TOYOTA PRADO STOPPED!

Petrol or Diesel can break down. This is about the only thing that can stop A Prado engine!
Very very rare Problem to have, we would like to gather information & experiences with this.
All due to tiny debris maybe.....
Rear transfer filter-can also block causes same problem. Dont freak out! Very rare!

Sounds like the exact reason our 08 Grande came home on a tow truck last night, second time in 2 months, both times when on half tank, thanks for pointing me in the right direction towards possible fix

You're opening statement was spot on. I was broken down on the side of the road, bone dry in main even though aux is full :( Thanks for the video, keen to get my car off the ground to pull the tanks out

Great thread and information. I had same trouble with 2005 V6 petrol 120 Prado a couple of years ago. Was coming back from long trip on a very hot day (about 45 deg C) towing a boat when car just stopped when still half a tank of fuel in Aux. Managed to get towed off the road to a safe location and put about 10 litres of fuel in - car still wouldn't start. Organised a tow and just before the tow truck arrived gave the car another try and it started. Unloaded when home and took car to Toyota service centre who had never heard of such a problem and couldn't find any issue. I did ask them about dropping the tank to check it and the transfer pump but they assured it was working ok and wasn't necessary. Since then I have rarely let the car run on to the second tank and haven't had any problems. I did notice on the trip prior to the break down that that the tank was pressurised a lot more than normal when I took the fuel cap off which I put down to the hot weather. On reflection it was probably a sign of the problem to come. Looks like a mongrel job to get the tank out - I think I'll just operate it like I have been since the incident but will get the hose and filter checked at next service. Haven't had the pressure in the tank since so it might have cleared itself.

I have a 150 with the exact problem described above. It has the additional problem of being really hard to fuel up. It splashed back forms air locks horribly. It can take 20mins to put 50L in! It has been like it since we purchased it 8 months ago. The dealer (not Toyota) has apparently replaced the pump lines & filter to no avail. They always requested we take it to them full for some reason?? The dealer has now given up as they cannot work it out. As soon as I get a spare weekend I plan I’m dropping the tanks and cleaning them out.... all I can think of is that there is some rubbish blocking the Venturi.... will this cause the fuelling up problems as well? Or do I have more than one problem to solve?

Mine is doing the same thing fuel warning light comes on at half tank. Fills up fine untill about half way on the guage. Then the second half of fueling is gurgling and foaming up keeps clicking off the nozzle. Takes me forever to fill the tanks. But once over half the fuel warning light goes out and comes back on when i run it back down to half a tank. I have replaced both fuel filters problem still remains. 2016 model i just brought off non toyota dealer problem started just after the 3 month stat warranty run out.

I have this problem right now my car is a Prado 120 2003 3ltr 1kzte engine I have removed the jet pump and it’s not blocked and tested my car does not have the electric pump in tank or filters as per your video it uses the return line from the injector pump to start the jet pump Venturi so many times I have been stuck with fuel in the rear tank when I fill up at a servo I can only get 20 ltrs in the tank due to air lock and spit out of filler. If I blow a small amount of compressed air down the vent line it will start the fuel transfer and the car will be fin for awhile I have replaced the vent check valve in rear tank

I need help! My 2011 prado has a full tank of deisel, it use to run out when gauge says 1/2. Now it runs out when gauge says 3/4. Could the pick up be broken?

My 150 1kd 2012, fuel light flashes while fuel gauge is midway. Car still runs but we refill to stop fuel light flashing...what could be the reason for flashing fuel light while tanks are half-full?

I’m in NZ and have an ex Aussie 120. It cut out with 1/2 a tank as they do. Pulled the front tank out and found the transfer pump had been replaced by an aftermarket one but not plugged in inside the tank! Also the transfer filter was blocked. Refitted and working fine for about 6 months but now doing the same again! Looks like I’m pulling the tank again and checking the Venturi etc. Thanks for the info, would’ve be great to see before I fixed it the first time. Did you work out where the blockage can me from? Also replaced the filler pipe as it had cracked. I was unable to get parts from Toyota NZ but got them through Megazip.net for a reasonable price.

Gday Anthony, Love the videos mate. This problem had occurred to my 08 120 prado 2 years ago with transfer pump replaced. As of yesterday I noticed the pump screaming non stop underneath the car at the main fuel tank where the assembly sits. Would it be reasonable to presume the pump is about to fail (typical bearing failure noise on other pumps) or could be again issue with venturi blocking up.

Sometimes the filter between the two tanks is the problem. On my 150 the Aux tank drains first and then the main tank. However just occasionally some people have had the main tank run out and the vehicle stopping, but the dash fuel gauge still shows 1/3rd or so full. The filter between the tanks has blocked the flow from the Aux tank. I have my Scangauge reading both tank levels just in case. Hope that helps.

I finally solved my fuel transfer issue on my Prado 120 kzj120 1 kzte engine the check valve on the return line on the rear of the injector pump was jammed shut replace with a new one from Toyota $60 solved
