Nice video. One additional helpful tip would be to identify bolt sizes you're removing when giving DIY directions, so others can be sure to have correct size tools.

I've been doing this type of work so long that I can just look at a nut or bolt and know what size socket to use. Also good to know that Japanese cars manufacturers consistently use specific sizes different and sometime convoluted from their American and German counterparts. For example, in all Japanese cars: 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, 17 mm, 19 mm, 21 mm. Americans: 10 mm, 13 mm, 3/8", 15 mm, 18 mm. Germans 10 mm, 13 mm, 14 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm, 17 mm, 18 mm. Again, the Japanese are to most consistent.

oh, just one more additional thought> i did put all new shims for all wheels. my friend did put a bit of grease just in front of the bolt head/slider. he said when he screwed bolt in the grease would penetrate over the whole shaft/pin.

I second the recommendation of using Akebono. That car must be garage kept, as the caliper/brackets look super clean. Even the abutment clips looked pretty clean compared to what I usually see. When compressing the caliper piston, it's important to remove the cap from the brake fluid master cylinder. I recommend a product called Sil-Glyde for slider pins. It does not dry out and will not swell rubber parts. Nice job.
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for you comments Tim. The only thing I don't like about Akebono pad kits is they won't give you any hardware ... i.e. abutment clips like a lot of other brake pad suppliers. I'll check into Sil-Glyde. To save money for some customers, I've had good success with Raybestos EHT (Enhanced Hybrid Technology) brake pads. They're cheaper than Akebono's and seem to work well.

There's a cable adjustment bolt. Just trace both line cables from the rear brakes to one connection point. Then you'll see the adjuster.

Thanks a lot for answering my question. as a rookie i am just a bit confused. please straighten me out. does the wear indicator pin suppose to be directed towards the rotor so when when pad gets low a squeal is heard by the squealer touching the rotor?? Look at the time line about 5 mins when you are transferring squeal pin to the new pad. the pin/squealer is facing away from the rotor, after you put it on new pad. so how could it be be used as a squealer to make noise when pad gets low? At the time line at 5:36 the pin/squealer is pointing away from the rotor? My friend put on the pads couple of days ago. I didn't have any squealing prior. There is really no constant squeal when driving in straight line, but sometimes there is. When turning to the left i hear the right side making a squeal. rotors are good, no scaring. The brakes work good. So please confirm if the pin/squealer is suppose to be positioned away from the rotor at you have yours in the video. Your thoughts?

question: is there enough space for the tangs projected part which was taken off the old pad was put on wrong, therefore the tangs larger projected part was directed inward toward the pad and not directed toward the oil pan as you did. ( i don't if there is even enough space for the tangs projected to occur. ) if it was put in the wrong direction as described what would be the effects??
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the brake wear squeal pin?
@scooter12368
@scooter12368 3 жыл бұрын
this is great that you answered me so quickly. thank you for trying to help me. serious i appreciate it. Yes to your question. at 5 minutes and 5:36 on time line you are attaching the clip/squeal pin the large protruding pin/squealer is facing away from rotor. IS that way it should go?? the protruding large portion of the pin you installed is facing outward AWAY from the rotor. that is why i didn't think it was a squealer. when the guy was putting pads on i didn't get a good look at which way the pin was facing. IS IT possible for the protruding part of the pin to go in wrong direction? DOESN'T seem like any damage would occur if the protruding part of pin is going away from the pad. its just the squeal wouldn't alarm driver that brakes need to be replaced. RIGHT or wrong? I bought the platinum pads and got lots of noises but less then first day now its day 4 driving and got less noise. the guy said their not broke in yet. he also only put grease just beyond the bolt of slider and once he screwed bolt in it would slide on rest of bolt he said. ??? i also bought new shims with brakes. i put brakes on myself other cars and didn't get the noises
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 жыл бұрын
@@scooter12368 The installation is correct. The squeal pin/pad wear indicator will touch the brake rotor when the pad wears to within 1 to 2 mm. The pin is long to allow vibration. When it does, you'll notice a high pitch squealing noise alerting you that the pads are worn out. It's a nice to have feature but I check my brake pad wear thickness at every tire rotation ... so I really don't need it. Also, as a general rule, replace the pads as they approach 3 mm in wear thickness.

My upper sliding bolt or pin stuck on caliper bracket and I can't fit the outside brake pad when dropping down the caliper. I end up putting the old pad in order to drop the caliper for enough room... any tips or techniques how to disconnect or remove the upper sliding bolt/pin... I just wanna do it right even though my job did work...thanks

Take the caliper bracket off and pull / screw the pin(s) out. Clean out the pin hole with brake clean solvent and a wire brush. Air dry with compressed air. Clean grease residue on pin, re-grease the pin with brake grease and then see how far in the pin will now go into the bracket hole.
