This is a pretty special video as it condenses the entire 5 year car restoration project of my Toyota MR2 into 10 minutes. It starts all the way back from when I bought my AW11 MR2 more than 5 years ago, through all the rebuilds, restoration, the highs and the lows up until today when I am finally enjoying my MR2 the way I have always imagined.
All the big moments are in this car build project time lapse video, from the very first engine rebuild, to my transmission rebuild, the suspension rebuild, the brakes rebuild, the second engine rebuild with the bike carb conversion and many other key moments that defined my MR2, and me as well, and it all happens in just a bit over 10 minutes. It's a car transformation but a personal transformation going on behind the scenes as well.
Why did rod knock happen the first time around? Well I sandblasted my engine block to make it look like new again and to apply an engine enamel paint onto it. I religiously washed my block afterwards, but washing an engine block after blasting is actually impossible as the blast media gets embedded in the metal and it lets go only when the engine reaches operating temperature for the first time. This is what killed my engine the first time around. Lesson learned: Do NOT sandblast your engine block.

Not gonna lie man, this has got to be one of the biggest sources of inspiration for me and my own Mr2. I've got a lot of road ahead of me to get it to where i want but with enough patience I think I can get it done. Its rusty in some spots, needs plenty of stuff rebuilt, previous owner screwed with the cables for lots of commodities and it busts through A/C belts more than one changes shirts but i still love that damn dark red road blaster. Hello Megan Francis, If you are serious, check out armstrong racing on youtube for transmission detail. I used these videos to completely rebuild my C-60 gearbox and add LSD with shimming. I had never completely rebuilt a transmission previously. I now have over 600 miles of testing and all is good! Mr. P

I hope mine would be fulfilling too, I am paying off for a toyota ae92 (Australian) with a 20V silvertop that had replaced its original 16V bigport, the body work is really nice, the paint is well kept, minimal to no rust, but I’m still overwhelmed with the idea of rebuilding the engine, suspension, gearbox, such and such~

I got to drive mine for a few years. It was awesome. It died on me a few weeks ago. Unfortunate thing. Not sure of what the damage is until the engine gets torn down. But unfortunately keeping it may not be in the cards for me. I love the little thing, i've driven fast cars, and i've driven "good" cars. None of them compare to the MK1 MR2. It was slow, but boy it puts a smile on your face everytime you talk about it. Might swap in a newer engine for better fuel economy, but it is what it is.

Hello driving 4 answers, Clearly a labor of love and what you have done for your car shows that care and attention to detail. I did many things the same on my MR2/S, but not as much (no body, front end, or suspension upgrades). LOVE your passion and on this project. Q: What happened on 1st engine rebuild that caused bearing issue? Oil pump? Interested because I took a Detroit Nasty 2zz with over 100k miles and completely rebuilt, bolt-to-bolt. Re-used pistons (and pins and piston bearings....a no-no in service manual, but cost is ~$45-70 for piston pin bearings x4), cams, and crank. Measured and cleaned bore (non serviceable), but within tolerance, although slightly egged. Also bolt-to-bolt on C-60 trans and added used LSD for fun! Again, Appreciate your passion. Mr. P

All the service manuals are gonna tell you to not reuse pistons, but I have seen dozens of builds with good reused pistons that were within specs do hundreds of thousands of miles. I have also heard of many failing, but if they are nicely within specs you should be ok. I learned that engine building is knowledge but it's a bit of an art too, worrying too much doesn't help. I used to worry a lot, but know I just enjoy every moment. If it fails, it fails, I'll just rebuild it again :)

@@d4a OUCH! As a youth I learned how bad sand can be when blasting my buddies RX-7 with an industrial, I'm talking tow behind, air source and sand. It took off all the rust and hidden Bondo, but also warped all the panels! Agresiveness of media not only concern as heat also builds quickly on the target surface. Glass bead and soda so much nicer! Another common sandblasting mistake on BMW’s is the inside of the valve cover pcv chamber. It’s riveted on', but you must drill out the rivets', disassemble, blast, wash, rerivet.

I was worried when you started sand blasting the engine in the video.. and sure enough its what killed it. we can all learn from your mistakes :P did you end up purchasing a new head and block? Id be very hesitant to re use them since who know how much sand is left in the oil galeries. :)

That was soda blasting of the cylinder head in the video. What you see in the video did not kill the engine. I would never blast combustion chambers with sand, that would be very stupid. I blasted my block. I sealed off absolutely everything except the outer surface of the block, but it still got in somehow. I reused the block, it's been really good so far.

In a few weeks, I'm going to be in the same situation you started at in the video. My mind says I should get something easier and more practical, but my heart tells me that the MR2 is the most beautiful 80s car I'll be able to afford, and that it'll be worth the work. What resources do you recommend I get to learn how to work on cars? EDIT: Quick question: Would it be better for me to get a local cheap MR2 under 2k, then work to fix it? (They only mentioned a gas leak, but for a car under 2k there's gotta be more), or something 10k across the US where I'd have to get it shipped here, but it's in great condition? I haven't worked on cars before, but I've got a LOT of free time and motivation.
