My FIRST amp was my Dad's hand-me-down 1955 Supro Spectator... I used it with my Sears Les Paul and 2 pedals... a Fender Blender fuzz and an EHX Screaming Tree treble booster. The fuzz was nice, but crank the 5 watt Supro with the treble booster and it was HEAVEN!! (Incidentally, that KE64 is KILLER!! I am a fan! And thanks for the head's up on the podcast... I'm in!)

I believe Leo had the strat design given to him straight from God (might have been a burning amp involved). They are just so unique and full of personality. Its the only guitar that I can listen to on an album and go yep thats a strat. Well maybe Teles also. Not saying other guitars don’t sound freaking great. They do!

James Dalziel agree with this. I do worry in the odd episode here and there that the guys are using bedroom tones that you can’t even use in your bedroom because of the amps they choose. Be good for them to prove they’re useable in a band setting!!
@mattgilbert7347
@mattgilbert7347 6 жыл бұрын
Rog Pigfender Agreed. I'd like to see them use the kinds of amps most of us have (AC15, Blues Jnr, DSL40, Hot Rod dlxe etc) and some commonly used pedals (TS9, BD2, Flashback, etc) in a live setting and see if they can cut through a mix at volume.

Wow Mick! Hope to not offend you saying that I am very surprized you listening to Metal 2 years straight :))! The first 2 records were just mind blowing good. Yes, back in the days he was Hamer (made me buy one ;) and Mesa. He is now a PRS artist playing a signature model with Foyd Rose and EMGs. Anyhow, what may interest you most is, that unnoticed they came out with a new record in 2017 "Shade" which is all blues influenced (not only according to them) and has an awesome cover of Marvin Gayes "Inner City Blues". Hard to notice?: LC - all time favourite.

I recently acquired one of these old valco 2 channel 6973 tube amps and I’ve got to say they are night and day difference to the new modern supro. It nails the page tone whereas the new supro has a sound of its own. Good but different to the original valco made circuits. Two huge differences as I understand; one being that the new 6973 tubes are built differently than the RCA 6973, and secondly the original circuits have massive amount of ceramic caps that definitely flavor the circuit. Solid state also reacts so differently than tube rectified, especially with effects. The original circuit plays better with fuzz and overdrive better than any other amp I’ve played with. As I’m listening you are closer to the Zeppelin tone with the two rock and that first pedal. Harmonically rich is the key to that sound, especially with the tele.

Really interesting. I waited 6 months from the previous Namm to try the Black Magick and I was really disappointed, for the same reason, that said I really liked it clean and the tremolo was fantastic. The majestic sounds great the MeLody looks super cool too which is part majesty/part dude with the same EQ from the Rockaway archer. Synth Fuzz - yes please! We need an ep on the EQD side of life. I was thinking the other the day that Stefan from the Pedal Zone would make a great guest! Long one tonight sorry. Little bit excited.

When you get the band space up and running, we should definitely see a video about using pedals vs cranking a non-master volume amp. I think the Supro would be choice for that video, as it takes pedals well and also cranks up well on its own. Please compare the difference between using an extremely quiet volume on the amp (compressed cleans, "transparent" rhythm crunch, and a solo volume boost from pedals exclusively) to the setting the amp on the edge of breakup crunch (using pedals to push it over the edge, roll back the guitar volume for cleans) and cranking the amp full volume (using only the guitar volume knob to roll back for crunch and clean sounds) in a live band context! How does the low volume clean sound (guitar volume up full) compare to the cranked up clean sound (guitar volume rolled back)? How does the natural compression of the cranked amp compare to pedal compression? How does using a boost in front of an amp at the edge of breakup compare to just cranking the amp volume up full? How do humbuckers clean up vs single coils? I used to run my 28 watt amp at a pretty clean setting with a compressor for cleans and a King of Tone for OD and a solo boost. I'm just plugging straight into the amp now because I find that the difference in volume is negligible between my solo boosted signal vs playing straight into the amp cranked up. I also found that I had a bit of natural compression even when I rolled the guitar volume back to clean up, so I didn't need the compressor as much for more subtle settings. Interested to hear your thoughts and see how overdrive pedals, boost pedals, cranked power tubes, and playing with a live band all interact with each other!
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Jake, great question. Doing some of that will be pretty difficult but we will try to explore those topics. Truth is, it’s not a this or that situation. The whole thing is a massive sliding scale grey area and you just pick your point along it. The useful but is knowing what to tweak. For Dan and I we prefer a bit of both: amp working nicely and pedals on top. Dan prefers a little more amp than I do I think. We can get into this!
@jakestewartmusic
@jakestewartmusic 6 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yeah, clearly every player has their own preferences here and it gets very specific when we get into the details from speakers to pickups and exactly which pedals are pushing the amp, etc. But it'd definitely be interesting to see your own personal thoughts on comparing these things in more general terms. I've just noticed a lot of local players using their amps extremely quietly and relying on the pedals to do most of the work, when lately I've been plugging right into my Carr Rambler and playing it on 10 with a touch of spring reverb and footswitching the tube bias tremolo. I used pedals to try to get the same sound before because I thought it would be too loud to crank, but my stage volume barely changed!

Hello Dan and Mick. Great great content. Been watching for quite a while and I love going on tonal journeys with you weekly. I also love spending way too much money on pedals that I absolutely need. Here’s the question... could you guys consider doing a video on Amps and tubes? I hear cathode, class A, class AB, and all the others and I think “class WTF”. Cheers guys. You’re the best. BTW! I love the podcast. It’s awesome! Bad day at work, I’ll put some headphones on and hang out with my two friends for a while on lunch. Thanks for everything.

Hey Daniel. It’s quite tough looking at those concepts in isolation because they’re often wrapped up in the rest of the amp design too. Often we might remark that the amp is cathode biased or class A, but it’s just one aspect of its design. Hmmm. Wonder if we could put some sense on it?

After a bunch of delay pedals I’ve come to the conclusion that it is difficult to find one that works well with some gain in front of the amp, and clean. There are delays that sound great cleaned up, and are not great to my ear with a drive pedal or distortion. And then the other way around... I’m currently using the unglamorous Digitech Obscura, and a trusty DD3. The Supro sounded great. Haven’t heard one of those models yet (in person). I like Supro’s weird little Titan amp which was discontinued. 1x10 50 watts...

Not sure if it’s been said but the new Supro gets close! The main thing is the original Coronado Page had used 6L6GB. Probably the Tremolo 12ax7 was taken out for extra gains at time. I feel he maybe used 6V6 tubes in it with The Lemon Song. Also that MKII ToneBender is pretty important. Listen to I Can’t Quit You Babe for a pretty good example of the amp with little drive effects etc

4:50; brack iis an Irish tea loaf. I was raised on it, and whilst it isn't magical, it's rather good.

bobbler42 i was thinking the same thing. The Fender boys ate a brack that they thought was only magic and named an amp after it.

Bringin out the Two rock ! sounds amazing Mick. I wasn't sure if the two rock was involved until you moved your arm and I saw that the light was on on the head...but hearing the tone I was thinking " surely thats the two rock " Sounds great!

No worries James! It’s on for most of the vid - obviously not the bit where we’re just talking about the Supro. It’s a thing of wonder to me, still. :0)

Amazing amp. I am loving my studio pro 50 that I recently bought and your channel inspired me to get a two rock. So thanks !

Cool! It’s a heavy responsibility when people tell us that, so I’m stoked that it’s doing the business for you. Mine’s currently getting the bejesus kicked out of it by Matt Schofield who is here for a few days. Mmmmmmmm

It was your sound with your strat and the studio pro 35 in several videos that made me think " man that is just a sweet all round tone and that amp takes pedals SO well " then when you got the classic reverb It was like 0_0..... Your video with Matt Schofield was also a massive influence on my choice of amp.... just an AMAZING sound.... I also bought the mad professor royal blue overdrive because of that video haha... GREAT pedal. You guys are really doing great things with this channel. I look forward to every video. They are all just honest and true to the gear that you are using and it's all really inspiring man.... and I am not easily impressed ! This channel has re ignited a spark for me in terms of playing more bluesy/fusion style guitar again as I have been a bit too obsessed with straight ahead jazz for the last 3 years. You guys have inspired me to get back in touch with what i always loved playing before the jazz thing took over my life for a while! Really, I just want to say thank you for your channel! I look forward to seeing many more "Thatpedal" shows ! : )

I bought the Supro 1624T Dual-Tone instead of the Black Magick because I thought then and still think the Black Magick is to farty in the bottom end. I did never get a great sound out of it, but the Dual-Tone delivers well balanced tones on what ever guitar I put into it.

Man, those two amps are soulmates. :D ps Would've liked a tiny bit more Supro in the mix, but that's just me. pps Thanks Mick, read my mind there. :)
