The benefit of drain the Toyota transmission fluid when the engine hot is more fluid came out. Then let it drips overnight to get the fluid off as much as possible. Finally, fill in exactly fluid volume was taken off at room temperature. No other youtubers mentioned to drain fluid when it hot. I think you bring up the best method to change the Toyota seal transmission fluid with minimal tool required for the do it yourself car lover. I will follow your method to do for my Toyota cars and other seal transmission car. Thank you so much.

Technically for this car with the tube. You need to have the car heat up to 104 - 113 and let any excess fluid out. How you will know how hot? Use a thermo gun in the pan.

Good overall but several points: 1. You can’t rely on putting same amount in that came out. It may not be correct and every time you do it you continue building on the error. You need to do the proper temp check. Your way will work in a pinch but not a good idea long term 2. you don’t need a pump. Get yourself a vinyl tube and feed it down from either the wheel well or the engine compartment. Have a funnel attached to the vinyl tube. Gravity feed.!! pumps are a waste and bring in all sorts of issues that you described. 3. Fill bolt is 24 mm which is close to 15/16 but all Toyotas are metric 4. Great job leaving it overnight and getting an extra amount. 5. Measuring the temperature like you did when it was 78° on the pan and in the quart bottle is too funny. Although everyone says this fluid expands it is absolutely insignificant in the temperature range that you’re talking about. I did a test from 70° to 180° and noticed NO significant volumetric change of Toyota WS. If you don’t believe me, do it yourself. The big driver, in having the correct temperature is the internals of the transmission. There are volumetric changes within the internals that take up more fluid as the temperature rises. That’s why the temperature is such an important part and you totally are missing this aspect. 6. The straw has to seat properly into the pan. There is a time as you’re replacing it that it gets tight and then loosens again. It’s a critical that you screw it all the way in so that it bottoms out without putting too much force on it. For my car this is an additional nine rotations once it’s flat with the pan when you’re installing it. 7. Change the strainer every hundred thousand miles. 8. Do that approximately 2 quart drain and fill every 25 to 30,000 miles 9. Using an equivalent pale or old jug to be able to mark the exact amount and replace it with the exact amount. It’s a great technique for all car repairs involving fluids. Nice video!

@@brycek6881 - doing the proper procedure by draining the overfill is what I meant. You can’t just assume what came out he put back in because then you’re assuming what was in there was right in the first place and that’s a bad assumption. whether you believe the temperature or not approach, you need to drain the overfill to get to the proper level

@@condor5635 fantastic clarification. For those who want a complete fluid exchange vs an approx 40% pan exchange: 1.) Remove the plastic shield under the front of the vehicle. Note, new assorted plastic push-clips are recommended. 2.) The radiator cooler transmission fluid out-fall is on the drivers side approx 3/4" OD, 3/8" ID rubber hose with spring clasp clamp. 3.) Disconnect the hose and attach an extension line to a translucent 1gal jug in an catch pan (for overflow/spills). 4.) The steel return line may drip into a second catch pan. 5.) Snuggly attach a clear extension line to the dip-stick tube with a funnel. (I inserted a clear plastic kitchen "baster" keeping the refill level from overflowing at top of the "baster"/funnel). 6.) Start the engine and put in gear (automatic) until approx 1/2 gal OLD is collected and turn off engine. 7.) Fill approx 1/2 gal NEW. 8.) Repeat for approx 2 1/2 gals until bright pink is dispensing. 9.) Reattach radiator/trans Return line. 10.) Adjust fluid level to the low side of the "Cold" mark on dip-stick (so you can top-off to the Hot mark). 11.) Drive vehicle until transmission is up to approx 115 deg. F and adjust fluid level to "Hot" mark. 12.) Reattach the plastic shield using new plastic push-pins. 13.) This should replace the trans, torque converter, and radiator cooler with All New fluid. Happy motoring!

Hello there, I recently did a CV axle repair on my 2018 Rav4 XLE, I had about a 3/4 to 1 cup of trans fluid come out when I removed the axle. I knew I needed to replace the fluid, but had none at hand. I slowly tested it in my alley for issues and no noises or shifting interruptions. Since the oil leaked out and really have no accurate amount of fluid loss I want to just do a flush and replace before driving it again. How will I know how much to replace? Obviously will follow your protocol, but the losss of some of the fluid will create an innacurracy right?

I don't like AT ALL that Toyota doesn't provide a "Dip Stick".... Why? Because dealers especially like to **** YOU by not putting all your Fluid in. My Chevy Dealer literally ruined my Transmission when I had them flush it by not putting in like HALF of its fluid, after driving it for a day, they ruined my Transmission that only had 60K on it. Worse, I didn't fully realize what they had done until a YEAR later... when I had the dealer properly check the fluid level. I won't get into the reasons why it took so long to properly check the level, health etc. Anyway, now I always check my Fluid levels after taking them to have fluids changed. But now I CAN'T cause I have the danged Rav4.

No car shop is waiting for 3-4 hours to cool down to do the job even dealer. I like to hear yr opinion on this. I don’t think any shop will hold the car overnight to do this. I m afraid to do myself. Thanks.

Shops will not wait since they all should have the right equipment to measure the level properly after fill. What I have done and showed that its possible without the expensive equipment but if you have a scanner and can read the transmissions temperature on it then you can also measure that way by removing the upper plug on the oil pan and let the excessive fluid out after the trans riches the right temp or add fluid if nothing comes out, thats after the final fill of course.

yes its lifetime of the transmission until it breaks, in other words change it and it will last longer. As far as the 100k mile rule its only true if the trans is already giving you issues then dont change it or just do a drain and fill, no flush. A drain and fill is always safer then a flush on an older transmission, just do it more often, every 30k on cvt trans and every 50k on regular trans.

Since it is on an aluminum surface, where you can't really torque to what crush washers need, I was wondering if it was just a washer, or a thin rolled up crush washer that uses less torque to form and seal, or made from some other material. For the drain one, I couldn't see at all, but that's not an issue, since you have to torque the drain plug to 30 ft/lbs and that would be more than enough to crush an aluminum washer without problems.
