Toyota RAV4 2002 4D4 Diesel EGR Valve removal and clean

Pretty easy to remove and clean the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) on a MK2 Rav Diesel.
Tools needed are 3/8" drive ratchet couple of extension bars 8,10,12mm sockets a mid-size screwdriver and a pair of pliers + one can carburettor cleaner.
Greatly improved the running of our Rav

After years of losing sockets when they drop down into the engine, I have developed a personal system of tearing off a bit of gaffer tape and sticking it onto the socket so that it remains safely on the extension … saves a lot of heartache.

Hello Tony.......Done that one a few times....also a bit of tape stuck over the end of a socket helps to keep a nut or a bolt in place while you manoeuvre it into position is another handy one... Cheers...Trevor

After EGR block, and straight pipe install, it sounds sick. Main problems with this engine are 2: dual mass flywheel, just install single mass flywheel. Injectors seals, replace every 30,000 miles, trust me.

Hello mate glad you like the video…… I try to be realistic and not too produced and pretentious…. Have you cleaned your mass airflow sensor? I replaced mine in the end found one on Amazon in a damaged box cheap difference was huge….. cheers……Trevor

Should them be cleand aswell? Can I spray something in there, or just brush it with a spiralbrush or something? Hope you can help me out. Thank you again!

Hello Albert...Thanks for the kind comment....!....No I didn't do anything with the pipes they seemed clean enough... always worth a good look at all the pipes around the EGR valve as well as the turbo pipes Iv'e seen them blocked, holes+ leaking, blown off and sometimes with age they go soft and will suck flat under acceleration all affecting performance..... a good thing for poking out is a old fashioned wire coat hanger straightened out or any other stiff wire fence wire good too... a piece of rag tired on tight with copper wire or a ty-rap cleans well....All the best ....Trevor

Hello. Thank you for the good video. Will try cleaning mine. I got recomended cleanin the egr. Trying to fix a 2004 Rav4, and it's problems are that it suddenly looses power, the acelerator pedal gets harder, and it spews black smoke. Hope it fixes it. No dashbord lights though

Hello.... You could try cleaning the mass airflow sensor too you can get a proper cleaner in cans from autoparts stores and amazon, Ebay etc... eventually my mass airflow sensor went it did bring dash board lights up replaced it with a new Denso branded one (don't buy cheap ones off eBay etc) the car went so much better after...another thing to check is the hoses sometimes they get soft with age and suck flat under acceleration....all the best....Trevor

Hi jetblack. My rav4 d4d 2003 has an ‘overboost’ issue at 3k revs when overtaking at higher speeds. Engine goes into limp mode. A restart seems to reset it. Does this sounds familiar? Erg valve or turbo itself?

Hello Johnny... to be honest I don't know ...I believe there is a pressure release valve.. I would have thought the turbo itself is working otherwise you would not have over-pressure... considering the easy of cleaning the the EGR valve I would do that before diving into anything else that costs money..... for example our turbo failed, you would know..... no power at all and the mother of all black smoke out the exhaust!! it cost £350 for a recon turbo which requires a pit to fit it and very long (like nearly a meter) socket extension bars as well as a vital oil and filter change... the Limp mode with mine was the Mass air flow sensor rather a different problem... good luck with it let me know how you get on...Cheers.... Hi Johnny, just a thought here but on volvo d5 engines there's a fairly common issue where the vanes on the variable geometry turbo can become coked up with carbon, causing the vanes to stick at certain rpm's, resulting in overboosting. Look up wyns turbo cleaner and read the reviews. Might be worth putting a bottle in the car and taking it a long run. Regards. Alex :)

@@jetblack11td thank you chum will try that now temp needle on car going to normal then suddenly drops away to nothing and car starts reviving by itself code came up p1366 witch says its ecu but a machine says dosnt think it is as suddenly goes back to normal when driven any ideas chum I was thinking maybe themerstat as it only revives when temp needle drops hope you can help thanks

Hello taz man not really sure about this you should have a look on the net for the code… my rav was too old to be OB2 compliant so I never put a code reader on it could it be the temp sensor that could be affecting the mixture ie bringing in the fuel enrichment like it’s a cold start…. Hello Duncan....Well it's worth a try...it's easy enough to do, a can of carburetor cleaner is about a fiver and some nuts and bolts work....I'd certainly do it before spending any real money......Cheers....Trevor

Yeah sounds about right .... I would think cleaning one on a Jeep is going to be pretty similar, not a lot of cost doing it just a can of carb cleaner...give it a go! ...Cheers....Trevor

Hello Aaron cleaning the EGR can make quite a difference a good place to start as it only costs a can of carb cleaner...Turbo Diesels like these like to be driven at fair speeds lots of local trips tend to bung up the EGR valves and the intake systems.....my son had a Seat which had the 1.9TDI VW engine...I had to remove in the intake manifold (@120K miles) and dig the carbon with a screwdriver and soak in oven cleaner..... It certainly went a lot quicker after! Mass airflow sensors, blocked or sucking flat air hoses...poor turbos can all cause poor acceleration.... Cheers.....Trevor

Hello David...Iv'e had a few problems in the past with blocked fuel filters...my old Citroen C15 van I used to carry one about...I conked out about 200 miles from home fortunately I was only about 1/2 mile from a Peugeot Dealer they charged me about 3 times as much as our local motor factor for one but much better than walking...
