Just be careful how you connect inside fuse box.

Hey dude, New Rav4 owner here, in a little bit of a pickle after installing these. Disclaimer: I'm not a car guy. This was really my first DIY attempt at adding a modification. Here's what happened. Two days ago, I installed raptor lights by following this video. After all, you made it look so easy. I clipped the lights into the grill and then moved on to wiring. I wrapped the (black) ground wire around a nearby bolt (not the battery) and secured it in place. Then for the power (red), the kit came with a little "add-a-fuse" type splitter for the fuse along with a 10amp fuse. I also decided to use the 7.5amp USB2 fuse located in the upper left corner of the fuse box. I plugged the "add-a-fuse" into the 7.5amp USB2 slot, and then put back the original 7.5amp fuse into one of the slots before filling the other slot with the 10amp fuse that came with the kit. (I suspect this is where I messed up). Anyways, I turned on the ignition and the raptor lights worked beautifully. I drove around the rest of the day, no problem. The next day, I was driving around and the dashboard tells me that the "Start Stop system" has a malfunction, and that it's been disabled and that I should see a dealer. I didn't sweat it, as I never really liked the system anyways. A few hours later, I see a "battery charging" alert on the dash. Again, didn't think anything of it. Then today (the second day), I was dropping my daughter off at school when she started playing with the power windows. Suddenly, I felt the steering wheel lock up (lose power steering). I look at my dash, and a whole myriad of alerts and lights lit up. The power steering symbol, the parking brake malfunction, the battery symbol, and several other system alerts. It was honestly scary and overwhelming. Panicked, I managed to immediately pull over and shut off my engine. Upon trying to restart it, I realized it wouldn't start. Very similar to a dead battery type situation, the dash lit up but the car wouldn't start- only make that clicking sound that we all dread. I managed to get someone to jump start my car, which worked at first, but immediately died a few moments after... which in my very limited knowledge of cars means that it's the alternator, right? Anyways, I remove the raptor lights completely (removed the ground wire from the bolt, and removed the "add-a-fuse" from the USB2 slot, putting back in the original 7.5amp fuse). I checked to make sure that fuse wasn't blown and it wasn't. Then we try jumping it again, this time leaving the cables on for 30 minutes. But no luck. After disconnecting, the car died a few moments later again. I've since had the car towed back to my home, but I'm confused, frustrated, and honestly a bit embarrassed feeling like I must have made a real rookie mistake without even knowing it. So many people seemed to have had such an easy time installing these lights. Right now, all I can think about it that I must have made a dumb mistake with the fuses. Maybe I should have only put one of the fuses back in the "add-a-fuse" instead of both? (10amp + 7.5amp in a 7.5amp slot) Maybe they should have been reversed in terms of which slot they were in? (Does that matter?) Anyway, I'm really hoping I didn't really mess up my car in a costly way. What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks. Reply

First of all these, light will not cause any problems because it connected to a fuse usb power outlet. I think your battery terminal got loose or your battery is weak now. Also it is very very important how you jump start the vehicle. You never want to jump start vehicle by connecting terminals directly.,did you connect negative cable to the metal engine mount? Disconnect battery completely for 30 minutes then when you reconnect everything make sure battery terminals are tight. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6S3nqpmZ61rqdk time 6:24 what I think happened you did not tighten the battery connector and it got loose. the battery wasn’t charging properly so your battery needs proper charging. Watch the video link above times 624. It’s very important how do you jumpstart vehicle. Charge your battery when its out of the car, but trickle charger and charge it in the garage. I think you simply drained your battery. Also good idea to have volt meter, so you can check your battery voltage which should be more than 12 volts if car is running.

@@nazarettos6987 Thanks for the reply!! I feel like I couldn't have caused it too because yes, it just went into the USB outlet and none of the fuses are blown. But the timing feels too impeccable to be a coincidence, right? The day after I installed the raptor lights? I double checked the battery terminals and the bolts were tight. I removed the battery today and had it tested at an auto parts store, and the result was healthy despite being very weak (less than 12v). They were able to charge it fully in 3 hours, and test it again. Again, healthy. So now feeling like its the alternator or circuit damage? As for jumping the car, I jumped it the way I have always jumped cars. By connecting to the two terminals on the battery on both the donor and receiving vehicle. Is that what you mean by "connecting terminals directly?" I shouldn't be doing it that way?

@@hollywoodhusky did you ever figure out what was wrong? Is your battery good now? I’m asking because there was a class action suit against toyota rav4 for what they called a parasitic drain on their batteries. It sounded a lot like what happened to you.
@hollywoodhusky Жыл бұрын
@@moeswayseldom12 Hey man, I never really figured it out. I took it to two mechanics and they both thought it was the alternator and just coincidental timing in terms of the raptor lights installation. I'm not totally sure about that as I had driven it for almost a month, almost 1500 miles, without issue and then the day after the raptor lights installation these problems started. I ended up taking it to a Toyota dealership to have it looked it, without mentioning the raptor lights (removed all traces). They too said it was a bad alternator. I purchased the car through Carmax, which came with warranty. So I asked them to fix/replace the alternator. They "fixed" it, only for it to fail again. I brought it back to them a second time, and again it was "fixed." But it again failed. I got fed up and just returned the vehicle altogether. Ended up buying a new 2023 from the Toyota dealership. Not planning on messing with raptor lights again after all that haha.
@moeswayseldom12 Жыл бұрын
@@hollywoodhusky it may have just been a coincidence after installing raptor lights because i heard about many 2020-2021 rav4s having battery and alternator problems even with low miles on them. Like i said there was mention of a class action suit against toyota. Probably a good idea that you got a newer model because from what i hear, 2022 and 2023 have been fixed from that problem, but not the older models. I dont blame you for not wanting to install any lights after that lol.

Hi, I heard that the top fuse power should be lower than the bottom fuse on the fuse tape order. In this case, 10A on top while 7.5A on the bottom of the fuse tape, does it still ok? Or should I get another 7.5A fuse on top and works with original 7.5A fuse? Thanks

Can’t we connect the raptor light to any of the spare fuse. I can see there are many spare slots and current only flow when the car is on. Also is Raptor light Toyota certified
@nazarettos69872 жыл бұрын
Yes you can connect these lights to spare fuses,but it can not overload that fuse to wich you connect. No Toyota does not certainly aftermarket stuff, they only want to make money for themselves on their own products. These light nit gonna void any warranty as long as you don’t fry anything electronically.

You didn't make sure the fuse tap was plugged in the correct way. Get it wrong and both circuits draw current only through one of the fuses ! Both fuses need to draw power from the side that has power on it. That is easily tested while the original fuse is removed and the power is on. The other side will measure 0 volts with a test light or voltmeter.
@rpasco93522 ай бұрын
That wad of electrical tape "protecting" the wire splice is really ugly and is not really waterproof. It's OK only if you live in southern California ! Use a self-sealing waterproof butt splice connector to make it reliable and durable.
