It’s fair to say that Toyota could have built the A90 Supra themselves without BMW. Maybe they should have done. But either way, we’ve ended up with a powerful, turbo six-cylinder RWD coupe that has awesome grip levels, good handling and arguably very cool styling. So should the Mk 5 Supra cop this much hate?
The Toyota Supra competes primarily with the BMW M2 and forthcoming Nissan Z. Does it stack up?

One small detail that a lot of people are probably not aware of is that during engine development of this engine at the BMW factory for the Supra, Toyota engineers pulled apart 5 of these engines and packaged them up and sent them back to HQ in Japan to be tested and improved. The Japanese engineers already knew where BMW engines tend to have problems so fixed these areas and got BMW to manufacture them in this format. I'm not sure if BMW has used these improvements in their own cars but if they haven't then the engines in the Supras are probably a little more reliable. I know this cause I was working at Toyota at the time.

I read about this not long ago, apparently during development everytime Toyota tested the BMW engine a different thing failed so they fixed it, so it’s pretty much got full Toyota reliability, it could be false though but honestly I believe it

I'm not upset that it's mostly BMW, I'm more upset about some of the styling choices, like the roof and the nose on the car. If it was a good looking car i might buy one even tho it doesnt have a manual. But no way i want one with no manual, no back seats and looking the way it does. I think the z4 looks better, and thats saying something

I had a Datsun 280zx in high school (1992) I recently bought a 2006 Nissan 350Z. I personally really like the Supra and the new Z. I live in Texas and my main issues are: 1) The roads are under constant construction. There are pot holes everywhere. 2) There are huge trucks EVERYWHERE...Raptors, RAM TRX F-150/250/350 most of which are lifted. Their headlights hit my mirrors and constantly blind me. It's horrible. I don't remember it being that bad, so trucks are getting bigger and I'm getting older. It's just something I think about. It seems like I live in a sports car hell hole and the elements are out to kill it.

@carboydorifutoparty3976

No one would buy it. People barely buy the homemade coupes they've had for years and also being pretty expensive for what they are so it'd make sense for them to just collab to make things cheaper since it'd be we'll too expensive for the cars they wanted the mk5 to go against if they where to do it themselves.

@@nessuno5403 here's the thing tho. Nissan and Honda might be in honor of making the nsx and R35,but. The R35 is 10+ years old and barely had any updates + they're still asking 100+k for it and its barely selling plus with the company being near bankrupt by this point. And it shows even more with them reusing parts or existing parts with the Z. In hondas case the nsx is a good car but they were barely able to sell it that even dropping its price didnt help. And in toyos case if the current mk5 is already just as fast if not faster than the RC and cheaper than the RCF then there is no reason to even use it especially with it weight more than the mk5 as well. If even the track editions get walked by the base mk5 while being 50-60k more that clearly says it would've been beyond stupid to make the RC the new mk5 if it can't even touch the mk5 stock and can't really do most of the stuff people have been doing with the mk5s since they came out. And even if toyo is a million dollar company they aren't gonna waste time on a dying market like the sportscar market is when they know pretty clearly that people aren't gonna buy the car when its gonna be expensive in the 1st place and Lexus made that very clear for them to see that.

@@nessuno5403 in yaris's case they already had a chassis for it and etc but didn't have a engine,plus it was funded by the sales + with the yaris being around for God knows how long now so that was easy to do. Plus the GR hypercar really isn't even going to be sold much at all and not even in close to numbers to a mk5 that it even costs over a mill just to get. And if the mk5 was a badly designed Z4 coupe it wouldn't have people going around tossing power at them left and right without a second thought,tracking them to death,wouldn't have people tossing them back to back at strips,and it surely wouldn't have a booming aftermarket like it does if it was worse than the Z4. Plus the Z4 is rarely present at all in the fields that the mk5s seen in so it's pretty far from being worse.

@@nessuno5403 yea mazdas making a I6 but that's for well more than 1 car. Toyo wasn't going to do the same. Toyo also wanted the mk5 to be out before 2020 hit and and we'll probably not even see mazdas i6 powered cars till 2023 so there was no way that was ever going to happen in such a short time. If anything,it was already said the mk5 would be around till 2025 or maybe 26. If anything,they already made their deal with bmw so they don't care as long as bmw gives them the parts,and even then toyos done more with the mk5 than bmw has with the Z4 that even before the end of 2021 they had the Z4 on the list of cars they'd be chopping off their line up even tho the new Z4 was barely 2 years old at that time but changed their minds. Even if BMW stops making the Z4 the mk5 will more than likely advance anyway since toyo had a deal with them plus BMW themselves didn't look like they had a care in the world about it since it came out and it shows since it doesn't even get the M\\\ treatment like the other cars in their line up to nor has it had any sort of updates since it came out.
@carboydorifutoparty3976
@carboydorifutoparty3976 2 жыл бұрын
@@nessuno5403 but how many cars are they going to put that i6 in exactly? And will it be in a price range that's right where its competition stands and not over. Mind you,toyos been using the same engines in multiple platforms for years now and them going i6 in platforms that aren't made for it is asking them to toss a ton a money down the drain knowing that they'd have no reason to even do that in the 1st place knowing they're trying to transition every car(including the whole Lexus line up)to go EV so there would be no reason at all to even make a from scratch i6 for them when they're already closing in on going full EV with everything. Plus,if the supra sucked that badly then the many comparisons that people make it going against the M2C wouldn't be brought up as much as it is now,especially with the Cayman. And other than them having their own advantages over the mk5,the mk5 itself still can hold its own against them while also being cheaper than both which is its main advantages over them. If they made the car on their own, who knows what it'd look like or would be as of now since Lexus can barely make a car that can even keep up with any of its own competition and that still heavily shows now that if even something like the RCF and RCF track can't keep up with its own competition and has more power than the mk5 and just barely beats it at points while also being more expensive then that clearly shows toyo would've made a disaster of making the mk5 themselves. Plus if it where that bad of a combo with the mk5 having the B58 then we'd clearly wouldn't see the sort of results people are having with them now,and yes the S58 is superior to the B58 but whos to say it won't get it in the long run? Toyos already said there would be a GRMN mk5 and for all we know it could either or be a S58 powered MK5 or supped up B58 so we'd have to wait and see. Now if the supra was a dissapointment then we'd clearly wouldn't see them doing as well as they currently are in the fields they've been thrown in. If anything,it can even be said that they really didn't need anything from toyo cause its not like its own community tried to do much at all with the other homemade rwd chassis they've had around for the past decade they could've used but practically brushed under the rug and acted like they didn't exist for sometime and are now yelling at them to either use parts,chassis,and etc when they clearly aren't using them in ways people are with the current mk5s other than dailies. I'll just say,even if it uses BMW parts its looking like mk5s are able to take a lot of abuse well more than anyones done with any of the rwd Lexus chassis have in the last 10 year's other than in the case If a daily driver and are even seeing good progress in all the fields they're tossed at so really. I don't see anything wrong with the mk5 as is even if it doesn't use parts from toyo since it looks like it's doing the exact same thing that made the 86 a success and is continuing to grow as time goes while all the other modern rwd toyos out now barely get looked at unless your a Lexus fan.

As an owner of a Supra, I still get goosebumps everytime I hop into mine. This car gets a lot of hate, for no good reason and mostly from people who have never driven one. I'm not too sure what expectations the public had for the current Supra in terms of performance. People are quick to forget that the JZA80 actually wasn't a supercar killer when it was released. It was more of a sporty GT, we often look back at old cars with rose-tinted glasses. It was heavy, and didn't handle anywhere near as well as the NSX or GTR. Oh, and it also came in automatic too. People like to omit that fact. Looks are subjective, and the Supra is definitely polarising. Those who love it, adore it and those that don't, hate it. Each to their own. I think the B58 and ZF combination is awesome. The motor is an absolute gem. It's been out on the market for years now, and hasn't developed a reputation for being a lemon yet, touch wood. N54's and N55's by this stage were notorious for their issues. People need to look beyond the badge. If you just want a nice comfortable sports car, like the JZA80 was, I'm telling you, the current generation Supra has those characteristics in spades. The performance numbers are a bonus. This thing tested by CarExpert, has lapped Queensland raceway only a few tenths off an AMG C63 and BMW M8, despite having significantly less power. It has lapped Laguna Seca faster than a BMW M2. It does sub 8-minutes at the Nurburgring. The chassis is potent. The Supra continues to be heavily underrated from many corners. But the numbers don't lie, and it's one of the best sports cars out there this side of 100k.

So it can't lap the Green Hell, quicker than a Civic type R or a Megane Trophy R. Nope, one problem with Supra is. Toyota went tight arse on all the touch points. Biggest problem, is the 400Z coming out. Sales numbers will confirm this.

@@brycem0 They might be quicker, but they don't look as nice and neither do they sound as good. Depends on what you value/want in a car really. At the end of the day it's your money, spend it on what you like, not what other people tell you they like. 400z looks like it'll be a cool car, even if it's mostly a rehashed 370z. I don't think it looks as nice as the Supra, but that's subjective.

The reason Toyota did the Yaris and Corolla GR by themselves is simple! They are based on economy cars that exists already therefore making it an easy gamble to make a performance variant. A Supra made by Toyota would have to be based on one their heavy RWD V6/V8 platforms from Lexus. To simply put it would be heavier and without an I6T if they used the Yaris/Corolla method. 4 door vehicles with space outsells 2 door coupes.

First review of the supra I have watched. Heard about the car a few ago while it was being developed but paid no attention to it. Not a fan of Toyota. The warranty is funny and a blessing, I'm just not sure I'd like to have the same mechanic how works on diesel land cruisers working on a rebadged BMW

I say this, as someone who recently had to send my A90 to the local Toyota dealer, because of a bugged infotainment. In terms of the correct tooling, it's sparse, so they'd have to wait for other dealers to send parts and tools over (kinda understandable, because of how rare an infotainment issue is, but anyways) But the main issue is knowledge to fix the issue. The problem straight up spiralled out of control, to a point where they considered replacing the whole thing. And in the end, it only needed a reflash and that's it. The interior looked like a crime scene for a sec (sad). But at least they found the issue, and were kind enough to cover it under warranty. And general maintenance is a-ok to be honest.

@@jasonlewis2990 you believing the car "looks better" does not justify the statement that the supra is "not even on the same page". The interior uses the BMW I-Drive system as well as the same panel parts and layout and digital display found in other BMW's. The Engine is BMW and the platform/Chassis is based off of the BMW Z4. This is more than "driving like a BMW". It practically uses every major component as well as design language from the Bavarian based giants. @djoetma 2 жыл бұрын
How much nonsense can one put in a single sentence. 1) The Corolla is a great car. The latest gen get's positive reviews all round in part because of it's dynamic driving 2) the tech is BMW, so it would be a Toyota Z4 in your simplistic words 3) They worked together on this. The basis was BMW tech,. Toyota quality control and some wishes Toyota had for this car like the 50-50 balance, meaning the Z4's wheelbase is different from what BMW intended for it. 4) They don't drive the same, the tuning was different. Toyota took the tech in a pretty early stage to their own development and they made a car out of it after their own insights and so did BMW. There are many reviews to be found where the Supra and Z4 are being compared. For your simple mind, you'd want to start with the Carwow dragrace. 5) The Z4 has a BMW badge and BMW tech, and it's probably a way more reliable car than BMW's in principle are today since Toyota's quality norms have no equal, so it's actually positive for BMW's name.

And even then there's been many ive seen throwing comparisons to how its able to stay with the M2C dispute the mk5 not having manuel or some that may have swapped from a M2C. Sure the Z4 isnt getting anywhere near the attention that the mk5 does but it's strongly showing that bmw has a pretty capable i6 and trans combination that its becoming well more noticeable than it ever was since the mk5 came out. Escpecially with them popping up with B58 mk5s popping up all to commonly in the drag/track more and the few of B58 mk5s rolling around in FD(especially fredric aasbos mk5 that literally wins podiums) practcally show that the mk5 all around is a pretty capable/usable chassis in nearly whatever field u throw it in.

@@chasingcars There are two reoccurring problems in your reviews in my opinion: 1. The fact you always review top-spec models despite most buyers purchasing mid-range models. 2. Well, I have a problem with your comment - at least a third of our reviews are not top specification, but keep in mind manufacturers don’t always add every specification to their fleets, plus we like to show available features rather than imagine them. But again, we clearly do not “always” review top spec. Secondly, we don’t conduct reliability surveys. You can easily find that information at JD Power, et al.
