Great review! Thanks for touching on the power outage scenario. Would you happen to know how the power strip operates in the specific scenario of a "wifi outage" in the home? Occasionally (not often, but worth asking), I'll temporarily lose wifi in the home if/ when my ISP needs to perform maintenance. In this scenario, with the power strip losing its wifi connection to my network, would the devices plugged into the power strip remain powered on and functioning, simply rendering them unaccessible on the kasa app? Or, does the lack of wifi connection completely kill the power strip's ability to provide power to plugged in devices until a wifi connection is restored? Thanks in advance.
@Wanderer001_Reviews
@Wanderer001_Reviews Жыл бұрын
If this plug no longer can access wifi the outlets will remain in whatever state they were when the connection was lost. If on they will remain on. If off they will stay off. In both cases you will not be able to access from the app. However, they can still be manually operated from the plug itself. Once wifi is resotred full functionality will come back through the app.

Some devices don't like using an external power strip to control the on-off function. Because all you're really doing is cutting power to the device. I had an air conditioner that I could use the Smart Switch to turn on and off by cutting the power and turning the power back on. However my new air conditioner will not let me do that I can turn it off by cutting the power beer the Smart Switch but when I try and turn it back on by restoring power via the Smart Switch the air conditioner itself will not turn on.

Can this strip be plugged into a battery back-up unit? If so, it will not lose power even for a short time in case of a black-out... which would be priceless! There are components (plugged into the strip) that could be in need of restarting manually if the strip loses power even for a moment... if you happen not to be home at the time of the black-out ...this could be a problem! Unless of course the strip maintains power thru a batteyr back-up system.

I do not see why you could not. The only thing is if your wifi goes down then it might not be worth having this plugged into an UPS.
@conradb7200
@conradb7200 5 жыл бұрын
Wanderer001 I have a whole house generator which automatically comes online within three or four seconds after the blackout. What I need the strip for is to be plugged into my back up battery system. Everything I will have plugged into the strip will be protected with a steady flow of battery back up power and with no few second delay. My Computer and Wi-Fi system will then be plugged into the strip which will be backed up. This will assure that the Wi-Fi system will not go out with the power which used to happen before. When the power would come back on the Wi-Fi would stay off and I could not control or access my computer while away ... which I generally do when there is no black out.

The main reason I'm looking for this is I plan on traveling overseas and will be using remote play on my ps4 to laptop. My main concern other than the wifi strength depending on where I am at (my home wifi is great) is any power outages. If my power goes out and my ps4 turns off I would have to manually turn it on to access remote play. So my question is will this surge protector allow me to turn on my ps4 remotely after any possibly power outages? I will obviously be using this plug for other things eventually but this is my main reason now.

If I understand you correctly I don't think this will do what you want it to. Using this power strip would be just like cutting the power to your PS4 via a power outage. I tested it with my PS3. Once power is lost the PS3 shut down. Power restored did not mean that the PS3 booted back up. I still needed to press the one button on the PS3. I think what you are looking for is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). This would keep your PS4 up and running if there was a power outage. You can look through a few here: amzn.to/2BHUETR. Hope that helps.

It seems pointless to buy the individual smartplugs when you can buy this instead. Also, what happens when you buy two powerstrips???
@Wanderer001_Reviews
@Wanderer001_Reviews 3 жыл бұрын
There are some places where you don't need multiple socket so a power strip wouldn't make sense. Also the single smart plugs are cheaper than the power strip. If you have two of the same device including a smart power strip each has its own Mac address. So you can run multiples in the same household. Just make sure to name the plugs uniquely.

@@Wanderer001_Reviews That's awesome, thanks for the more detailed information. I only have two double socket outlets in my bedroom, so I need as many power strips as I can get, apparently, lol.

Good video. Fyi the wall mount is junk. Cannot believe something so simple is done poorly. I use a lot of Kasa in my wood shop. Had to make something to safely wall mount and be able to plug and unplug items

Nice capability and user experience review, props for that. However, I watched the whole 23 minutes, and you never said anything about security, vulnerabilities, increased attack surface to your network, leakage reports from Wireshark, or any penetration testing. Disappointed. :/

My reviews are geared more towards the lay user. Most who are really concerned with security would never use an off the shelf IoT device. Which is why I do not address those here.
@CronyxRavage
@CronyxRavage 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I totally appreciate that stance, as far as being a stated goal. My concern is that the lay user is the most vulnerable /because/ they're the lay user, and I wonder if it couldn't be argued they need more concern for them in effect "baked in" to any review, on their behalf, simply because they don't know they're supposed to ask such questions. I think the lay person doesn't think to be concerned about every channel on their smart TV except Telemundo having a parental lock set as a joke, and their Nest "combination thermostat / home security camera" rerouted to Twitch. But my intuition is that, were that to happen to them, they'd suddenly care a lot, and it's trivially easy to do that if they install the wrong smart light bulb. The most important thing for any device you plug into your network, is for the security credentials and schema it uses be completely owned by the user, and that there is no hidden / undocumented "maintenance account" (that's literally what a backdoor is) that tech support can use to log in without asking you for what you changed the login to. Because once someone wardrives down a rich neighborhood, finds a smart thing broadcasting its factory default SSID in the clear, they just download the list of known factory default passwords for that device from pastebin, log into it, and now they're basically as if they were plugged into your router from inside your house, physically. Because now their laptop, from their car outside, has a "localhost" IP either in the 10dot range or the 192dot range, and that means your home router will happily listen to that internal, local IP address for admin login (not to mention the rest of your IoT devices on that network), because it thinks its authorized. And that means you can start doing things like sending a local network command to the smart door locks to open the front door, open the garage door, or turn off motion sensors for alarms / security cameras, as those commands will now be coming from "inside the house." I'd really like to have the convenience of phone controlled turney offey light bulbs, but without the increased attack surface they imply. I'm trying to find reviews for smart power strips / surge protectors, but all anyone doing those reviews wants to talk about is how bright the status LEDs are in a room you might be sleeping in, whereas I want to know which one to buy from a security perspective. :/
@Wanderer001_Reviews_Clips
@Wanderer001_Reviews_Clips 2 жыл бұрын
@@CronyxRavage I can see where you are coming from. The reason you see so many reviews talking about how bright a status light is in a dark room is because those videos are the ones that get the watch time. I remember in the early days of youtube there were a few channels out there that would get supper into the weeds with devices but their view count suffered for it and because of that they would not be shown as often. Even myself know that my videos don't get the traffic that some others do who unbox something or just read a spec sheet. I hate to say it but you might be better severed more with a tech or security blog. At least then they know people are their because they really want to know about that stuff and can get really in depth with it.
