Toyota RAV4 2002 4D4 diesel changing starter motor...Hot starting problems

Having had a hot starting problem with our 2002 MK2 RAV4 with 122 thousand miles on the clock.... for sometime, apparently it's a common problem...5 to 10 mins drive stop the motor will restart ok....20 to 30 mins stop for fuel or the shop no chance cranks over and over.... I think engine heat effects the starter motor it's not cranking fast enough to pressurise the fuel in the common rail and get the fuel injection working.
I was making it start by spraying GT86 lube spray into the air filter box...fires up right away then...
I have changed the SCV's (suction control valves) on the high pressure pump as this is another known problem for hot starts... there is a good video on KZbin from a cool guy in Norway Sondre Drevdal Borge.... showing how to change them.
The good news is the Car now starts 100% hot or cold now, starter cost £125 delivered and took an hour or so to fit...I must thank my long suffering friend and co-conspirator Dave for his help...Cheers All

Hi, thanks for a great video, a life saver in fixing my hot start problem. The 2 bolts holding the starter motor on are little monkeys though (not the exact words I used). With the tools I had I found it easier to remove the gear change pivot plate (2 x 14mm head bolts) which gave just the right amount of access to get straight onto the bolt heads.

Hello Nigel....I'm glad it all worked out for you....I'm lucky in having a pretty good range of tools left over from previous missions in life, but still I've had to rush off a few times and buy a particular say long reach socket, still have you seen the labour rates in even modest garages lately? Hot start problems are associated with leaking injectors seats. On Mk 2 they all were faulty from factory, but Toyota never did recall. Have it repaired on my own and since it starts like brand new engine every time.

Yeah I'd heard that one....that sounds like it could be a bit expensive?

@@jetblack11td Probably. I have worked on it on my own. Key is to prepare and buy all orings and new type seals from Toyota, or their dealer. It's good habit to take 'PCV' hose off from time to time and see if there is any smoke or blowby, that indicates leaking seals, I had tonnes of it, 3 of 4 injectors were eating oil and leaking. Sadly Toyota still recommend replacing them every 40,000 miles which I found little funny. Diesel injector seals should last easily up to 100,000 miles, but hey! 😉

Hello, my RAV4 XA20 2.0 D4D is having the same problem. When it's hot, it's hard to start or won't start, but if I connect it to a battery jumper, it starts (the battery is new). Could replacing the starter motor with a 2.2 KW one solve the issue? Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

Hola.... Joao I can't guarantee it.......but I would be very surprised if it didn't sort your problem....a Good new or overhauled starter should be fine 2.2kw for choice, looking at Autodoc online parts they are around £120 not sure in Euros. Important you need to count the number of teeth on the starter you have = Order the right one! All the best....Trevor

Hi, thanks for the vid, describes exactly the fault on my 55 plate RAV4. Where did you get the starter, which make & how much? Euro car parts list one for my car but it's only 1.4kw. (£212) Same problem on GSF site, 1.4kw. PS, I always add slick 50 oil treatments to my old cars, was able to drive an old chevy celibrity 30 miles home in Florida once after the coolant hose split and lost all the coolant. Just replaced the hose then and engine was fine, didn't even change the oil till due!

Hello Are you based in the US? bit surprised you have Euro and GSF all I seem to see in the states is NAPA....I got the starter from Mister Auto which is I think actually based in France I can't remember exactly which one but it was more like (couple of years ago!) £150... looking at their web site today and plugging my Ravs details..... there's a Hella unit brand new at £186 2.2KW I'm sure any good new or re-manufactured unit would be fine...even a 1.4 Kw . I drove across the Mojave desert a couple of weeks ago in a rental TDI Passat I stopped to look at the scenery and leave some moisture...first time I stopped the engine then I thought I haven't seen another car for best part an hour next time I kept it running! getting dark too Back to RAV's don't put Slick 50 in the Gear box My mate got one for next to nothing not changing gear right, bloke said had put Slick 50 in we changed in for new gear oil back to perfect after...that RAV had the same starter problem...Cheers...Trevor

Hi, just wondered if you've had any hot start issues since? Mines has the hot start problem. Changed the starter (unfortunately I didn't see you video until later so it has the 1.4kw one) would it be worth changing it again? It has got worse since the new start was fitted

Hello Demi..... A new starter should work OK I wouldn't change it for a higher rated motor, I was making the point if you are buying a new motor get the more powerful unit.... at the end of the our original one did well over 100,000 Miles before problems. unfortunately there are a few other possible causes.... the suction control valves are a known issue read the full notes at the top I changed mine you can get Blue print pattern units that are a lot cheaper than the original Nippon Denso units from a Toyota dealer. but wasn't my problem, Crank position sensors are another thing that can play up when hot and not cause any engine management codes... as can fuel injectors..... Yeah mine does too @ 135K miles it's a bit to be expected, I fitted a re- manufactured turbo a couple of years back so not that... Scotty Kilmer has a video about crank case breathers which are basically a non return valve meant to vent crankcase pressure and vapors in the inlet manifold and burn it... might be worth checking out..if it's fault it sucks oil in.... you can also get oil for high mileage engines as well as oil treatments but I'm not too keen on them..wear and tear gets to us all ;) cheers ...Trevor

Hello Adam...How ours was it would start from cold every time drive it for 10-15 minutes stop in the filling station and no crank it and crank it eventually would start it was slowly Getting worse.... I tried the suction control valves on the fuel injection which is another known problem ..... came cheap from eBay no change.... The starter fixed it right away I think the starter gets hot and spins a bit slower, this started happening at about 110 k miles now on 130k miles and is spot on all the time.... So I think a new starter is a fair chance... All the best Trevor

Leaking injectors seals, it's not even common failure. It happens to all 2.0 D4D 1CD-FTV. You have to replace seals with new type copper zinc plated seals and keep up service of injectors every 40,000 miles like Toyota says. Quite often, but it is easy DIY.

@@jetblack11td Yes it is seal between injector and head. Copper round seal, right before combustion chamber. Nothing in Denso injectors. Those injectors are top quality, very robust.

Hello Jake.....I'm just to the west of Bristol in Tier 3 in a town that begins with a Y...... If you have the starter I could do it for you after Christmas in return for some BBT's (Brown Beer tokens) as issued by HM treasury....Normal Social distance etc applies...Cheers....Trevor

Hi No it wasn't... the times I have had mine do it it's been the mass air flow sensor dirty I cleaned it with brake cleaner and it cleared OK there are several vids on KZbin showing how to do this...disconnecting the battery for 15 mins will clear faults in the ECU too...Cheers...Trev

What fixed mine was removing the earth cable where the negative connects to the body sanding them all and puting a shiny new bolt on starts every time now when hot The garage said it was injector seals but it wasnt Try it

I 100% agree with you Bumfluff ( I never thought I'd write those words!) always check and/or clean all the cables in the starter motor circuit not forgetting the battery terminals getting the battery checked with a proper discharge tester is a good idea too....as is the charging by the alternator plenty of auto electrical places will check for free hoping to sell you a battery/starter/alternator winter time is when it all happens...All the best....Trev

He thinks bad, hot engine starts have nothing to do with bad injectors. Why would they change the engine starter and put a stronger one than the factory-assigned menu is not logical.

Stefan....Trust me a new starter fixed my problem the old one slow and weak affected by engine heat and wear...replacement starters are higher rated than original units....starts every time now.... Cheers.....Trevor
