As a former 2002 C5 vert owner of 14-years, I really enjoyed your analysis. I found it very informative, factual and balanced. My only quibble is that the oil consumption issues were resolved by GM in time for the 2002 model year, so I sort of felt like it should have been a tie between '02 and '03 for the "best" C5 model year. When i sold mine, I had put about 110k glorious miles on it. No garage queens allowed around here. Sold it for a very fair $11k and the new owner was thrilled. The original 5-layer top was still in excellent condition as was the rest of the car that had been garaged and well maintained. I always felt like I had a race car in my garage.

Hey, about a year ago I bought a 1998 C5 with 80k miles on it. (I got it for less than $9k!!!). I had a honda S2000 which you may know have been going up in value like crazy. I sold the honda and got the vette because I wanted to REALLY learn about cars. I had never done anything other than basic fluid changes in my life and the LS platform is cheap and easy to get parts for and learn about. The money I got from the honda came a long way with being able to mod the vette. It still took MONTHS of research but I put a cam in, LS7 lifters (and full valve train overhaul), vararam intake, full exhaust, replaced every pump, and rebuilt mostly every system in the front end of the car etc. I did it mostly for reliability sake as I want to go to the track and really put it through it's paces and the idea of dropping a valve due to my 23 year old valve springs was concerning me. ANYWAY I always see you responding to people's comments saying thanks for taking the time to comment when you don't have anything to really say back. You and other C5 youtubers like BeezyBuilds and Chris have given me a wealth of knowledge and I would finally like to say thank you. Everything I have done would not have been possible without you guys as the forums only go so far or aren't accurate. I've reached out and DM BeezyBuilds fairly regularly as he was more into road circuit track stuff like I want to be (even though he has a civic now haha) so now is your turn. So again thank you for getting my car off jack stands after 8 months and getting my wife off my back. (She is very supportive, but sharing a car for 8 months was getting OLD haha).

I've wanted a Corvette since I was 5 years old and, after searching for 7 years, I finally bought mine for my 40th bday! It's not the year that I initially wanted, it's not the color (exterior) that I wanted, heck, it's not even the year or generation (C4, '96) that I had been searching for. And on top of all of that, I bought it from a sleazy dealer that was 1200 miles away without spending a few bucks and having the "Ghost" inspected. Big mistake:/ Fortunately, my 48k '97 was pretty clean and wasn't delivered with any catastrophic issues- although the dealer failed to disclose that the a/c didn't work(which I have yet to diagnose) and the glass top had worn off tinting (had a body color top included that looks much better anyway). I just replaced the crankshaft pulley after putting about 5k miles on it, and I've spent roughly another 4 grand on Speedline Z06 wheels and new tires, Z51 shocks and heavy duty sways and endlinks, plus a few cosmetic upgrades etc. Now, that is way more than I had anticipated spending in my first year of ownership. Definitely slowing down on spending, but I still have plans for another 4 or 5 grand worth of bolt-ons and upgrades. None of that really includes items that will deliver bigger power gains either- just getting the car dialed in and sorted out to where it's going to be relatively competent in all areas. It's all worth it. It's all worth waiting 35 years for my used dream car. I'm okay with that.

I have a 2004 base Commemorative. Actually, the mag ride shock control can be removed through a very specific process which requires a TECH 2 programmer. The suspension control module is now disconnected, and the body control module has the F55 option removed. No more mag shocks, no simulators, with no error codes. I did not know the fuel filter and regulator is in one of the tanks. Aggh. I recently bought a fuel filter intending to change it. I guess that will wait.
@Toys4Life2 жыл бұрын
Did you actually have it programmed out, cuz my understanding through credible sources is that the '04s were different and you're screwed. But if you've actually had it done and yours is in fact an '04, I'm all ears!
@ronrange39032 жыл бұрын
@@Toys4Life Mine is indeed an '04, built in 11/2003. I am not 100% sure what was actually done as I took it to a dealer for them to program it out since I did not have access to a GM TECH 2 programmer. BTW I had this done in August 2015, so it's been awhile. I did print out the procedure highlighted in the Corvette Forum article "Deprograming F55 Suspension" and provided that to the service writer in case they could use it. The article mentions it only works for the '03 and '04 years (F55) since the prior years were different (F45). The article did mention simulators would not work on the '04 so the '04 must be different in some way as you mentioned. This is what I did. I replaced the shocks which caused shock error codes as expected. I took the car to the dealer. When I picked up the car, the suspension module in the back of the car was unplugged as I expected, and there were no more error codes. I can only assume it is programmed out of the body control module since I am guessing that there would be a communication error with the suspension module if it weren't programmed out. As I understand it, if one were to simply turn off the F55 in the body control module without following something like the deprogramming sequence the communications would rediscover the suspension module and turn the F55 feature back on therefore producing shock error codes. I hope this pile of information helps in some way. I'm not suggesting you change your chart, but I wanted to make you aware that I believe it can be done. And no I'm not mad you didn't pick my year. It took time and research to convince myself it would work before I bit the bullet and de-magnetized it. I liked the mag shocks, but I didn't want any future issues that you highlighted, and I only used the sport mode anyway.

I have done a lot of researching on the whole 1997 low low production. It seems that the idea of first year ls1 bugs didn’t have anything to do with it. At the time, the LS1 was considered the best of the best. The 97’ model year got started very very late in production. The demand however was through the roof. As is the case in anything brand new. Rather than play catch up. They stopped at 9700 and started producing 98’s to get a jump on production and have plenty right off the bat for 1998!

@@ronsteitz4535 I agree, you should never buy a C5 Corvette with a 4-speed, because that would be the automatic! The manual is a 6-speed. It's quicker, less maintenance, gets better fuel economy, is more fun, and can handle more power without blowing! I do agree to not buy a 'modified' car as it's probably been beat on, but I do believe in modifying it myself (and taking care of it). But having owned 3 Vettes- 2 manuals and 1 auto, I'd only own manual Corvettes in the future. Maybe an exception for the C8, as it only comes as a dual-clutch automatic (already having issues, btw).

Thank you for the kind words, I think the EB CM failure in the '01 and newer models is definitely just from heat cycling, it causes the solder joints to break which can be easily fixed usually. Not quite sure about the earlier models nor am I sure which one has a higher failure rate, only that the later years are easier to fix or replace.

My 2003 AE has the FFS RPO Code which means that the fuel regulator and filter are attached to the fuel pump inside the tank. I am starting a savings account for shocks.
@Toys4Life2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is you can do the delete on the 2003, but not the 2004. You must have a late year 2003 to have that fuel filter in the tank... I think they switched it like the last month or two of production. I love those shocks too, but I hate it when they get crazy in price!

Well, as luck would have it, I ordered an 03 coup in 2002. I’ve had it ever since. It’s a one owner electron blue with a six speed manual transmission. If your running a vet at 3000+ rpm for long periods of time, you might need to shift the transmission to a higher gear because they pull 1700 rpm at 75 mph in 6th gear. I ordered mine with every option that was available for 03, except for the front license plate bracket and the painted rims that came on the 50th limited additions. It has a little over 142,000 miles on it and it’s never been wrecked. I have loved driving it for almost 20 years now and would hate to part with it. I average about 40,000 miles on a set of Michelin Pilot tires and that’s all that’s been on it since the original eagles wore out. I’ve driven it in all kinds of weather except snow, we don’t get much of that white stuff in south Louisiana. Have fun driving yours if you have on, I will. Thanks.

Watched this video several times over before buying my 2000 C5. I am well aware of its possible issues, bottom line for me is worst case an EBCM issue which is not the end of the world either + I can afford the piece if need be. Other issues are occasional maintenance I can afford as well. I don't push the car either, EBCM it's more of a safety issue if I need to do some emergency manoeuvre, it's just better to have all safety systems ON and brake quick or not spin, but so far no sign of worry on that end. Been a few weeks now, just planning on changing the harmonic balancer (seems ok but a bit used, probably stock, and starting to slightly vibrate so it can't hurt preemptively putting a brand new one) and switching to LED lights. Rest is awesome, dream car for me (it was THE corvette when I was a teen!) and enjoying every mn in it! Thanks for the video

So far all I've had to do on startup is hit reset and it automatically goes to just showing the mileage. No "wait 10 seconds" or any column lock issues. Tonight I am going to go to the passenger side floor board & check to see if there is a Lcm5 involved or if the paint shop just let the car sit to long as they told me they had to charge the battery before I take it home.
