@@KA9DSL I will add I test drove a Mach-E last summer and it was amazing. 2022, like 20K miles, MINT condition. Only $31K. The car was killer, a total rocket ship. Alas, my daughter skis, so we need to do 350mi roundtrips sometimes and my wife didn't want to deal with charging, even if was just supercharging like 15 mins, lol. So, I scored a 2021 Rav Prime in very good condition for $29.5K. I got 1328 miles out of a single tank of gas once. Most of the time about 1050-1100 miles. Our other car is a 2020 Leaf, still has 12 bars "battery health," about ~98% battery capacity. We use it every trip sub 150 miles round trip. Ultimate commuter car, we get 5.1 miles per kWh in the summer. Cost $16980 in August 2023 minus "Clean Vehicle Credit" ($4000), so $13980. So far average $52/month in energy cost driving just over 1000 miles/month. Also, I test drove the Bz model too, but brand new was just too much $.

Agree that Toyota is trying to get market share. Also, if you sell enough cars your breakeven point on costs can be reached. While the interior is different and all one color, that doesn't necessarily indicate that it Not made with cheap materials Also, Toyota has no option in China but to co-produce any cars sold in China with a Chinese firm, so the opted to rely solely on the Chinese product. Lastly, Toyota has a good reputation for quality in other countries in the world, so it could be a good for helping sales of their global produces and maybe in the Chinese market which is one of the biggest in the world. You mentioned previously BYD putting pressure on supply chains to cut costs. They knew Toyota wasn't going to just sit back and die. Toyota has one of the strongest brands in the world. This is a reestablishment of that.

Batteries have gotten cheaper. Automation has made good builds cheaper. Perhaps the pricing is in anticipation of further reduction of cost to capture attention and market share at a loss. Price can always be increased if necessary, especially after word of mouth about experience of quality has spread.

If Toyota decided to keep/restore a presence in the Chinese car market, I'm not sure they have a choice but to compete in the current battle. It doesn't seem to make sense, and they probably conceded more on price than necessary, but long-term (if they survive) it may pay off after a market adjustment, which is inevitable. The alternative is to down-size considerably and firm a new plan, but it's all a gamble. It will be interesting to watch this strategy play out over time. Great for customers, in the meantime, as mentioned by Sam.

I think it’s smart use other markets to fund the Chinese market to watch a few brands fail faster while gaining market share and force other companies to compete on more than price
@markboscawen8330

Toyota is likely thinking that undercutting Chinese brands in China, & perhaps causing a few to fail, is better than letting those Chinese companies get strong enough from domestic sales to then launch head to head with them in other markets.

So, because this car has a Toyota logo and name on it, does it mean the price of this car in the US will be about the same as that in Australia? (I'm thinking that Japanese cars are not tax as heavy as Chinese cars in the US).
