Here is a great starter tool kit amzn.to/3JWU7iH
Watch Marc replace a clutch kit on this Toyota Yaris.
replacing a clutch isn't as daunting as you might think.
remove the battery and begin stripping down everything that is attached to the gearbox.
this includes wiring looms, pipes, gear selectors, starter motor, electrical multiplugs and the slave cylinder.
slave cylinders can differ in design, this one however is mounted outside the gearbox ( the easier design ) this means we can detach it without introducing air into the system. this means we dont have to bleed the clutch fluid later on as we are able to just move it to one side.
you can remove bell housing bolts but make sure to keep them organised, some are different sizes and lengths so it pays off to be organised here.
i always leave one bolt in the bell housing until it is ready for removal.
once everything has been detached from the gearbox, drain the gear oil and remove the driveshafts. support the engine and remove the rear stabiliser bush, when you do this the engine will tilt slightly. making sure your engine support is fitted properly will soften the force of this tilt.
again, once you are happy your engine support is adequate, remove the gearbox mounts and then with the transmission supported (via T/jack or your own strength) loosen the last remaining bolt and remove the gearbox.
while the gearbox is on the bench its a good opportunity to clean it up and swap out the thrust bearing.
using a screw driver to lock the flywheel in place, you can undo the clutch plates, clean the friction surface before fitting the new clutch.
Always refer to your Tech data and procedure manuals on how to correctly install and torque these plates.
when you're happy, re fit in the reverse order in which it was removed.
don't forget to re fill the gearbox with gear oil (commonly 75w 90)
Every wheel that is removed must be properly torqued before you test drive.
i hope you enjoyed this video!
i hope this helped if you were looking on carrying out this job yourself.

@@scottyfroula4818 being brutally honest. Got as far as splitting the box from the engine and couldnt clear the rear box mount (jap built 1.3) to get it out. After 3 hours of swearing, cursing abd almost breaking a finger it went back to together and off to the garage. Was not a happy chappy, but i would give it another go if i could get the car a but higher and such i would give it another go if i needed to and didnt have a single day to do it in.

Hi Marc. Thanks for doing the video. I successfully managed to change my first clutch on my 2002 Yaris using jack stands. I nealy gave up when I couldnt get the gear box to line on as i hadnt centered the clutch plate properly. After the car wasnt running properly, problem sorted. Vacuum pipe for emission control had come off when engine was tilted. Running good now. Cheers.

@@MTMMotorServices : Glad to see I wasn't the only one using this trick. :-) I had started doing this when I worked part-time in a motorcycle workshop. Often, it was necessary to wait for the delivery of the parts to reassemble and it was my colleague who had to finish my work. Or, I who had to finish his. To simplify his work, I made a drawing of the fairing of the motorcycle and drove in the screws. As I practice mechanics less now, I continue to do so. It's all the more valuable as I work on more diversified things where I haven't acquired the automatisms of yesteryear. Thanks for your video. It's very clear. If I can make a suggestion, it would be to add the dimensions of each tool used. It would be reassuring for an amateur with little equipment to be able to check that he has all the tools necessary to start the job.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. I’ve just finished doing the clutch on my daughter’s 2003 Yaris. ( On my back. On the garage floor.) It was great to have you talk us through the task. One thing I would stress though is just how difficult it can be to remove the driveshafts! The driver side is not too bad, but the near side was a pig to do as it’s really difficult to get something behind the inner cv joint to tap it out. I ended up actually pulling the inner CV joint apart by pulling too hard on the driveshaft to try to remove it. Apart from the driveshafts and the rear gearbox mounting, the job isn’t too bad. It took me about 12hours in total working alone. Thanks again!!

Although that is also my complaint when watching videos on KZbin. In this case.. it did actually come out nicely 😅 But that being said, i understand why people cut out the additional 45 mins or more of extra grief they get from seized parts. If there is a problem I get with certain parts of jobs, I will explain any issues I get but most of the time.. if something is stuck, you've just got to persevere.

Great well made vid. I have bit of a phobia about disturbing wheel bearings. Could it be possible to remove steering rod end from NS hub and just pull NS shaft out of box, pushing to one side like other one? Also, OTT maybe but poss a blast of air to remove all crap before pulling shaft our of box, which might fall onto shaft or into box? Rubber glove on end of shaft Then duct tape over box entries to stop anything getting in box while worked on? Hope that helps, I have a bit of prob with my Yaris - clutch really strong when engine cold, when hot and accelerating in 2 or 3 gear revs pick up and stay steady at 3k ish, just like an automatic kicks down. Is this a prob with variable timing or clutch? Thanks

Hard to believe that you would take all that apart and not remove the flywheel and replace the rear engine main seal since it's the easiest time to do it. I also noticed that you didn't remove the clutch fork and inspect the pivot bolt for wear and put a dab of grease on it to keep things smoothly. From experience, I know it's easier to do it right rather than having to take all that off again just because I cut some corners. Thanks

Run a thinner fluid in the gearbox. The factory Toyota gear oil isnt that great. I went from 75w90 to 75w80 and the lighter fluid provides a pretty smooth shift. A slave cylinder would be more at fault if the clutch pedal was sinking too low to the floor and sticking coming back up.

Some kits (very rarely) come with disposable plastic alignment tools for fitment. I would reccomend buying a tool. Cheers.
