Toyota Tacoma Homemade Jack Extension Test. Is my Toyota Tacoma jack extension dangerous and does it even work? Recently I made a jack extension for my lifted Tacoma. Since my truck is lifted, the OEM bottle jack was basically useless! Let's test my jack extension to see if it works or if it's dangerous! What do you think?

Rob the Jack goes to almost fell extension on the factory frame height. YMMV but when I popped that very tire and had to change I jacked under the lower A Arm frame. Not quite as long a lift. If anything to me your base makes the Jack more stable and gives it a bigger footprint too. That will help on a softer surface. So to me a good idea and plan.

Just an FYI: TOYOTA BOTTLE JACK are not cheap. They are robust and engineered with Worm and Pinion Gears. They are durable, robust and reliable. Much, much efficient than a hi lift jack. They can easily lift a 40 foot shipping container.

It would be great if you could use a high lift jack on a Tacoma, I haven’t figured out mine yet. Those bottle jacks are a pain in the ass if you get a flat in muddy conditions. Anybody have an idea on aftermarket parts where you can use a highlift jack?

Rob, no not any more dangerous than jacking the truck without the blocks in IMO. I am going to d the same with my lifted Tacoma. Thanks for doing this demo. If anything I wound add another board.

Did a similar set up with with 2x12 pressure treated stair tread board, applied oil deck stain.....combination of both treatments should prevent wood from drying and weakening over time.

The extra board (or two) would speed your time changing the tire. Also would cover you if you stop with the ground being reduced where the jack sits. Perhaps make a second set with bolts sticking out on one set that go into drilled holes in the second allowing it to lock into each other prohibiting slip. This would allow you to use only one set of needed. Great points brought up as always. Thanks

Shoulda wiggled the truck a bit once the tire cleared the floor to see if the jack would kick out. Is it dangerous? Of course it is - whenever you jack anything it's dangerous. But your blocks beat trying to find a suitable rock to use instead of a nice flat block!

@@RobMotive Ahh true - BUT in the real world you're gonna wiggle the truck a bit when you remove the wheel and again when you put the spare on. Not a lot, but some. That's a real test of how effective this type of jack is - block or no block.

Is it dangerous? Yes of course. Anytime you introduce blocks into a situation like this, you increase your danger. Is it an acceptable risks? I'd say so, but exercise extreme caution. I wasn't sure two boards would be enough, but now I know. I may swap my block out for one like yours. Two things I wish you had included in this video: First, the distance between the ground and frame when the tire came off the ground. Second, how much higher the stock jack would have lifted your truck.

I'd say the tire was around .75" off the ground in my test. Given that I have a 3" lift in the front (actually 3.5" by my measurements) and the boards account for 3", the difference in lifting height of the jack for stock is .5" 👍

If you ask me it's not so bad. I did similar with my old Liberty that had a 2" lift. The stock sisors jack could not lift it enough. I also used the block with a hydraulic bottle jack I carried for the camper and Jeep. It's was stable if you were on level solid ground.
