That was a great video. It's about time someone shared how they test the distance of these AP. The documentation doesn't say much regarding obstructions, or distance for indoor AP, and the outdoors has just distance (which I assume is line of sight). Again, thanks for sharing your test.

Got 3 indoor variants of those APs, totally happy with them - and this video motivates me to buy outdoor variant. Also Omada manager is pretty easy to use and really unlocks the potential if you do have more than 2 or 3 APs its definitely worth it. Whats even better - omada can be installed to rpi. (not particularly easy but can be done)

I commented before about mine, and I'm commenting again. Swapped out the antennas on it with some higher gain ones. Be careful doing this, you may actually hurt your coverage.. Gain narrows the beamwidth, and you're trading off 'near' coverage for 'far' coverage by doing this, especially right under it. 5db is a good compromise (and what comes with these by default), but I needed to cover a lot of land as I use it to mow my fields out in the boonies. My goal was to 'beat the trees' a little bit, as I had one spot in the yard that was being negatively affected by the trees... Anyways, I had my most favorable test today. Normally I just mow with it and don't usually range test it, but I was curious. 1,594 feet away from the AP before it dropped. Before the antenna swap, I was getting about a thousand feet.. So definite improvement.

@@kjvlogs5956 the techtoo 9dbi 2-pack on Amazon is the one I bought, and I'm still satisfied with these and recommend them for the right reasons.. for covering further horizontally at the cost of vertical signal, like covering a rural property, or from the center of the parking lot of a truck stop, or a trailer park, etc.. directional could be a better way to do in some instances, or a corner reflector.. there are lots of ways to optimize, but each niche use can have it's upsides and downsides, and one may work better for you than another, depending mostly on AP location relative to area targeted, obstructions, and distance... RF is still very much a "dark art" :/

The reason it works better when facing the antenna is because you're acting as a giant RF shield. 2.4ghz is absorbed by water, so trees, leaves on trees, human beings, etc.. 5ghz is a bit less selective about what it's stopped by, it just doesn't like any obstructions. With that said, I ordered an eap110 (same thing but without 5ghz), and your practical review in a real world environment (with some trees in the way, and on a standard smartphone) was what knocked me off the fence and into the buy side. Looks like this will do a much better job at covering 7 acres than my current roaming setup, though I'm still going to have one roaming ap in the barn... Metal roof is worse than a human body for WiFi signals.

Thanx for the information, i also plan to have eap110 coz i love in trees and crowds environment
@soulnull
@soulnull 5 жыл бұрын
@@albusaidi29 I've been using it since a few days after I left this reply. We have some trees on our property too, and I was quite impressed with its performance. To explain, we have a RT-AC3200 in the living room, which is about 30 feet closer than the outdoor router on the side of the house with the weeping willow. When the willow is not in the way, both signals are similar. Behind the willow, I lose the RT-AC3200 entirely (it does have multiple walls to compete with) whereas the eap110 holds a pretty good signal. Line of sight helps. I can turn off the roaming AP in my barn and still get 3/4 bars in there, and that's about 150 feet from the access point and with a metal roof over the barn. So I do recommend it if you need good coverage for longer distances. Huge difference over the indoor router. Also walked the perimeter of the property, there are no spots where I lose more than a bar of signal. Some of those are about 300 feet away (according to google earth), so quite a little beast. Granted, there aren't any other APs in the area to compete with on our channels, so that helps, but still quite impressive. I can barely even see (and usually don't see) the RT-AC3200.. Which is technically a more powerful signal (though barely), but having this outdoor and mounted higher makes a huge difference.

I’ve used ubiquity’ nano and pico range and they worked pretty well. Was visiting a friend who wanted to set up outdoor WiFi. Figured we could use these as they were omnidirectional and easily available. Picked up a couple but there wasn’t a repeater mode, instead it needed a mesh controller which has to be bought separately. Even low end TP link routers come with repeater mode so this was a shock. Ended up using a spare low powered router to bridge since a cable would ruin the aesthetics, Mounted one on a 15 foot pole. Range was about 100ft. They’re a few large bushy plants and trees which seemed to dampen the signal quiet a bit. Just about Ok I’d say.

300' is impressive. Imagine what it would do mounted slightly above your roofline and with a broad line of sight. I have a friend who has some property, but due to their tin materials on the side of the home, their wifi struggles to get out of the house. This would be ideal mounted 30' up on their power pole. I think they'd get full property coverage. Do you have any updated feedback on performance? Cheers.

The signal may be linear. The 8th floor is quite high up. You might want to point the antennas at an angle toward to pool if you have it on the balcony and there are no obstructions. If you have this in your condo and not on a balcony or with tress and obstructions, it's going to be hard to get a signal.

@@bkayfetz Are the security flaws in the RE305 fixed? "AUGUST 2018 Multiple bugs in TP-Link Wi-Fi Extenders From Bad to Worse: Firmware Vulnerability Detection with the Centrifuge Platform by Craig Heffner of Refirm Labs August 13, 2018 This story starts with a command injection vulnerability published for the TP-Link WL-WA850RE Wi-Fi Range Extender. The bug grants a remote attacker complete access to the device, but it requires administrative credentials. Using software from his company, the Centrifuge Platform, Heffner found a more serious bug that allows a remote attacker to completely control the device even without prior knowledge of the administrative credentials. The vulnerability affects multiple TP-Link products, including devices connected to the Internet and therefore susceptible to remote attack. At first, Heffner found tons of calls to strcpy with stack addresses as the destination. Then he put the httpd binary into a disassembler. In the previously known bug, the wps_setup_pin value can be used to exploit both a stack-based buffer overflow and command injection. But, the vulnerable code sits behind an authentication check. So, he looked for HTTP requests that do not require authentication. He got a list of 24 function handlers that do not require authentication. The most interesting one was: /fs/data/config.bin which generates the backup configuration file. Yes, an un-authenticated user can dump a file with the admin password. The config file is compressed and DES encrypted. But, TP-Link has been re-using the same encryption key for years. After decrypting the config file, Heffner found the admin password was stored as an MD5 hash which can be directly fed into the web interface of the router. Attackers do not need to know the plain text password. Heffner wrote: "Thanks to vendor code reuse, bugs like these are rarely isolated to a single product (or even to a single OEM!)." So, he went looking for other TP-Link products that might be affected, again using software from his company that scans firmware for known vulnerabilities. Other vulnerable range extenders are the: RE305, RE450, TL-WA830RE, TL-WA850RE and the TL-WA855RE. Heffner found many of these were directly accessible from the Internet. He developed a proof of concept exploit script that grabs the configuration file, decrypts it, decompresses it, authenticates to the target device, and exploits the command injection bug to start a telnet server on port 8080. It appears that little, if any, work has been done by either researchers or TP-LInk into whether other devices are affected by these bugs. TP-Link was told of all this but there are, as of now, no patches. It is not clear if they responded to Heffner at all. TP-Link TL-WA850RE - Remote Command Execution June 20, 2018 by yoresongo. In Network, 5ghz wireless is not used for long distance, it is for sharing files and excellent for straming or playing online games. 5ghz is always good to use it in closed area (small distance) , moreover 5ghz wireless has not been detected by some devices especially computers and laptops, because they are designed for only 2.4ghz and their adapters don't support it, in my opinion if your tplink isn't placed in free space , you should to disable 5ghz and use only 2.4ghz.

I have very little experience with Ubiquiti's products. I hear very good things about them. However I find that their interfaces are highly technical and therefore more difficult to use. Also their support is email only and in my experience they take 24 to 48 hours to respond to emails.

Just bought one, works fine with its injector, but won't power up when connected to a 802.3af/at switch that currently has 2 other Axis PoE cameras on it working fine. Switch is rated for 60W, cams use 5-10W each. I tried switching ports, cables, everything. Just won't power up. Can you test (with a PoE switch) to see if it really is an 802.11af compliant device, or if you have to use the injector brick.

Funny you mention that. I am now running the EAP outside at a marina. It's running on the supplied POE injector. I am planning on adding a couple of outdoor cameras to the mix and I'm about to replace the injector with a TP-Link POE switch I had lying around. I may get to that tomorrow. I'll post the results here.

This afternoon I swapped out the supplied injector with a small POE switch. The TP Link TL-SG108PE . It worked perfectly. I'll also be adding 1 or 2 Poe cameras. Maybe I'll post a video on the project...

I tested a maximum of 90 meters using a cell phone, keep in mind cell phones have very sall antennas in them. There are also issues in Wi-Fi passing through concrete, steel and glass To consider. The only real way to know for sure is to buy one and test it.

Hi ben, Do you have an idea on maximum client to connect through this access point? Please advise, thanks,
@bkayfetz
@bkayfetz 5 жыл бұрын
From TP-Link support: There isn’t a fix amount of maximum clients, as it will depend on the network bandwidth occupied by applications running on each of the clients. According to previous testing, 25 devices will be able to stream video without issues, with 30 devices you may have occasional errors.

hi ben thanks for ur review. im looking to buy this product for my business. hows does this product do with 10-15 users? any idea last time i had problems with eap 120, just not handling it.
@bkayfetz
@bkayfetz 6 жыл бұрын
I have an EAP225 and EAP200 non-outdoor versions running in one site with over 20 users, but never more than 5 to 7 at one time. They do the job well. I know the 120 is an older model and TP-Link has come a long way in the last couple of years. All that being said, I wouldn't be worried about 15 users in regards to the EAPs. I'd be more worried about the ISP.

I was planning to buy some Mikrotik to put them on the backyard of my mom's house she's always complaining how bad the WiFi is on the pool side of the house.. But these make a lot more sense for the price.. 😁 Mikrotik got finally beat by another brand on price performance.

Mikrotik wifi is terrible. I have them, cap ac and wap ac. Tried a ubiquity u6-lr recently (bought it for my dad), it alone trumped my both in-house cap ac aps and covered some of the property that mikrotik failed to do. Now going to change my own setup to eap670 or two in the house and a couple of these outdoor ones for the property, with an oc200 to manage them centrally.
