It's not really that surprising that ev's can be made that cheap. It's more like, what took you so long. I mean it's basically an electric scooter with a nice cabin, suspension, and a fridge, right? No catalytic exhaust system, no big cooling system, no transmission, no engine crate, no engine, no fuel system, no oil circulation system, no ignition system, no extensive sensor system to keep the engine operating

@Suburp212 martintsang1662. My EV has a small battery ( 30kwhr ) It can be swapped out but the financial cost to replace it is not economically viable. My car is nearly 9 years old with little more than 40k miles on the clock but has 42% degradation, with 5 out of 12 battery bars lost.

This is a bit off-topic. However, in a previous video, the Japanese government bought fleets of electric vehicles from China because they were unavailable in Japan. The fleets will be used for critical work and for grid energy storage, making ICE cars worthless by comparison. Using EVs as general-purpose energy storage should be a big eye-opener.

Yes, it requires changing the whole grid so people can charge cars while at work. But we have to change something to avoid climate change. One Party here wants to put Nuclear Power in Australia, but an independent report was just released that says Nuclear is still double the price of Solar, including the price of battery storage. If we speed up that battery storge rollout using people's cars, that's an option.

As said by a number in comments, it may not be the best but I’m glad to see Toyota has now committed to BEV recognizing they have to more on market share. No EV to market was perfect but when you drive around and see them on the road, you more likely to test drive. It’s called matching customer needs, battery capacity to match majority buyer needs. Unlike many Legacy that have more high priced modes than affordable commuter.

@@jjhmlstxNot necessarily. A 1981 Toyota Tercel was a very basic and very cheap car but extremely good quality. I had one that I sold with 365k miles on it. Never had any major service, pretty much oil changes, tires, etc. Yeah, the interior was very basic but the entire car held up well and never let me down. I'd call that cheap but high quality. BTW, when I sold it at 365k miles, it was working fine, I just wanted something different. For all I know, it's still running today

@@KA9DSL I will add I test drove a Mach-E last summer and it was amazing. 2022, like 20K miles, MINT condition. Only $31K. The car was killer, a total rocket ship. Alas, my daughter skis, so we need to do 350mi roundtrips sometimes and my wife didn't want to deal with charging, even if was just supercharging like 15 mins, lol. So, I scored a 2021 Rav Prime in very good condition for $29.5K. I got 1328 miles out of a single tank of gas once. Most of the time about 1050-1100 miles. Our other car is a 2020 Leaf, still has 12 bars "battery health," about ~98% battery capacity. We use it every trip sub 150 miles round trip. Ultimate commuter car, we get 5.1 miles per kWh in the summer. Cost $16980 in August 2023 minus "Clean Vehicle Credit" ($4000), so $13980. So far average $52/month in energy cost driving just over 1000 miles/month. Also, I test drove the Bz model too, but brand new was just too much $.

If this is a killer, then it will kill Toyota, itself coz it's built by GAC, with GAC architecture using Beijing based Momento ADAS software and using BYD blade battery with (probably) using Chinese Hesai Lidars (largest global Lidar maker). This car is funded by Toyota ICE sales n this will melt their own ICE And therefore their funding.

Agree that Toyota is trying to get market share. Also, if you sell enough cars your breakeven point on costs can be reached. While the interior is different and all one color, that doesn't necessarily indicate that it Not made with cheap materials Also, Toyota has no option in China but to co-produce any cars sold in China with a Chinese firm, so the opted to rely solely on the Chinese product. Lastly, Toyota has a good reputation for quality in other countries in the world, so it could be a good for helping sales of their global produces and maybe in the Chinese market which is one of the biggest in the world. Hope that this video increases the number of viewers you get. You touched on the right points to get viewers' attention.

It reminds me of the price trajectory of Flat Screen TVs. The Western and some of the Asian Automakers are screwed, and it is only a matter of time. What should the price be of an affordable electric car? 15K USD, 20K, 30K, ... 80K? We need to start thinking about electric autos as appliances, because that is where it is headed, as it should. Batteries have gotten cheaper. Automation has made good builds cheaper. Perhaps the pricing is in anticipation of further reduction of cost to capture attention and market share at a loss. If Toyota decided to keep/restore a presence in the Chinese car market, I'm not sure they have a choice but to compete in the current battle. It doesn't seem to make sense, and they probably conceded more on price than necessary, but long-term (if they survive) it may pay off after a market adjustment, which is inevitable. The alternative is to down-size considerably and firm a new plan, but it's all a gamble. It will be interesting to watch this strategy play out over time. Great for customers, in the meantime, as mentioned by Sam.

I think it’s smart use other markets to fund the Chinese market to watch a few brands fail faster while gaining market share and force other companies to compete on more than price

Toyota is likely thinking that undercutting Chinese brands in China, & perhaps causing a few to fail, is better than letting those Chinese companies get strong enough from domestic sales to then launch head to head with them in other markets.

So, because this car has a Toyota logo and name on it, does it mean the price of this car in the US will be about the same as that in Australia? (I'm thinking that Japanese cars are not tax as heavy as Chinese cars in the US).
