Thanks for the video - very helpful! I just purchased used 2013 Rav4, ~125K miles, and the transmission pan was leaking. I changed the filter and pan gasket. I did the drain and re-fill twice. The fluid could have been changed a 3rd or 4th time, for sure. Also, when setting the level my oil did not change to a dribble-trickle like in the video. Each time the stream just slowed down to a thin and thinner stream. I had to decide it was thin enough, then put the plug back in. Also, my drain plug and pan tube had a T40 instead of Allen-hex style, not sure if that is common. Car is shifting gears very smoothly, hoping it stays that way. Thanks again.

I live in the "rust belt" and plenty of deer around so we will see. These videos really help the DIY guys. I also get why a person doesn't want to risk it though. A very helpful video but one thing I just recently found out the hard way, is that when removing the pan it holds much more oil than I anticipated even though, I drained it thoroughly or so I thought. The drain plug hole has a raised portion inside which prevents the pan from completely draining. And there was it seemed to be at least a quart left in the pan which easily causes it to tip, tilt and splash all over one.

Excellent video! Unfortunately the U760F AWD transaxle in my 2013 Rav4 started making an awful like wheel bearing noise at the left front output shaft (located at the left front CV axle.) Sadly the toyota dealer claimed to have replaced the fluid 50k miles prior during the torque convertor campaign. There is a bearing inside the transmission that failed. Fluid looks very awful. Getting a reman transmission installed because this trans will become questionable just fixing the few components that failed. We just paid the car off too! 🤦‍♂️. The differential fluid and transfer case (power transfer unit) fluid is crazy easy to change, so I'm going to change that out with 75w90 fully synthetic. (Toyota calls for 75w85 but several owners use 75w90 fully synthetic gear oil). Very cheap insurance on another forgotten fluid!

Awesome video but I have 2 question if someone could answer. Is that black inner plastic pan the filter?! 1. I was expecting the filter to look like the air filter or like an oil filter .....I don't see any filter media or thing to replace. 2. Why do you purge out that oil till it trickles at the end? Aren't you lowering the level? Or are you just getting out trapped air with that oil? 3. How do you know how much to add? You measure when you drain it but then add extra.....how do you know exactly how much to add extra? Is it like changing the rear diff where you add till it starts to come out the fill plug? (Guessing not because then you wouldn't need to measure the old TF at all. Thanks to whoever knows! Thanks for the video also you did a great job with the explanation and camera angles!
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 4 ай бұрын
Hi TJ, thanks. 1) if you fast forward to around 6:12 minutes in the video you will see the transmission fluid filter in black color. 2) The proper level for these transmissions is to fill with fresh fluid, then to heat up the transmission to operating temperatures and then drain out whatever comes out. If nothing drains, add more fluid until it drains. The proper level is then achieved at operating temp. Transmission fluid expands as it is heated. 3) It is like differential except at operating temp. I gave the exact temp range in the video to check and drain. I hope these answer your questions. Now, if you don't want to bother with draining and measuring the temp, put back in the exact amount you take out but be sure to drain and fill at the same temp. Also, that is contingent on the assumption that whoever did it last time filled in the proper amount....

I know everyone says to put more than you took out, then get it to operating temperature specific range then take it the extra. I usually measure exactly how much came out, then put back the same amount. I make sure all the fluid that comes out gets collected. And the whole thing about when the fluid heats up it extends is true, but think about it, even if it's hot when it comes out, let it cool on the side, then measure it and put back the same amount cold

Hello Walid, I have dealt with this issue a lot in this thread. As long as you are not underfilling, you should be ok. But to be sure, you have to maintain the same temperature, and know that it was filled properly last time. What I show is what the Toyota workshop manual states...

Thank you very much for the explanation A few months ago I changed the ATF oil at a mechanic without changing the filter because the original filter was not available and according to toyota it is not advisable to change either the oil or the filter because it is for life!!!! But I know very well that each fluid has its lifespan The problem is that my mechanic cleaned the crankcase and filled 5 liters ATF without draining the extra Can this cause problems if I leave the oil level high? And for the filter, what brand would you advise me to buy? Because there are thousands to choose from, and most of them are from the bad range.
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 9 ай бұрын
Hi Anis, of course, it would if he added 5 quarts without draining the old fluid. There is no room for 5 quarts of additional oil, so he must have. These transmissions are very sensitive. The oil is Toyota WS transmission fluid.

Hi Nilo, there is a vertical track approximately 1 to 1.5 inches tall made of heavy metal parallel and perpendicularly attached to the body frame underneath on both sides. Then, right after front and before rear tires (just a few inches away from the wheels), you will notice 2 half circled carvings on the same tracks indicating exactly where the jack stands should go. Take a look and let me know if you cannot find them. This applies to most Toyotas, not just the RAV4's.

Thanks for the video. Once the transmission reaches the 107-109 degrees, shouldn't you turn the vehicle off and then open the drain plug to allow the excess fluid to come out? I imagine if you open it while running, the fluid is likely circulating in the pan and may not give you a good indication of the oil level? I've also read that you may want to drain the fluid out again from the pan again after driving the car for 20 mins., as there is a lot of old fluid in the system?

I’m seeing so much conflicting information. Many saying not to change trans filter. Thoughts on why you did it?
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 27 күн бұрын
Hello Andrew. That is akin to asking why change the engine oil and filter. It is because of all the moving parts, the gears, the friction, and the resulting heat. All these gears and friction points must be kept well oiled to avoid scoring and deformities. The oil too has to change regularly to maintain its working properties. Then some friction or metallic savings will still get loose and must be filtered out - not cycled back into the engine or transmission valves. Hence, the need for filters and replacing filters periodically. Don't listen to the nay sayers. They really don't know. Think about it logically. How about the example of fryer oil and French fries in restaurants. How long to keep the same oil? The oil is changed,, and, the potatoe debris are filtered out, regularly. Now some manufacturers may claim the transmission oil is good for life. They lie too but for a different reason. Profit.

Hi Networth. The procedure in the video follows the Toyota workshop method with the presumption that not everyone can afford the wait time. As long as you can measure the fluid temp at the time of draining and ensure it matches that of the replacement fluid, you would be ok. Otherwise, it is best to underfill or overfill by half a quart or so, bring car to operating temp, and then drain to trickle.

Sorry, I didn't see this comment before. You are correct in that it is not called a filter. But it is not a dipstck either, albeit it serves that function. I am not sure what Toyota officially calls it. But it is a secondary drain plug with an inner tube designed to indicate whether the pan contains sufficient fluid. If oil drains out, it means it flows over the height of the plug and out/down the inner tube. Overflow plug may be?

watch again, particularly for the plastic insert cylinder that goes into the drain hole BEFORE the metal plug. It sticks UP from the bottom of the pan. Fresh new fluid will fill up to that level, then after it has expanded by warming up, any surplus will spill over and out through that tube. So the top end of that plastic tube (which can't actually be seen once installed) serves as the correct oil level gauge.

Hi, if you pay close attention, the plug was replaced right as it started to tricle. Also, please consider that the engine is still running and it takes time to open the plug. Meanwhile, the fluid temp keeps rising and the fluid keeps expanding. Believe me, that is the correct moment to plug it. I have followed the same method on two other Rav4's. No issues. Actually, some mechanics let it tricle to almost nothing and then add a third or half a quart afterwards. I think that is too much.

Why you care about the transmission fluid temperature? The goal is to ensure the new fluid added has equal amount to the old fluid. If you drain the old fluid at room temperature and pump the same amount of new fluid back to the transmission at the same temperature, the goal can be archived.

@datadata-di1lp
@datadata-di1lp 5 ай бұрын
Hi my friend. Let me ask you back why we need to know the exact level last time. Let me ask a logic question. Do you agree the goal of changing transmission fluid is to make sure no change to the level of the fluid in the transmission? Do you agree the same amount of fluid has same level of fluid at the same temperature? If both answers are yes, then, I think it is a simple math count: at the SAME temperature (e.g., room temperature), the amount of fluid removed + the same amount of new fluid added = no amount change. It means no level change. We achieved the goal. Any logic issue? In my opinion, the manual suggesting the higher temperature might be intended to increase the fluid flow-ability. BUT if the fluid can drain out, how much benefit of more flow-ability than less flow-ability? I believe it's little if any. I'm not saying we need to against the manual. But I feel we might be better to ask ourselves why the manual says so and how much sense it makes. @@masood-tv

Ok, if the transmission fluid has been changed with incorrect amount in the past already, after then changing the same amount of fluid cannot make sure the amount can restore to the original amount. I agree your method can help to restore it to the original amount. Let's say another case: If there was no transmission fluid change in the past, as a first transmission fluid change, can we just simple change the same amount of fluid at room temperature? I believe it's the easy and more accurate method. Please let me know your thoughts. @@masood-tv

@masood-tv

Hi JP Smith - you are somewhat right. No arguments here. I was using it in the generic sense. While it provides hydraulic functions, it also lubricates the transmission gears inside like an oil. That is why some call it gear oil. Non-synthetic transmission fluid has a different viscosity from engine oils and it is still made from crude oil. I have referred to it as fluid in other videos...regardless, thanks for the comment and I hope you found the video useful.
