I love the deliberate directing choices they made for the film-- like not explicitely stating how much time has passed in order for the audience to understand Maquia's position, in the sense that in her long life the concept of time to her is essentially non-existent. So when we suddenly see Ariel getting older without so much as a warning it shocks us to think this is how Maquia feels. So powerful.

Many people may not see this comment. The script writer Okada Mari also made Nagi no Asukara 2013. It has similar writing compared to this movie. That feeling of not falling in love because you will be truly lonely. But, in this case. It's in a Rom-com with a interesting lore. People of the land and People from sea. The anime has real world problems such as climate change and racism. As time goes on people have to adaptating change. Learning to come together and understanding the past, current present where change has occur and there is no turning back time, creating a future where everyone can be happy in a imperfect world. There are shippings in the anime but, it handles themselves. It has good memorable ost, the artwork is ahead of it's time in for a 2013 anime. It's pretty well done and underrated. I recommend anyone to watch it, if you seen Maquia. You wont be disappointed.

Watching this was such an emotional rollercoaster the story of a mom taking care of her baby which isn’t even hers. there’s been quite a lot of bumps then and there, Marquia raised her son from new-born to Adult hood, then comes back near before he dies. I don’t think she cried because he was about to die but cried because of the amazing journey. she didn’t regret anything she did, she had broke her promise, also the same time I made an indoor pool out of tears, truly beautiful. You know what I’ve learnt from this show. No matter what life choice you make it will also have its pros and cons. No matter what you choose. Take this anime for example, do you really think being immortal is the best thing? Of course you are spared from physical pain but what is stopping you from mental pain? Do you really think someone can endure a life where everyone around them slowly grows old and leaves you? Since we are all mortal, we should cherish this time with our parents, the ones who raised us to become the people we are. Every time your parents ask to help out, you should do it without hesitation as they didn’t hesitate in raising you.

People in the comment sections fighting one another saying that Maquia is better than Kimi no na wa or Kimi no na wa is better than Maquia. Let's face it, both works are really good. You have different strokes for different folks in the sense that somethings in one work seemed to appeal more to a person than in the other anime film, however, it's all about how the film struck you personally. Both films are amazing in their own right and do things that are unique in conveying their story here. To be honest, films like Koe no Katachi which Kyoto animation was in charge of as well as Violet Evergarden we're good and I can safely say that films such as Grave of the Fireflies or most to any Ghibli anime films are good and things like Koe no Katachi, Maquia(PA Works was in charge of it as well as Irodoku if anyone watches seasonals and many other good series adaptations), Kimi no na Wa, Garden of Words, and 5 cm per second(Makoto Shinkai works) are all heavily good in their own sense. So it is not right to put one film over the other. It's alright to say you found one more enjoyable cause it connected to you better or on a personal level, but each work is great regardless of the few points that they may have missed on the mark. Keep in mind that they all possess similarities while also trying to convey something different or unique in their regard.

True. No anime is better than the other. It's all about how the viewers see the anime on his own view

2 years ago I saw this and ugly cried my way out of the cinema. I haven't been able to watch it again because of how it made me feel. Today I decided to search for the ending, and damn, it hit me again right the chest.

i used to think modern anime lost its touch but after watching this movie that's from 2018 i was impressed that there's still anime being made today with beautiful quality art and storylines.

The most tragic yet beautiful animated film I've ever seen. I could not for the love of God keep myself from crying, even though I was watching this with my family. Easily my favorite anime film for making me cry like the weak human I am and creating a story a son like me can empathize with. 10/10 film. Would watch again. For sure!

Ive watched a lot of sad anime like anohana but they never made me cry so technically this is the first anime to get under my skin and got me crying from the heart. Bonus info: the director of Maquia is also the author of the novel of Anohana except in Maquia the director was also the writer of the story. (For those who dont know)

This moment killed my Manliness. I know it hurts but this scene can't hold my heart too much pain that made cry. She knew there is nothing to do but to say him a " _Goodbye_ " to her son for his very last moment. :'(

When I first watched this movie, I was in the airplane going to Japan and back from Japan. I cried when Maquia leaves Ariel after the invasion, after Ariel apologizes for avoiding her and when this scene came I cried again and it made me call my mom to apologize to her. This movie is so good

this movie was so... real. i think children don't appreciate their moms enough once they grow up, when they're young their mom is always by their sides, they're dependant/loving/clingy but soon enough they build their own life, live seperately and only think about them or get in contact once in a while... only when someone's about to leave one truly appreciates all the things their mother did for them... i don't want to regret not taking care of or giving back to the people who have given me their love... i will try to remind myself to always appreciate them and grow up faster so that i can give them happiness
