Hey guys! Thanks so much for the amazing response to the last video. I'm back again with another legato lesson - this time looking at muting technique and specifically my favourite sound - palm muted legato! Hope you enjoy it and be sure to leave your comments and questions below. Have a great week. Tom

Is there any chance that Ibanez will release this iteration of your signature guitar as a production model? I like it a lot!

Could you please consider using a compressor for your voice track or add some gain? Your speaking is much quieter than your guitar level and I have to keep adjusting the volume control. I listen through monitoring headphones.

@@salungaitan7194 Rick Graham is a close second for me, but I still consider Graham style still somewhat (albeit not strictly) focused to old-school conventional smooth legato with emphasis on modes and extended voicing string-skipped arpeggios... whereas Tom sound a bit more close-ranged interval note-wise and somehow a little more abrasive

Great work here Tom! You can hear how Nuno from Extreme used this technique extensively on his first 2 albums. It's how he got that "super sharp" clean scale playing coming through so well. A lot of people think Nuno was alternate picking many of his lines, but much of it was this type of technique, which does sound like it's being "lightly" picked per note. And, truly, Van Halen used this "palm muted" legato as well, so it's been around for some time actually.

Tom, this is incredible. Your way of showing these things is really really great, shows how much you understand the process of teaching guitar. But I would like to learn more about your style of hybrid picking. The legato part of the video is actually easier for me to understand, but I feel that the hybrid picking style adds to this very nicely. I can see that you usually start a run with the pick but then when you go up the strings you do an upstroke with your finger, which adds a softness to the sound. And you use your pick to go down the strings also with an upstroke. I know it's hard work, but maybe if you feel like going into more details on this technique in future videos, it would be great. Thank you for the video!

He tunes the top two strings to C and F like Stanley Jordan does, I suppose to avoid the change in the scale patterns with that happens when you approach the second string. Well, I guess if it works for him, but it doesn’t seem like that much of a problem to memorize a few idiosyncrasies in scale pattern? It also makes playing chords a lot more effective to do it with the normal way.

Dear Mr Quayle, ,Question... Do I put questions here? Going up the scale .. why roll the hand , is it not possible to leave the side of the right hand over all the strings for the whole passage? And .. descending ... how do you keep the first finger muting strings if you need it to play notes as well ? Or maybe I’m just doing it wrong . Thank you for your attention
