Toyota / Lexus Wipers, Motor And Cowling Removal/Re-Installation

This short video will show you the basics on the removal and re-installation of a wiper motor cowling assembly typically found most FWD cars. The video was made from a 2005 Toyota Camry V6. If you're considering doing any work anywhere near the firewall of your Toyota or Lexus (such as intake plenum removal, spark plug replacement, heater hose detachment/replacement, detachment of the A/C high and lower pressure line to the evaporator core, O2 sensor plug, etc.), it would be extremely difficult to service these items unless you remove the cowling that houses the windshield wiper motor. It take less than 10 minutes to remove and you will avoid the frustration and aggravation of trying to service your car with the cowling on.

I have a 13 Avalon and could not find a video that showed how to remove it. Even though my cowling is slightly different I obtain more info from your video than any other video I've seen so far. All of the V-6 powered mini-vans I've ever seen have this same feature. Many people try to work on the rear of the engine without removing the cowling because they think it "saves work". Trust me, removing the cowling is well worth the time and effort because everything back there becomes a lot easier to get at. And trying to stick your hands back there with the cowling still on can increase you chances of doing something really bad like stripping out a spark plug hole.

OMG. I wish I realized I could do this before I took the intake plenum off my 99 ES300. It would have made the plenum bracket much easier to disconnect. It was do-able, but next time I'll definitely remove these items. I only realized this since my friend wants me to do spark plugs on his 06 Sienna, and you really have no choice but to remove the wiper cowling assemblies for the van setup as I've now learned lol.

The 99 doesn't have this setup. Think it started with the ES330.

I don’t know about that car but in my Lexus ES you can just stick your hand behind the plenum to feel that fastener.

This would be a good opportunity to replace the rear spark plugs with the cowling removed, easy access, quick operation.

If you need to get to engine components under the cowling. To just replace the wiper motor, you can leave the cowling in place.

Yes but first detach the strut from the steering knuckle.

@@hardlymovingpro why would you remove the strut from the knuckle? You're taking the mounting nuts off the mounting studs on the top. No need to remove the bottom part of the strut too.

Then how do you replace the old strut?

@@hardlymovingpro this is in the context of removing the nuts, in order to remove the wiper cowel. They didn't say anything about removing the strut, just the top nuts. Their question reads like they may have been wondering if the strut would come apart (as it would if you removed the large center nut). People get taught to be afraid of the spring, but not taught how the strut assembly works, so they're left with questions like this.

Hey! My daughters 2014 corolla is having wiper motor trouble. Control switch on steering wheel (relay) seems to be working because i switched it out with another couple switchs, and wipers only operate in fast mode. Seems very easy to replace the whole wiper motor assembly after watching your video. I hope that is my trouble! Thanks

Could be the wiper control rods is disconnected/broken or the wiper arm is loose against the rotating wiper shaft (torque down the nut).
