In addition to a misaligned arm, another common cause of this is the resting position of the arm. This is especially common in areas that have long dry periods where the wipers are not used. After a use, whether it is to clean the windshield or because of precipitation, the wiper returns to a park position at the bottom of the windshield. The rubber squeegee is slightly flexed in the direction you showed in your video. As it sits there for a long period of time, and is exposed to high temperatures, the rubber fatigues and stiffens in that position. Ideally there would be a system that slightly lifts the wiper from the glass when it is in a park position. I used to have this problem (chattering wipers) with my RV. To stop it, I would take a small rubber ball and stick it under the arm to lift it off of the glass while it is being stored for extended periods. I got a bag of 5 at the dollar store and just kept them in the console bin. Once or twice I had forgotten to remove them before turning on the wipers. except for 1 time, they dropped won into the little space below and stayed there until I got to my destination. I never had the chattering issue again once I started doing this. I know it isn't practical for a daily driver, but just something to think about.

Older (luxury) cars from the 70s and early 80s, maybe, had wipers that parked off the glass. There were little ramps at the base of the windshield that the wiper arm rode over when you turned them off, and turning off the wipers made the wiper arm move an extra 1 or 2 inches until they were completely horizontal and stop. The wiper arms parked the blades off the glass completely so the rubber could return to neutral. Conversely, turning on the wipers made them rise 1 or 2 inches from rest and then sweep the glass from that position back and forth. Marvelous feature and I think it was often paired with hiding the wipers, meaning the rear of the hood extended over the crevice where the wipers were mounted, resulting in a clean look. I must admit wipers are one of the ugliest things visible on a car, with a few exceptions.

The root cause is that the wiper rests on the "downsweep" position. After a while at rest (and no rain), the rubber will become fixed into that state. The solution, although you need to do it repeatedly, is to lift the wiper and allow the rubber to "flip back", then place it back down whenever you get home at the end of the day. This is a 2 second job. Better yet, pull the wiper down a cm or so, and then allow the wiper to "spring" back up into the "upsweep" position. This has saved me from replacing my wipers every year (which is a stupid waste of $40/yr for a COMPLETE wiper and blade set for my car) and instead, every 3-4 years instead.

Wouldn't this then make a chattering sound when the wiper downsweeps? i.e. on long stretches of hot weather with no rain, the wiper would get fixed in the upsweep position, and make a chattering sound downsweep.

@@MasterKoala777 Yes that could be true too. But despite my suggestion, I forget enough times that it evens out. Also, once in a while I have to use the wipers and fluid to get rid of grime in the summer. So overall, this problem of chattering blades is minimal.

Your point was a good one. But in terms of detail accuracy I feel like being the Pedantic Police and advising you politely that it's not Echo it's Reverberation - an Echo repeats the sound as it bounces back over a critical distance but within a room it's Reverberation is not quite an echo and causes a long decay after the sound has finished as it dies away in the room. I didn't notice this in the video as I had the sound turned off and sub titles on!!!

Congratulations on your video. I'm a 66-year-old retired mechanic and have been doing this procedure for around 40 years. What I would say though is that when you do this, put new blades on at that time and also to be very careful with the Crecent wrenches or tools as it's very easy to break the windshield. Also, I remove the blade and verify that flat portion of the arm where it touches the windshield is squared up and perfect. looking at the blade where it contacts isn't very good for squaring it up. But again, be careful when the arm is raised with no blade as if it is allowed to fall under spring pressure and hit the windshield, most likely it will break the windshield.

70 year old mechanic here... if you can't get a good eyeball on it just remove the blade and wedge a paint stirring stick in the hook. Might take a wrap or two of masking tape to make it fit tight. Now you have a straight edge to eye for distance on the glass. You can also use a shop towel to cushion any "fumble fingers" so the arm doesn't chip the glass if you slip. I can do it either way, but this is how I explain it to a novice.

Excellent video! Will definitely add this info to the knowledge base. I suggest doing the bending with a new, decent quality frame and blade installed. As it ages, rubber's flexibility can change and exceed its design parameters, causing chatter. An old frame with worn joints can also be a factor. No need to bend if old rubber or worn frame is the real culprit. 😀

I think the wiper blade itself can be part of the problem. On my car, a new wiper blade doesn't do that, but after baking in the sun for a few months in a flexed position, it tends to be less flexible, and will start making that annoying chatter. I'm a bit nervous about bending the arm on my fairly new car, but I think your solution could help extend the life of the wiper blade.

Cool fix! The main cause of blade skipping, chattering is that wiper blades stop in a loaded position, having wiped the glass then stopped. In the loaded position heat and time change the angle of the blade especially in summer heat.. One of my cars has a lifted stopped position, reducing the load on the blade, preventing the chatter, extending the blade life. Solution, change the blades. Twisting the arm is a temporary fix, chatter will return after some time passes, and then new blades will not be properly aligned.

Good suggestion. But when you are in a warm climate, it's the rubber that bends for being for months in the parked position. I even turned the rubber around once to solve it (a bit complicated), but on my old Ford Transit, that's what I did to make the rubber edge closer to perpendicular.

I've never experienced a bent wiper arm. The real problem here is that the wiper always comes to a stop after a downward stroke, resting with the rubber bent upwards which over time gets bent upwards. The simple solution is to give it a little push downward from time to time, so that the rubber flips back to downward position. In that way the rubber stays perpendicular to the screen, able to flex equally both ways. Another solution could be a wedge shaped thing lifting the wiper off of the screen in stop position, but that might cause another sound problem.

This is more believable since brand new wiper blades dont chatter. New blades havent spent the time facing the wrong way developing that memory. Would be nice to be able to just reverse them occasionally.

Good fix! While you are at it clean the wiper blade. Dirt, bug guts... dry on the blade and cause streaking. Use a cloth and rubbing alcohol to clean the rubber wiper. Put the alcohol on the cloth and wipe the rubber blade. You will be amazed at the dirt that comes off. Repeat until it is clean. Your blades will last much longer!

Great video. After the vehicle sits long enough, the rubber of the wipers takes a 'set' in the direction you show. That's why some manufacturers (VW group for sure, maybe others) make the wiper arm move up slightly every second park. That way, the rubber doesn't take a 'set', thus reducing this symptom.

This video cover the most important, BUT... Now comes the but! LOL 🙂 Tip: Before doing that make sure the bad "twist" is in fact in the arm itself. On most older cars you'll find the real culprit slightly further down on warn out bushings, etc. Easy to check and usually it's cheap and easy to fix. ;-)

My last wipers (three years old) were the run of the mill wipers but I use 303 aerospace protectant on everything and they still work like new. I buy it by the gallon and use it on my tires, inside and out and let it soak over night and then mount them the next day and get at least 80K from them. Fan, alternator diesel pump, all belts the same thing and they never go bad. 303 Marine Aerospace Protectant

I’m driving a 1996 Oldsmobile Delta 88. There’s little stands under the hood and when I get out of the car I lift and hang the wipers on them. This lets the blade relax and hang straight. The hood extension also provides shade to the wipers and they last a long time since they aren’t in the sun. The current set of wipers are about 4 years old now.
