Thank you much for your video. I am the original owner of 2008 Prius with 185K miles on it. My display started to occasionally not turn on about two years ago, and I can use the quick method(s) to make it work for more than a few months a time. However the problem get more frequent recently so I decided to replace the C3 capacitor as described by few smart users on the internet. I followed the video procedure(s) to remove the parts to access the Display and Combo meter without much difficulties. I removed the surface mounted 100uF 16v capacitor C3 by using a iron to melt the leads easily and replaced it with a surface mounted 220uF 16v capacitor (a tricky task). I measured the original C3 capacitance to be 216uF on board before it was removed. The C3 capacitance is 247uF on board after the new 220uF was installed. I also measured all other capacitors on the Display board and they are all good! After putting back everything together back on car, it works nicely except the fuel level indicator (had 80% of fuel before the repair but it shows 60% after the work). I will go through few pumping cycles to see what happens or I will follow the procedure to re-calibrate the fuel meter display. Great job on the video, and I really appreciate it!

Thanks very much for this video! I saw some of these tips in other videos, but no one else put it all together the way you did. The braided copper solder cleaning was brilliant, and every step you demonstrated worked perfectly for me. This was the smallest, most delicate soldering job I have ever done, and it worked flawlessly. My stepdaughter's car is now FIXED, and she is very happy (me too!). Great job on the video, and thank you again!

I used to repair clusters some years ago and one tip if are interested, If you are replacing one capacitor with a larger one due to what it seems the incorrect one chosen in the design (220uf instead of 100uf) as you are already spending time on removing all the board, is better to get an entire set of caps and replace all SMD and regular cylinder ones, when I used to repair I took my time to test all caps for my customers and a lot of them were still "good" when tested but leaking underneath and some other were off spec, so for the work done, replacing all is the greatest choice and try to spend some time with magnifying glass to make sure there all joints are healthy not cracked due to heat.

For the gen 2 Prius specifically? Do you think any benefit to put like a spray coating of Krylon clear coat or like quick chip silicone to better seal as well why at it?
@pauln1195 жыл бұрын
You got lucky. By twisting the capacitor off like that, you could have easily broken off the copper solder pads. You should de-solder, not pull off by forced, otherwise, the rest of the video is very good. Thanks!
@ohger12 жыл бұрын
Depends on the board. Some are so fragile that even light heat lifts these additive traces. Others are bonded better. In any case, if twisting off the cap, it's best to push *down* while rotating. But yeah, some absolutely can't be twisted off even if done carefully.
@alexharker722311 ай бұрын
100% percent correct. Desolder the capacitor. He got very lucky he didn't hose the whole board by ripping off solder pads. It looks like there's enough room you could probably solder the legs of a through-hole style replacement capacitor to those pads as well. That would be a lot easier that futzing with a surface mount replacement.

Thank you! Superb technique on your soldering prep and repair. One thing that really helps is a needle tip solder tip. It allows you to get the heat on a small soldering point. On another video, the guy doing the demonstration showed how to leave a little more wire on the replacement capacitor and then bend them like little legs with feet. It gives you a bit more room to maneuver the soldering tip to the pads.

I removed the 100 and replaced with a 220 uf 16 v . Had a difficult time with the soldering but kept trying and got it. Put it all back together. Broke 2 of the A/C vents but the dashboard is working! Hurray the capacitors were 5.00 for 5. It took me a full day but I am happy. Thanks for the video. I did this on faith that the 100 capacitor was the reason for dark display and so it was. Without youtube I would have never had a chance.

@@CronusVelox why not ? Voltage rating mean max it can handle right ? Can you validate your argument mate
@CronusVelox4 ай бұрын
@earthlingi72 Generally yes. But I would still try to get a component similar to the one you're replacing. Some electronics require a minimum esr for circuitry. Getting a bigger voltage lowers esr. I saw another video where someone said when toyota replaces these capacitors they replace it with a 220uf 16v capacitor. Honestly tbh now that I'm thinking about it I think you're right it shouldn't break your dash if you do use a higher voltage. On that topic, were you able to fix your dash? I'm going to try fixing mine this weekend
@earthlingi724 ай бұрын
@@CronusVelox mine did not work for few days after fix and then suddenly out of the blues it started working. I have no clue why, it could have been the ribbon cable was not making contact or any other thing. It was working well until this month (after one year) but within the last 3 weeks twice the display went blank for few seconds while driving. I could not find tantalum caps so used regular caps and may be they dont last long due to dashboard getting burning hot up in sun. my suggestion is, after fix, connect the display and check if its working before put the dashboard back again as to make sure. Good luck !

With Prius powered off, driver side door open, step on brake and simultaneously turn headlights on and off rapidly. Red open door light will turn on and dash will work. Guessing this may discharge the capacitor as a sort of reset??

FYI - If there is anyone left like me (Dec 2024).... By far the easiest way to get it working temporarily. The driver door open light shows in the dash when working correctly. When the dash goes out that driver door open light also is out. Power the car off (might have to hold the power off button in for a bit). Open the driver door. The door open light will not be showing. Leave the car powered off and start using as much electrical as possible (turn headlights off/on, turn emergency flashers on, turn interior lights on, push brake pedal) (that's all I have ever had to do). Eventually the door open light will come on and it is working again. It is a capacitor problem and I think this discharges the capacitor(s) and resets the problem (temporarily). I learned this from someone on YT but I don't know who so I can't give credit but I thank him every time it occurs. I bought new capacitors but would rather not have to go through this repair. I'll see how it goes. My 2007 Prius is awesome!

@bathsaltZ3 жыл бұрын

@ohger12 жыл бұрын
If you remove the original cap and test it, you'll find the value and ESR aren't too far off. This means the cap (bypass in this application) is marginally spec'd for value. A new cap of the same value might die even sooner. A 220uf gives more "headroom" as it ages.
