Those charcoal canisters are an Achilles heel for reliability of Corollas. My gf had a 2012 with the same issue. To anyone with this problem get an OEM replacement to save yourself some headache no matter what the extra cost is. Thanks for the video!

I think this is the canister that they speak of filling up with gas if you keep capping your gas tank extremely full. I think it is overfilling this thing with actual gas that causes the failure many times.
@RoldanRR002 жыл бұрын
@@kramnull8962 That may cause it, but it cannot account for every failure. Think about all the other models out there where it doesn't happen, even other Toyotas. Something is going on specifically with the Corolla.

My gf’s 07 rav4 limited kept getting these codes, so i removed the cannister/pump assembly and hung it upside down overnight and drained the mix of gas & water. Reinstalled the next day. Itd be good for a while then the codes would cone back. The price of the🎉 new pump assembly through the dealership service dept was around $8-900. Ouch! Toyota’s website doesnt let you just buy the cannister or pump that you may need individually, and they dont even list the individual pump or charcoal can part numbers printed on the side. The only place you can find them is in the exploded view drawings/pictures that show how the assembly fits together. It’s almost as if....they dont want you to know they exist? Now, why would the nice people who made your car NOT want you to look at those individual part numbers? Because if you did, you might realize they use that exact same pump and can in other vehicles that have an assembly that costs MUCH MUCH less. Same parts w identical part numbers bolted to a different bracket. That metal bracket makes it a “different” assembly with a different part number. Toyota won’t let you cross reference which of their other cars use those same parts on their website☹️ ...but ebay sure does 🤫 I was able to find out which other cars had the same pump and can, then searched the prices of those vapor assemblies on the Toyota parts website and found they were ALL different prices. We didnt need a new bracket, so i ordered the cheapest one (from an 06 or 7 Scion tC, i think...) Suddenly the price for a brand new genuine Toyota OEM vapor pump assembly dropped from over $800 down to arou;d $225 for the same pump and can. Picked up the part the next morning, took it home, verified part #s were identical, unbolted the bracket, and bolted on hers, installed it, cleared the codes and more than 2 years later, they havent returned. I saved the old charcoal can, and let it completely dry out. If the new one ever fills up w liquid again, I’ll swap cans and let the new one drain & dry out. Takes 15 mins.

I think the charcoal is supposed to absorb the gasoline vapor, which then periodically gets sent into the engine intake manifold to be burned. Decades ago, the vapor from the evaporating gasoline just escaped into the air. In big cities with poor air circulation for days at a time , like Los Angeles, it added up to smog. It's not good to inhale that for year after year. If liquid gas gets inside the canister from overfilling the gas tank, or some other reason, I think it will mess it up, but am not certain of that. The electric controlled valve inside it is what probably fails, but who knows? I do know that you are not supposed to fill your tank up until the gasoline is running out of the filler neck. I was watching one of the first episodes of, The Rockford Files. They were at some beautiful modern home up in the Hollywood Hills. Looking out over the pool you could see a brownish layer of pollution covering the city below. It was bad back then, before catalytic converters were created to reduce the unburned hydrocarbons coming out of those millions of vehicles.

I just smog my car today so is not an emergency for me to fix this right now I got 2 years before next smog check and the car is running perfectly fine.

After replacing my canister, now I just fill up 10 gallons at a time after the low fuel light comes on. That way I won't accidentally overfill it and get gas in the canister. Plus, it makes math easy when figuring out tank mpg's. 10 gallons / 290 miles traveled on the trip until the low fuel light comes back on = 29 MPG :-)

Is Corolla 2010 air condition system repairable??? Several shops told me to replace its compressor with one used in earlier 9th gen Corollas. It doesn't cool the vehicle properly. The shop said compressor is gone and it's a common problem in 10th gen Corollas, so i have to install a compressor from earlier 9th gen.

Yeah 10th gens had bad compressors. Father in law paid $1200 @ dealer. Can 9th generation ac compressor be used instead? Love to know the answer to that too.
@chasingexcellence93362 жыл бұрын
@@davidg5704 yes all shops recommend a new or used 9th gen compressor as replacement. The 9th gen is a clutch compressor which may increase fuel consumption but it's proven and works compared to 10th gen compressors which is electric but not reliable and repairable. They designed it so to decrease fuel consumption but it has proven problematic compared to clutch compressor of the previous gen. It's very common where i live to replace it with 9th gen. In fact it's the only proven solution.

I have a 2009 Tundra 5.7L in my shop today with the same exact codes. There is a TSB for that canister, as well, but it also wants a new filler neck installed along with a new canister filter. The evap system has been revised and the filter is no longer used so you have to buy a new vapor hose for between the canister and the filler neck. With tax, just for parts, it's nearly $1250 for my customer. Fortunately, it's less than an hour to change it all but that's insane. The aftermarket canister assemblies are nearly the same money so no need to bother with them. The canister might be fine and you might be able to get away with just changing the leak detection pump but one has to wonder why the LDP failed. It could be from the canister coming apart internally so there's no way to guarantee the work without doing it all. Ouch.
