Toyota Superstrut Camber Control Arm & Figure 8 Replacement

Doing some maintenance on the Toyota Super Strut System. Today we'll walk you through how to replace the camber control arm and figure eight links on the Toyota Celica GT4 WRC.

This is called the Toyota Super Strut Suspension. I had it back in the days in my Toyota Trueno. Car handled like a dream when the suspension was tight and in tune, but that little arm that connected the strut to the lower control was the weak link which certainly wasn't designed for the crap roads I had to drive on daily. I quite liked it and would like to see a 2.0 iteration sometime in the future.

Just did my figure 8's on my st205 following this video. Was a pain for the first side because I had the hub removed first, which I strongly recommend against. Much easier with the hub intact. Thanks for the content!

What's the torque specs to the banana arm?

The figure 8 joint is the camber control arm, the longer arm is just called a lower control arm. Also I am amazed how easily they came off. You usually need a puller

This was the closest to a tutorial on removing the actual super struts as I could find Have noise coming from the figure eights on my st202 so gonna bookmark this for when I can get the parts. Speaking of which what site would you recommend for figure 8s and camber control arms

Is there a reason you didn't grease the fig 8 to the control arm?, metal on metal?, I'm just doing mine now on my trueno and wondering if I should grease?

What kind of inner bushing you used in lower support arm?

Can the bushings and ball joints not be replaced in the arms do you have to to replace the whole assembly?

You have to buy the whole arms. It's a pain in the ass.

You can get the ball joints refurbished at an engineers.

I imagine there's a reason they don't build systems like this anymore (unless they do, IDK). Maybe the complexity or cost of it is too much compared to other suspension setups?

I need to take out the hub ball joint in my SS suspension to be repaired. Do you think this is possible to do at home or would it need to be pressed out. Super strut is such a bitch

Hey im on the edge of buying a t20 gt superstrut im a novice in therms of mechanic work do you think its a project car for a beginner? i fear that it could be too much. my gfs dad is a toyota mechanic so he is going to look over the work i do but i have conserns about the availibility of the parts i need for the superstrut. it would be nice to hear some feedback from someone who knows these cars and what to look out for! :) thanks in advance

I know it's a late reply but I recommend against it. It wears out very fast on bad roads and a new set is expensive as hell (1500 euros here for the full set of arms), whereas a normal macpherson lower arm would be around 100 euros and fairly easy to replace. Id rather get one with macpherson suspension and put coilovers and poly bushes.

Sure this is a rally car. But Toyota never used the Super Sturt Suspension on their actually rally car because it would have cost them time to swap out any of the components that wears out.

I did the other side a few days later and it took around 3 hours. Not as bad with a bit of practice.
