TP-Link M7200 - 4G Router for Mobil Internet on the Road - 1101

I bought a TP-LINK M7200 Mobile WiFI Hotspot 4G Router. I am on vacation in Portugal, and my work payed phone will do talk and SMS at normal prices, but data is €200 per 1GB and that is "CHEAP" because I an within the EU. Outside the EU the prices it can be €8700 for the same 1 GB.
So my work places do really not want to pay a lot extra for me to go on vacation with the phone they have given me for work. They do like me to available in an emergency, but not to pay a fortune for me to use google maps or just watch KZbin.
To to keep in good standing at work, I did not use data on my phone. I bought a local sim card for just €10,, with 20GB on it,, and that would have cost €4000 on my work account :(

Excellent video and great idea for anyone who hadn’t yet thought of this for travel. You should probably change the SSID on the TP-Link to something like ‘MyPlayhouse-TPL’ so that if you connect to it at your home (eg: to test it before another trip), it doesn’t have a duplicate SSID to your normal home SSID.

Your company mobile contract violates EU law! In the EU are no roaming charges allowed if you come from another EU country. This also applies for mobile data!

It protects people's private phone bills,, and I am company account (work phone) That is not included,, company to company business is not regulated,, as far as I know.

@@MyPlayHouse Morten, Our company users can use data in every EU country without additional costs. Basically no difference or cost than when they use data in Belgium. I think this was the purpose of the law to make is seemless between EU countries. The TP-Link devices create an USB network adapter when you plug them in a pc. So they charge from usb and you don’t have to bother to use wifi, and still can use them as a hotspot for your phone or tablet. Thank you for making these videos!

People already talked about the costs, but yeah, i also suffer the same... My LebaraDK data plan is 100GB in DK, but only 5 when in roaming... So im also buying that router for my vacations to my home country, Portugal. Regarding the data usage reported by the device, and because the seller sold you and already used and returned device (same as ElGiganten Outlet), the 15GB used are not yours but the ones from the previous user... There should be a way to reset them. After that, and with a completely new sim card, they both should be with equal consumption, but if you use another card, then the router keeps rising. You can only see the Lyca consumption trouth their app or site, with the IMEI of the sim card.

@@MyPlayHouse I forgot, I looked through Yandex translator. I wrote that it is better to use a modem in the form of a usb with wifi, or immediately take a swing at mikrotik. And in our country there is no such cult of apple products, and any Chinese smartphone with 2 SIM cards solves problems. You may find if the unit was used before you need to zero the used data amount as it still sees how much was used with the previous user

Looking at your phone I have 2 questions: Why not get a eSIM to use data? And why not enabling Wi-Fi Calling? Using a esim for data and having Wi-Fi calling enabled, iPhone (only iPhones) uses the Wi-Fi calling over LTE on the data SIMCard so you could make and receive calls over Wi-Fi calling (using data of your esim) reducing costs 😉

@@MyPlayHouse physical SIM or eSIM are the same for iOS, if you have Wi-Fi calling enabled and is without signal on one SIMCard (doesn’t matter which one) the other will use the Wi-Fi calling over LTE and simply works 😉 Also great for roaming without paying extra for calls since Wi-Fi calling works “like home” 😉 P.s.: if you need help translating something to Portuguese, give me a call

As I've got a week off in October I bought the same 4G Router. Haven't tried it yet, but the data sim (called Smarty), that came with it, is unlimited data for twenty UK pounds a month. It's not a contract that locks you in and I'll probably cancel the sim after the holiday, as it won't be needed then.

@@MyPlayHouse As my holiday draws near I decided to activate the m7200. It worked well, but for an IT geek where's the fun in that? So I flashed a old Linksys router with DD-WRT and setup a wifi client bridge to the m7200. That gave me 4 Ethernet ports, but sacrificed much of DD-WRT security to do it, so I ran a Mikrotik Routerboard off that and got suck into RouterOS. My wife and daughters look into my office with that facial expression of bewilderment that only non-geeks have for 'over the top' technical solutions to non-existent problems, but I feel rather pleased with myself:-)

It still works great,, I did run in to an power issue,, that I have solved. and an overheating issue that is still an issue. To run it all the time I had a long USB power cable connected, and it turned out that using the router hard (FTP file transfers many hours) I was getting less power ind, than it was using,, and it turned off. Took me awhile to figure out what was going on,, But putting the USB charger closer with a short cable solved it. Many hours of use,, it needs air flow and to not be in the sun.

You might have to tell the router the pin code of the sim card.

A bit of a late follow up to your question, but there are apps for Apple and Android devices I think called TPMifi which greatly expand the control available to you for the TP Link devices , you can also use an external Power Bank to power them as well via the supplied charging cable, so say a 16,000 mah power bank should work for about eight times as long as the supplied battery. I’m presently shopping for at least one, to replace a pretty monstrous one I’ve been using in rural Andalucia, which has 4 external aerials plus a socket for an external aerial , great performance, at 300 to 330 mbs a second, but an absolute pita to lug around 🤣 TP Link proved a good buy and reliable when I tested their home Routers, when I was building Custom Computers for people, and was able to recommend them to customers, and they never had a problem to my knowledge. I’m not sure exactly which model to get for my Sailboat as yet, but I think this M7000 is going to be a good backup spare one to the M7350 model. Still pondering on that one tbh though.Best Wishes. If for example you want 15 days unlimited internet card you have sim cards for 15 euros or even 25 Euros for 30 days unlimited data, so many options here.
