Toyota Rav4 Radio/Console Continually Resetting

This happened to me around March of 2018 and based on my research it's a reoccuring defect with these consoles.
I called Toyota and they did make me pay for a diagnostic where they determined (surprise) that the unit didn't work.
After that I called Toyota and at first they wanted me to pay full out of pocket for the repair of about $1K. I pushed back noting that this is a reoccurring issue with the models, they get to keep/fix/resell my broken unit, and that my family has a history of Toyota ownership.
Ultimately the brand loyalty won them over (the rep noted brand loyalty makes a big impact when they make case considerations) and they offered me "goodwill" where they lowered the repair to about $600-700 and we split the cost 50-50. My out of pocket ended in the neighborhood of $300-400.
My current unit is still working fine and it came with a 1 year warranty. That being said Toyota definitely knows of the issue and if it happens to my new unit I'll probably consider third party stereo equipment.

@@airizzy25 we took it to the dealership and talked to the manager, they'll fix it for $1400. I even called the corporate office, but the lady said she can't do anything about it. Up to this day , it's still dead.

I have the exact same problem with my 2015 Camry SE. Based on my limited understanding, the infotainment computer failed to reboot for an unknown reason. I didn't go down deeper into software/operating system issues. What I did was by replacing the computer that is located right behind the screen. If you are tech-savvy and willing to take a risk, you can do it by yourself. If not, let somebody (technician) do it for you. I did it by myself and save myself from handing out $1300-$1500 to the Toyota dealership.

Happening to my friend's RAV4 2014 as well. All research indicates this is not fixable without replacement. There is always the possibility of somehow resetting the cache by flashing a specific area of the internal chip... It's clearly a bad firmware or sorts, blows my mind that the only option is replacement.

I want to tear it apart, hardwire to a pc via serial and use the raw data to search for a way to do this. Does anyone know a decent reverse engineer? I think they could make a lot people happy

Just changed my dead battery and the same thing happened to my RAV4. I don’t see a quick fix here except taking it in to the dealers and pay a hefty fee for a replacement. 😢

My 2018 Rav 4 ... Radio started flickering and stuff last night. Today it's just dead. I changed the fuse but nada. Damn this blows. I might get an android radio too

It seems when some of us disconnect our battery, this exact problem occurs. I had to take my car in for a recall problem before I could register my 2014 Corolla. They said it was an airbag problem and they also did a software update. Seems kind of fishy I get a software update and then this happens.

2014 same issue just happened today this is an obvious defect in that years model which is apparent there are numerous infractions with many people. Should be a full on recall for that ridiculous cost to replace. Toyota not getting my money.

If you have an extension on your warranty, take it in and get it fixed that way.

Had platinum warranty , Toyota replaced it because it was covered but they showed me the bill and it was $1300

hi, i recently had that problem on my 2016 Rav4, try to turn on the radio without the map card, then if it turns on properly you can put the card in place.

This just happened to our 2014 RAV4. The backup camera still works. Seems odd. Tried disconnecting battery. Didn’t work. Found two units with identical code on eBay for $900 and local guy who said he’d swap out for $200. Any advise anyone? Does this make sense?? Seems like the only solution.

They won't do a recall unless people contact Toyota and provide their VIN numbers/details. That's the only thing that will force a recall. Otherwise, they're just hoping that people pay out of their own pockets to replace these radio systems. BTW, the replacements aren't new, they are "REFURBISHED" units with only a 30 day warranty. BUT, if people would contact Toyota and force the recall, EVERYONE who has paid out of pocket for these defective units to be replaced, would then be reimbursed in full. Unfortunately, if people don't report it to Toyota, it's not going to be recalled and thousands more will pay the price too.

@@delpheniatillman5641 I contacted Toyota Canada Corporate office. I was informed that they are "dealing with these issues on an individual basis". "They can't do a recall on these unless people start calling in/contacting them and providing their VIN's/details." I negotiated with them and they ended up getting my local dealership to provide the radio system at cost and then paid 50% of the total cost (including labour). It ended up costing me $868 as opposed to the original $2,200 quote (but they only replace them with "REFURBISHED" units - which tells you right there that they should be doing a recall, and they only come with a 30 day warranty). HERE'S THE KICKER, if EVERYONE (or a large majority) who has had to replace these would contact Toyota (whether it's in Canada or the U.S., etc.), then that would force a recall and they would have to REIMBURSE everyone who has paid for to have them replaced! Instead of them doing the right thing and just doing a recall on them, they're hoping that people just pay for it and move on and for those who do complain, they offer some sort of compensation to keep them quiet. It's just not right. But until people start to contact them directly and complain, nothing will be done about it. Best of luck to you! :-)
