We ended up buying our 1983 Toyota Sunrader motorhome on 8/1/2020 with the intention of doing a quick makeover and getting to enjoy it before summer was over. The same day we ended up gutting almost the entire interior and rebuilding from scratch. With Jesse's eye for interior design, our RV looked brand new and modern at the end of our 2 month’s renovation! If you have any questions in regard to anything we did or any Toyota tech / RV questions in general feel free to ask below :) We had no plans to ever make this video otherwise we would have done a better job documenting everything.
Sorry about the audio being loud in some areas, we had to cover the copyrighted music in the background

I am planning on throwing a 2/3RZ in it and retaining that 4-cylinder power when I come across an affordable donor/swap.

I congratulate you on your work. It looks great. But, whatever camera and format you used to record, get rid of the camera and record on a standard or wide format.

I had one of these, decades ago, think it was the dolphin. the thing was scary on the highway, putting along top speed 50-55, sometimes as slow as 45 climbing grades, with trucks and cars whizzing past you and in some cases almost running into the back of it. kinda dangerous i remember.

I once thought a Toyota was the right rv for me however I couldn’t find a good one and learned why it isn’t since. You have to be aware of every pound you add to one because they are easily overloaded with drastic consequences. I urge you to have it weighed, because your steel floor might push it over the edge. I exited at the new toilet and didn’t stay to the end The Tiger I accidentally found while looking for the Toyota turned out to be the perfect small motorhome

They're not for everyone but if you're willing to put up with being under powered and having to pack light, they can't be beat due in regard to their reliability/durability. Even then you can remedy some of the issues you addressed such as upgraded rear springs, airbags, shocks etc. You can also swap in a 3rz or a 5vz-fe relatively easily for a little bit more grunt. My steel reinforcements probably added approximately 10-15 pounds. We probably shaved well over 100 pounds through this remodel by the removal of a closet by the rear door, passenger side upper cabinets, the "L" part of the previous couch and getting rid of the swivel chairs.

There's a reason why these old toyotas pull the money that they still do... The reliability can't be matched, yes they're a bit underpowered but that also makes them efficient! It will never get you anywhere fast....... but it will always get you there!

If I remember correctly, isn't the rear axle on them involved in a class action lawsuit with Toyota and that's why they abandoned the concept.

Yes there was a NHTSA recall on the 5 lug axles. When the 5 lug breaks, the axle snaps off before the hub assembly potentially causing you to lose full control. In 1986, they upgraded to the 1 Ton 6 Lug Full Floating style axle. This did have some impact on the demise of the Toyota motorhome concept due to the manufacturers having to eat the cost on replacing the upgraded axles. The Toyota pickup chassis was not designed to support nearly 3 tons of weight that some of these units were weighing.

I'd have been interested to see what you did for power. Any solar, lithium batteries, inverter, etc?
@DougGoneWild
@DougGoneWild Жыл бұрын
At the time, we opted out of doing solar/additional power additions due to not wanting to spend much time off the grid. We also wanted to get the build done in a relatively decent timeline. I did research it during this however back in 2020 a lot of the panels/inverters were back ordered.
