Peter would make a really good automotive repair instructor at any trades school. This can be a really good job as current mechanics grow older. More teaching and instruction, less hands-on labor. The perfect job for older mechanics.

The other things that you should: Replace and seal the cam caps. Clean and seal the half moons with some Toyota FIPG. Replace the valve cover bolt washers. Make sure not to skip replacing those spark plug tube seals. Replace the manifold gaskets. Replace the PVC valve. Clean the throttle body while it’s apart. Check the fuel injectors and other wires and hoses while you have the manifold off. Scott P.S. You have a good mentor helping you. You got this Isaac.

Nice list! I'd only add cleaning the MAF and IAC along with the tbody for a complete air intake job along with a new air filter (if not already done).

Replacing the seals is a time consuming job but one I need to do as well. It would be allot to ask for a how to video but it would be a very welcome one. You could always split the video up to make a multipart series. Thanks for the videos!

I suspect they are on the right track to fixing the problem. Plus, the valve cover gasket and seals need to be replaced anyway. I also hope they film this and leave part numbers in the description as I have a 3.4 valve gasket job I need to tackle. Peter, you are a blessing my friend!

I had the same issue I got replaced gasket and seals but problem came back. My mechanic did a compression test and one of the cylinder did not passed and they determinate it was the engine cylinder block.

I agree and this is something to check when purchasing a older used vehicle. This is also a good negotiation tool when purchasing from an owner. Pull out the spark plugs wires and look for oil in the tubs and on the boot. Really appreciate you passing you thought process on to the next generation!!

Hey Peter, since you are going to pull the valve cover you might as well replace the pcv valve and bushing. Those bushings are so old and brittle that when you go to pull it off the bushing breaks and falls in the engine. So, best to replace the bushing and pcv valve while you are in there.

This is a great opportunity for Isaac to really see his motor. Time to tend all the rubber bits with a critical eye anyway. No worries, it will be worth the time to have your engine in order, Isaac. Go for it! You will improve it. I drove my first 4runner for 17 years. "Hands on" works.

That’s pretty nice Petr that you’re teaching him as well as fixing the car. To own a vehicle like this you need to be able to troubleshoot. He should have at least a basic code reader. He could have looked up the code himself. He also could have looked at the wires and found the loose one and the oil. First thing to do is always look at things very closely and carefully.

i know i might get a negative response from other posters but if we are going to start taking apart the engine due to bad seals and gaskets on this aging 4runner i would try to determine if head gaskets were ever replaced. if not i would go ahead and do the full job and replace all the gaskets all around using highest quality gaskets toyota labeled, or oem equivalent, at once and consider machining the heads as well. great channel and videos btw…

Nice Truck! The seal between the valve cover and the spark plug tube are compressed when the valve cover is tightened. I would give the valve cover a tightening, it may stop or slow down the leak. I would then wipe out all the oil from the spark plug tubes. Next I would check for restrictions/clogs in the PVC circuit as it may be causing excessive internal engine pressure. I would wash the spark plug wires and inspect them for cracks. They really shouldn't short out in oil since they are insulated and seal tight on the spark plug's insulator. However the seal May be compromised by sitting in oil getting softer, turning to goo and then leak. This failure of the seal will cause the oil to migrate up the spark plugs insulator to the spark plug wire's connection. This may cause a short to ground depending how conductive the oil is. I'm sure there is some resistance of the oil which may become more conductive as it picks up metallic residue as it ages. Consider if you spend an hour cleaning up the wires @ $120 dollars an hour all you will have in the end is some cleaned old wires. With all the above cleaned and reassembled you should be able to drive awhile. I'm not going to tell where you should do this, but I will tell you to do it. Vacuum all the leaves behind the rear engine compartment seal. Inspect this seal it must be working. It keeps oily air off the windshield and from going into your fresh air intake. Grab at least two cans of Foamy Engine Degreaser. Read and understand the instructions on the back of the can. Be careful where you spray this stuff mainly directly in the alternator. I would remove the Air Filter Housing and it's hose to the Throttle Body. I would shove rags in the throttle body inlet and seal it with plastic wrap, tape, and or Rubber band. I would remove the fuse box cover, fold up a rag and place it on top of the fuses with a bit of plastic wrap then replace the cover. Next get a look at all the nasty bits of your engine. Spray the engine cleaner in the hardest to get to places first. There is a siphon tube in the can that may blow air. Turn the spray nozzle on the can to compensate. Continue spraying all the Nooks and Crannies. Let the stuff sit and not drip to the ground or you are just wasting the degreaser. Have a rag handy. A lot of dirt won't come off unless you touch it. You can spray the underneath of the hood and wipe with the rag to clean it. If you have hood insulation you can liberally soak it but don't blast it. You will have to leave the hood open till it drains the water out of it. Continue cleaning the engine, steering rods and compartment. Slow and easy. Throw down some cardboard and lay down on it to get to your Undercar's bits and pieces. After the time stated in the degreaser's instructions give the engine a rinse. Remembering the nooks and crannies. Let everything drip dry. No one ever cleans here and it is where body cancer will start. Wet leaves get trapped here and rust out the fender. Open the driver's door. at the bottom of the door jam where the fender attaches to the body should be sealed off with a soft plastic cover. This is how my Tundra is and I suspect your truck will be similar. You should be able to fashion a hook out of wire to pull the bottom of the cover out. Inspect this cavity for leaves. Pull out as many leaves as you can with your hook. Next blast some water up in there. These leaves come from up and over the fender well but mostly from the windshield drain cover where the wipers attach. Hosing the windshield will flush this cavity behind the fender cover. There might be people that comment OMG Don't ever get your engine wet. Your engine gets wet every time you drive in the rain. Sure there might be areas that are drip proofed like the fuse box but it isn't water tight, it even drains. Motorcycle engines get wet all the time especially dirt bikes. The benefits of a clean engine are many one of them being fire. An engine is metal and won't catch on fire unless you drive into a volcano. It's all the stuff on top of the engine that burns, stuff like oily grunge. Your mechanic will love you for having such a clean engine. Respecting your car makes your friends respect your car. Drive a bucket they will treat it as one. Keep the inside windows clean, I hate seeing kids fingerprints all over the glass. Clean in between the bumps behind the steering wheel, that's where the previous owner's finger sweat and grime builds up, nasty. Use Rain-x, I use the windshield cleaner version since my truck is too high. Don't whomp your truck, she's and old girl and deserves respect.

Timing belt, timing belt, timing belt. While you're at it do the water pump and thermostat. You don't want to be driving down the road and that belt snap, while it's a non-interfering belt, you don't want to have to call a tow and be stuck. Make that 4runner healthy again! Take care of that 3.4 and she will take care of you for many many miles.

I had 2004 Celica got same code, the number four injector leaked up Inside the connector shorted to the ecu. I was getting power to the injector but no pulse. I test at the ecu for injector pulse not present, then tested continuity of injector wiring. Had to replace injector and ecu. Luckily the car is so old the ecu or key doesn't need programming. Cost for me to fix $153.
