I have a 22 Tundra and I took it to Southern 441 Toyota in Palm Beach Florida for a 10,000 mile oil change and a tire rotation. My truck was finished with the service in less than 30 minutes. They brought my truck up to the front and my service advisor came and got me from waiting room and I said wow that was fast are you sure everything was done and he said everything was done and you're ready to go, we rotated tires, did the oil change and checked all fluids. So I signed the paperwork And before I got in my truck, I look at my tires and they are all in the same spot because I was smart enough to mark my tires so I said really they rotated my tires, then why are they all in the same exact spot, he says I'm sorry let me take it back so it can be taken care of. Then I say I bet you they didn't change my oil either. He says oh yes, they definitely did, I said ok just give me my truck back I don't trust this dealership. Now mind you, i'm a 59 year old woman! I went home checked my oil which was filthy and I went to home depot, bought wood and had it cut to 3 different lengths and made myself a set of ramps. I bought Mobil Synthetic Oil and a new Toyota oil filter and learned from KZbin how to change my own oil. I prep everything to get this job done so now I am under the truck with oil bucket, tools, gloves and find the oil drain plug and guess what came flowing out? The most dirty black oil I've ever seen, over 13:18 2 gallons of oil, way more than the 7.7 quarts that should be in there. I have pictures of the new oil Toyota put in my truck and What they did do was poured new oil over the old oil that was in there. They never even drained my old oil out! They offered me a free mini detail and said that they would have a talk with the kid that did the work at the dealership. So for anybody reading this when they tell you they're giving you 2 free oil changes and tire rotations. When you purchase your new tundra, don't fall for it!

Some Toyota engines had various engine design issues that could cause damage that could lead to spun bearings, however it's rare. I had a 2012 Tacoma that we sold in 2022 for $6000 less than we paid for it brand new. It had about 50k miles on it. Fortunately, I never had any issues with it. Im a Toyota tech and I’ve gone to many of the Toyota classes in the southeast division, these problems that are happening to these tundras are caused by a faulty timing chain being installed during the factory process. Basically what happens is that after a certain mileage those chains will explode in the engine damaging many parts inside . A few tundras were shipped with this faulty timing chain(when I mean few I mean a couple thousand compared to millions) what they did to your truck is replaced all the damaged parts and put an updated timing chain.

This is all happening because Toyota's quest in massive cost cutting for higher margins. Mike Sweers, the lead engineer was working on a totally different truck when Toyota asked him to stop and use the TNGA-F platform to save money. They also asked him to engineer it to cost 40 percent less than the last Tundra. Now add building it in the United States, and getting parts from American Suppliers and it adds up to a truck not any better than the big 3. The Japanese built LX600 has none of these engine issues. They only have the transmission programming recall updates

It's not easy for a Japanese car company to compete in the US market. These moves may be cost cutting but they're needed to keep a competitive advantage, it's not just greedy share holders. Toyota wouldn't exist if they didn't stay on their A game. Every action they take comes with risk. This could be something that's not even really in their control, like a supplier part containing contamination. We just don't know yet so it doesn't make sense to throw around accusations.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul 28 күн бұрын
@CyFi6 Toyota doesn't need to stay on their A game. People declare every vehicle they make inherently reliable because it's a Toyota and pay MSRP for them. They rarely ever face criticism or scrutiny for issues with their vehicles. The 3rd gen Tacoma had so many issues that Consumer Reports had no choice but to rate it least reliable midsize truck for years. Yet the public will default to "it's legendarily reliable". Even with all these engine failures, it won't stop Toyota from selling 130k Tundras this year because people will believe whatever Toyota says about the issue at face value. Not to mention Toyota is raking in record profits, does not have to deal with unionized assembly plants, and is actively moving production of components to Mexico or the southeast Asian Islands. They have everything going their way aside from the pressure of interest rates on US sales.

Because Lexus is considered a premium brand so Lexus is not gonna play this nickel and dime game that Toyota is playing. Toyota vehicles such as this tundra will get a short block only and pay the technician a few more labour hours to put it in versus Lexus replacing the entire short block, but also paying a little bit less labour to the technician doing the replacement, Lexus doing the right way. from what I understand it’s only the LS 500 from Lexus that are having the same main bearing issue correct?
@mnwolves180
@mnwolves180 Ай бұрын
@E39M5SPEED I am not sure what you are talking about. Toyota and Lexus both do not offer new long block replacements, just short blocks...... for now it is just the LS. But the LX600 and GX550 now have a 3.4 Twin Turbo engine variant. Just haven't been out long enough to see any major issues like the LS500 has had.

I’m Roger from Tennessee and I had bought a new 2022 Tundra in June of 22. The build date was 04/22. I sold my Tundra in January of this year because of an unusual thump on cold engine start as the engine lit off. This started when the engine had roughly 5,000 miles. The truck’s mileage when sold it was 7,842 miles. I had the dealer change my engine oil at 500 miles, 1,500 miles, 3,000 miles and 5,000 miles. This interval of oil changes is what I do on all of my new vehicles. I recommend that you change the oil and filter in your new short block engine at 500 miles because of machining debris left in the new engine block on build up. Left over metal particles will kill an engine early.

Way back in 1981 we bought our first Volvo 240. Included in the price was the first service at 1,000 miles. Engine, transmission, differential, cooling system, and brake flush and refill. It works. Same with our 90 240 that came off the road in December. At 400,000 miles it runs like new, down to the original automatic transmission. It was rot from 34 Ontario, Canada winters that killed it.

All the Japanese modern engines still have a special factory fill for initial run in however unlike the bad old days of the 70's and 80's, you will see their vintage 1,000 first service oil changes are no longer used. It's called OIL TECGHNOLOGY. If you read your owners manual it would have told you NOT to remove the factory oil for 10,000 miles. The initial base fill oils are made in Japan by Idemitsu & then the manufacturers order the additives they require. If you changed out the factory fill at 500 miles I'm not surprised there was an issue if you replaced running in oil with off the shelf synthetic. It would have removed all the assembly lube plus additives that Toyota spent so much engineering know how putting in there. You ain't too bright son. @@user-ic9jz4rn1d

Unfortunately I think all the manufacturers have apprehension on helping people when a lot of people, me included, change things on our trucks and expect everything to be fine. I know you said you didn’t do anything to it but wonder if the previous owner did something? I have a 23 Tundra so hoping I will not fall into the same category as you. Some people say it’s a common problem but if that was true I would expect more then 20% of the trucks having an issue and from what I’ve heard it’s well less then 1%. I currently own a 2023 trd pro. I bought it used at 96 miles from a gmc dealer in California. I love the power and comfort on and off road. However, at 3800 miles check engine lights came on indicating "hybrid system malfunction" I drove it to the dealer, they diagnosed it and told me anti freeze got into one the cylinders. As a result, the driver side head was worked on. It took 2 weeks to get it done. Now I'm at 14,500 miles, it's trouble free and running strong. Unfortunately, with this incident I question long term reliability. Although I really love the trd pro I don't know if I want to keep it pass 60k miles🙏🤞

This is becoming a common problem, mine had 30k when it send the rod through the block, at first they thought it was just a short block replacement but after seeing metal in the oil they decided to replace everything including turbos, the hold thing took about 3 months, I was placed into a new 1794 while the work was being done but I definitely missed my truck and Toyota was not trying to help in anyway when it came to the monthly payments, they even try to lemon it but charge me a usage fee. Well I’ll see where this goes, so far so good, it’s been almost a year since and no problems so far…

This is why I sold all my new trucks and cars. New is absolute junk. Run away. Especially when the “genius engineers” think we need small engines with turbos. Turbos increase stress and strain. There is no replacement for good old school,displacement. I own 2 old truck both from 1984. A Dodge and a Chevy army truck. Never had any issues with the old ones. Simple basic and they work. Not with modern. Modern is designed to fail, they are designed to screw over the customer. Old ones are easier to work on, cheaper to repair, and with run a lot longer. Old is way way more reliable than new. Trucks became unreliable when the did away with carburetors and distributors. Run far away from turbo charged engines. They are extremely unreliable. I am a mechanic so I’m not a random person bashing on new. I have worked on these modern ones and old ones. And old ones are a lot better.

All new car manufacturers used to make their own vehicle parts for their lineup’s but now they all use subcontractors to make the parts as cheap as possible. A Nissan engineer told me that even flat washers are priced at $.001 of a penny per washer 😳. Profit margin is king to the manufacturer’s. Now consider this too that the American EPA is the reason that the Toyota V-8 engine is no longer made for the Tundra and the new 2024 Tacoma only has one four cylinder turbo charged engine available for it. Every new vehicle model year sold in the U.S. requires that the manufacturers has to improve fuel economy to EPA standards. This means that to get the fuel economy required, the vehicles become lighter in weight and cheaper by thinner bodywork panels, thinner frame and suspension components.

Toyota should be let off for this being an early model. They had years to get this engine right. Toyota quality is slipping lately and they're obviously cutting corners to cheapen stuff up. That's why they use the same platform to make both a midsize truck and a fullsize truck. It's why they refused to just send a new crate engine and instead tell you that your brand new truck with 25k miles isn't getting a new engine but an engine rebuilt by a random guy at a dealer.

Well my 2022 trd pro had a oil leak when it was very cold out, -40c and the dealer said it bypass the filter and dump it on the skid plate. One dealership say it only the none hybrid have this problem, so far I haven't heard of any in Canada yet. But I have the same engine in my 2021 is350.

Sorry for what you're going through. Turbo-undersized engine puts too much pressure on the crankshaft bearings. For people who says there were camshaft and gasket issues in the early 2nd gen Tundras, yeah but camshaft ain't the component pushing a 7k lb truck.

I have been researching this FOREVER! I want to know if this is solved as well. I am ready to buy once I get my VA backpay and I will NOT until this is fixed. I love the new tundra look and I really like the CC, MTS and rear locker, but wont get something that is known to fail. Like you said, the V8 had NONE of these issues. Toyota what is going on!? Jim, would you please make a video of the motor update if you find that they have solved this issue? 🙏

I've been a Yoda guy since '87. Bummed about the quality on the newer trucks. My 5th truck a '21 SR5, has a less than desirable built quality in comparison to earlier trucks. It does seem like quality is going down with all brands and even airplanes are falling apart mid air.

I will say this year has a butt ugly front end look. And YES, no v6 turbo/turbos for me. (Happy owner 2015 sr tundra). Still a cheap looking interior(in mine). Plastics scratch and get marked up too easy .p.s. im 66 years old and careful.

This is what happens when you buy a vehicle that is brand new from the bottom up especially the engine. If I were you, I wouldn’t think of this is a negative you’ve got a brand new engine, but they’re going to follow and treat you like a king.

I really don't see this as Toyota "making it right". They could have sent an entire crate engine, fresh from the factory to fix this truck. Instead they're telling guys that paid $60k+ for a brand new Tundra with 25k miles that their broken engine is going to be rebuilt by some random guy at the dealer using new and old parts. Toyota is making record profits. If they wanted to really make it right and put a new factory fresh engine in there, they could have afforded it.

And this is why, ladies and gentlemen, I did not wait to buy a new 6th gen 4Runner when they came out, I bought a '23 Limited instead. I did not want a turbo or an 8 speed transmission which there is a recall on them as well. If I was to buy anything like this, Toyota would have been my 1st choice but it seems they are having problems just like everybody else. Pushing engines and transmissions to make more power than they were originally designed for is not good for reliability, so, here we are. This is why a bought a tried and true new 10 year old low tech truck. I keep my vehicles at least 10 years and wanted one that would go 200K+ miles and not have to worry about it.
