always get the head tested for valve leaks, i just did one recently and 12/16 valves were leaking bad. my machinist said these heads normally cannot be skimmed without some kind of special heating machine or something, but my head did not require any skimming from warpage

The coolant leaking creates a 'steam cleaning' effect, creating clean spots in the piston and especially the exhaust port area in the exhaust header point.

This job is turning out great. You did a great job filming. Using the abrasive pad cleans things right up. I like the way you used that old piece. It's broke in. I used Scotch Brite pad for years working on commercial aircraft. Trying to figure out how the head gasket failed. The owned should use quality fuel to keep that carbon from building up. Again great video.

Perhaps the problem with Prius engines is the fact they are off till you need to pick up speed suddenly and so the engine has to go from being shut off to high rpm in mere seconds. I've always been told that first you start the engine, give it a few seconds for the oil to move up and then you drive off at moderate speeds till it warms up. A hybrid engine does not have that luxury.

I’ve been driving prius for over 10 years now and currently have the current Gen.4 model and always wondered this, but I think oil pressure is established before the computer injects fuel and produces a spark?

This electric motor in the Prius has the ability to spin the motor before the ignition is activate Therefore there is no need to wait for oil pressure before going into high RPM like you might do with a conventional motor. The motor is already spinning from the electric motor and building oil pressure before the spark plugs even begin firing. The ECU is smart enough to know when the motor is in the right position and condition to begin the ignition system to start making power. This in part is why you don’t feel a sudden shock when requesting engine power with the skinny pedal

Have you ever looked at an original head gasket versus the replacement Toyota came up with? The original was terribly designed. That little thin strip of black sealer around the passage areas is too weak. The replacement gasket has one continuous layer of sealant across entire gasket. No ridges and valleys. Edit… he shows the revised gasket in the vid

I was also under the impression though...that even in the Chilton and other manuals it says that Toyota recommends not to take anything off the head no matter what. They recommend that if it's bad enough and you can't just put a new gasket on it as well as to make sure its flat withtin spec that you should get another head...is that just rumor or something? Because others I've seen that do this repair have stated the same as you to always always always send it to the shop just to always make sure it's good don't take chances

So it looks like the gasket is rubber coated aluminum, and the rubber broke down and started leaking. So why don’t they make the gasket out of aluminum or copper or a high temp gasket like hydraulic cylinders use, some thing that’s not going to deteriorate and start leaking??

Hi Peter, maybee you can help me too? We have a Rav4 2001 with 1 AZ-FE. It has ~90.000miles on it. I have a issue withe the vvt-i. OBD says P1349. Ah yeah the OCV... i changed it 3 tirmes with different new (o.k. not stock ones). After ereasing failure it´s comming back, but later not right after start, after several miles/days. Motor is running smooth nothing loud or anything. So opend valv cover and checked timing - also fine. Changed Chain tensioner (was leaky) nothing better. Did the activation test on the ocv when idling, motor stalls, so vvti system o.k. Puh what else can cause the (somtimes intermittend) P1349 error? Oil changs we did, it´s not perfect but not dirty. Changed camshaft sensor - same. is there a chance to log data with techstream to see when and maybee why it happens? Thanks Thorsten - Germany

Do you service your systems on time according to schedule? Sounds like you do. Especially coolant. Most people don't and let the system go low or become corrosive and eat itself out. Why do something you don't need? Unless you were going to drive through the Sahara without anyone around to tow you to a shop, I wouldn't. Unless you've overheated the engine, save your money. Follow the maintenance schedule as instructed. If it makes you feep better you can do two things. One pressure test the cooling system to see if it leaks or loses pressure. That can mean impending failure. Next time you have the heads exposed like in a valve cover job, have them retorque the head bolts. And three, if you have bad luck, research where some GOOD mechanics are on your route.. and not the stealersaop

I'm just beginning to have an issue with my 2010 at 145K. My question is, what is the long-term success rate of the replacement head gasket? I don't really have a mechanic locally I'd trust to do it, and I don't want to get it done only to have the same issue in a year or two. My Prius is otherwise pretty much bullet-proof. I'd get it fixed if I knew I'd get another 100K out of the thing.

Not a whole lot, old age catches up with everything. But most people don't change their coolant at regular intervals, so there's that. And also avoid engine overheating at all costs - it can warp the head and/or 'cook' the gasket.

@@davidfalgout7304 agreement with what Matt said but also if you ever overheat, you have a secondary radiator in your car with a powerful fan. You might have guessed already by the time you read this. But it's your heater core. Not only are you sucking more hot air from your system by putting on max heat and turning on the fan to high, the two fans on the actual radiator kick on as well by default if they're not on already. People don't watch their temp gages like race drivers do. And they don't have to as much as they do but do it more than most do especially on a third gen Prius. Yes the inside of your car will get hot and fast. But you have windows that roll down and also you don't have to aim the vents at your face. They point other places too. Like away from your body.

This problem cannot be prevented. This is either a design and/or a manufacturing error. Toyota should pay unless their cool with their engines blowing head gaskets at 160,000 miles. Were talking engines that have never overheated, no warped head. Some say stretched head bolts from on/off heat cycles occurring so often. One mechanic said when he removed the head bolts they squeak making him wonder if the threads were lubed. If they threads are not lubed, an incorrect torque could happen. Some say the gasket itself wears out from the heat cycles. Mine blew at number 2.

It’s because, with being a hybrid, it turns on and off all the time so the engine heats up and cools over and over, so 200k on a hybrid is like 400k on a regular engine. It’s just an issue from the gasket expansion and contraction so many times.
