser I have owned.

Lol! Indeed! At least you can get them for $1 each at garage sales now, lol. I did that with my Kluger. Stocked up on Disney DVDs at 50c each; kids = sorted. They take up a lot of space though.

The nav system menu structure is a mess. Still about 5yrs behind in that department which is standard for the Landcruiser unfortunately. Agree on the GX needing more kit to justify the somewhat crazy entry level price. What this has done is inflated every wagon on the used market. Seen an 80 series for $50k recently. Agree he is dreamin’

It will be interesting to see what happens with second hand market in a few years. Could be a lot of people who have over-capitalised if fuel prices go up and hybrids take over.

There would be other new elements at play, however, to improve efficiency. So they can get more power while keeping fuel economy similar.

Strange. My 100 td manual with 402000km on her clock has never used more than 13.9l / 100km. Best is on the highway 8.9 l/ 100 km. Im not impressed with your figures at all. I do drive smoothly though.
@motivatedtravel
@motivatedtravel Жыл бұрын
So basically the same as me then. 8 on highway, 13 to 14 on most drives. Higher than that if you do nothing but small start-stop errands. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but the new engine is more powerful, so efficiency has been improved to retain status quo.

I tend not to flog $150K loan cars around busy city streets, lol. This was my experience when most trips were between 1km and 5km. Typical kind of at-home parent activities. Throw in one decent drive in that tank and it might come down a bit on average. But I was trying to make the point for those who buy these kinds of cars and then mostly do errands.

It is a 4wd. Did you look underneath to see why it's expensive?
@motivatedtravel
@motivatedtravel 11 ай бұрын
Sorry, I don't understand your comment. Yes there's plenty underneath, but I still think it is overly expensive in comparison to every other 4WD in the market.
@philg2468

@@motivatedtravel By "underneath" I was referring to it's 4wd attributes and they cost money. It has twin fuel tanks to give sufficient range when remote; it has a separate chassis that has never been known to bend or break; it has a V6 motor, not a 4cyl and before that it had a V8; it has the best traction control in the business; even has 14mm wheel studs instead of the 12mm you find on other 4wds. The axle ratings are higher than others which is why you can get significant GVM upgrades; It has a real towing capacity where GCM=GVM+ATM. It has a full 350kg allowed on the towball. No drum brakes to be seen. Of course there are things above that cost money such as aluminium panels. Gadgets like electric tailgates are not of importance to 4wders. All 4wds have gone up a lot in price lately, but the Landcruiser unfortunately has suffered from price gouging by dealers because demand outstrips supply.

@@philg2468 Yeah no doubting it's a beast. But as a long time fan, it's not the dream 4WD it needed to be for me at the asking price. Did enjoy driving it though.

@scottpop11, you're correct! Toyota has ceased J300 production. They're preparing for the next gen, the J500. The current generation, J300, was "unintentionally" brought into production, it was just a prototype actually. The design files were mix-matched with J80 and J100 files, and bz4x design elements, that's why there are sooo many silly things, including that stupid DVD player, and cramped interior, "accidentally" brought into production, somehow. J500, they promised it'll no longer have a stupid DVD player. J500 will have a slightly longer wheelbase at 2950 mm for better interior space. J300 is 2850 mm, oddly same as J250. This is the first time in history for a "heavy-duty" Land Cruiser to have the same wheelbase as the "light-duty" Prado. J500 will have the next-gen powertrain, more powerful, yet much more fuel efficient, 5L/100km. That's the latest official info that I got directly from Toyota, in my dream, last night.
