Small update on the Heli 4.0 project

I'm looking at getting either two of the Heli 4.0 or five of the Heli 2.0. They will be tied in with a solar system I'm building also. I'll keep watching and maybe you'll have your Heli 4.0 up before I decide which direction I'm going.

Have you tried to heat thick metal with torch before welding? Helps surprisingly much at least when stick welding. Now passed friend of mine that used to work as a welder of cruise ships gave me this tip. Supposedly also helps when trying to weld two types of metals together when other one has higher melting point. Haven't still tried this myself.

It would absolutely work and I've done it...but I don't have a torch capable of heating that large an area properly.

Great video. That is a really good structure. Look forward to see how the base will be formed. Is it going to be some sort of tilt mount I wonder, or are you going to crane it up?

There's another triangular base that's going to be attached via a hinge, then it'll tilt up wit a gin pole.

Total length to the hub is going to be about 36ft, blades will be scraping 40 at the top. I'm capped at 40ft. It does indeed look short on the side, but it's going to be taller than the tower my i2000 is on.

What is your main reason for wind? Do you have an off grid system ot do you just back feed the grid to roll your meter slower or backwards?

I'm grid tied, where I am batteries are too expensive and the grid is really reliable so there's not much to gain by going off grid. I like play with wind turbines, it's just where my fascination lay.

I am trying to decide between a Heli 4.0 and the Ramsond L3500. I have a hard time finding all the information I need to determine the wire size I need to run 200 feet to the workshop I am placing all the equipment. I see some say 48vDC and others are free voltage and AC. Which setup would require the smallest wire size without sacrificing voltage? I will have Hybrid controller and a rack of LifePo4 batteries.

The higher the voltage, the smaller the wire. For a 48vac generator making 3000w you're looking at 60 amps. To span 200ft (does this include the height of the tower?) with zero loss you're looking at 6/3 copper or 4/3 aluminum. 8/3 copper will give you about a 10% loss. I run even smaller wire for those loads but I accept the greater loss.

@@ToysforWatts Yes, that includes 50 feet of tower. I just had my slab poured for a windmill tower with one side being hinged so I can bring it up and down using my tractor loaderwforks as the jib. thx for the info, I'll prob go 4/3 aluminum.
