18:40 Little fact, in the french version, we got the same voice actress (Françoise Cadol) from the first Tomb Raider until the reboot of 2013. And she was absolutly perfect to the role.

12:45 This is consistent with TR3, where you can literally get shotgun in opening area, it was just stupidly hidden under vegetation. (And TR2 started you with a shotty). What IS different is that duplicate weapons do not turn into ammo pickups visually as they used to in TR2 and 3. There are TONS of places you can find same weapon but most players won't see since they already have it from somewhere else... FINALLY, the reason you have same weapons appear multiple times is allowing for a pistol start, I assume for debugging, or with the (cut) level select. In TRLE you can start from any level and it's welcome having weapons too not just ammo and assuming you got them earlier.

Although TR4 has more levels, each level is actually noticeably shorter than TR2 and TR3. I also don’t find the Egyptian aesthetics and single environment setting tiring, because most levels have their own unique looks, and together, all these levels paint a very coherent in-game civilization. This principle of aesthetics is very similar to the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot and Rise of Tomb Raider, while the majority of the games takes place in one location, each environment is different enough for the player to distinguish them. Considering TR4 is a Play Station 1 game, this design and attention to details is very impressive. Furthermore, if you actually look at some of the structures in real life, apparently, Core Design did a very good job recreating these locations in a PS1 game with graphic limitations.

Tr4 and tr1 (has a few Egypt levels) made me fall in love with Egypt history. And like you said, they did a great job in TR 4 recreating many real places in Egypt. I learned so much of history playing TR games.

I just recently started playing this again for the first time since I started it 22 years ago on the Playstation in 1999. I may be in my 50s now but my love for the Tomb Raider franchise is as strong as it was back in the late '90s and I am actually replaying all five original titles again on a Playstation emulator. It is amazing that for each title there are particular feelings and memories I have associated with certain levels and scenarios and I can picture in my mind and "feel" the exact time I originally experienced those scenarios, even down to who interrupted my gameplay of TR3 with a work-related telephone call at gone 9pm that evening!

Wideshot ammo is used against groups of enemies (would have been a Godsend in 2) and super grenades IIRC fire cluster munitions that explode to all sides, for the same purpose. With crossbow, ammo types are more self-explanatory, explosive bolts replace TR3's bazooka.

Man, this is so nostalgic to see this game for me. I remember sitting in the living room with my Dad on weekend evenings, turning all the lights off and just watching him play through The Last Revelation. The graphics at the time blew my tiny 5 year old mind. Occasionally he would put the cheats in for me and just let me run around some of the open spaces shooting walls with the cross bow, mostly because I was too scared to actually play any of the real game.

The Karnak hub gave me the same trouble it did for you when I beat it myself for the first time (via an unofficial US PS1 emulation on PSP) back in 2009, meaning I had to rely on Stella’s walkthrough to get through the first time. I did enjoy the “wizard’s chess version” Senet game against the robot semerkhet head though. Speaking of which, I actually have a senet board in real life and I can confirm it is basically Egyptian Backgammon with a little chess strategy mixed in. The lose route also has the first appearance of the wraiths (the flying jellyfish we used to call elementals before the level editor came out) where a fire wraith and an ice wraith can be pitted against each other. The piano keys as dice are real too, the main difference to TR4 being that rolling a 1 or a 4 also gives you an extra turn, not just 6. (Rolling a 6 being all black sides) Real senet also looks a little different, being more like the smaller board you see in Obelisk of Khamoom near eye of Horus bridge, but with 3 rows of tile spaces, no ankh squares and three shield squares & a water hazard near the end. Speaking of the terrible puzzle design, the FPS RPG Pathways into Darkness by Bungie (Yes, that Bungie. Also about pyramids and sealing away malevolent gods) has similar puzzles as well but with either extremely subtle clues similar to the hieroglyph sheet in TR4 or none at all. The absolute worst ones are the red cloak for the suffocation room on one floor, drinking a poison potion to get past the green poo monsters on the next one and remembering to keep a lead box you find during the second “boss fight” because the key you get after the final boss much later to escape is radioactive and cooks you in seconds as soon as you pick it up.

A young co-worker and I were tag-teaming the PC version of this game on a rather under powered laptop back when the game was first released. We had to run it at lower graphics resolution and fewer effects to keep the laptop from catching fire. Literally! As a result, in some rooms it was very difficult if not impossible to see exactly where Lara needed to jump, crawl, or move due to poor lighting or wall textures that all looked the same on the PC screen. So, we got stuck in this one particular area for the longest time, but we both refused to use an online walk-through website for help. It was a matter of principle for us. Another co-worker had the PS1 version and was racing to complete the game before my friend and I could finish it on the PC. We asked him if got past the area we were stuck in, and he said he had no problem. I asked him if he used the walk-through guide for help, and he said he hadn't, but I didn't believe him. Anyway, my buddy finally figured out how to get us through the room, and I eventually got the other co-worker to admit he HAD indeed used the walk-through guide more than once to gain an advantage over us. The PS1 beat the PC to the finish line, but only with help from the guide. I have fond memories of completing this game with my friend and doing it without any guide help. Many "all-nighters" made it quite frustrating at times, but also lots of fun team work and a sense of accomplishment at the end. Thanks for the cool look back.

These are some of the best reviews for the classics yet. Can't wait for part 2! By the way, the flash grenades DO have a purpose, but it's only useful if you're hording health: If you use it on human enemies, it blinds them for a few seconds, allowing you to get some free hits on them. It doesn't work on animals or supernatural enemies, however, and obviously does zero damage.
@SteveOfWarr

Thank you so much! Honestly I figured that would be the case for when to use the flash grenades, but I never found the right moment to use them ans was able to do fine without them, so just never bothered switching to them. 😅

According to the book 20 Years of Tomb Raider, they went with the unskippable tutorial as they hit the Room Editor's map size limit for TR3's mansion, meaning they couldn't grow it anymore. It was planned to return in Angel of Darkness but cut, as was an early story idea to have Lara burn down the manor prior to going to Paris (sound familiar?). TRAE was going to finally have an engine capable of growing the mansion even more than TR3 in a new engine similar to but not the same as the AOD one (I used to think the TRAE/Free Running engine was the AOD one but Core confirmed it wasn't). However in the only existing (so far) leaked build, the most new areas included were a new section of the gym for practicing Lara's TRAE moves and a large unfinished area that could have been yet another gym room or something else. Planned areas included the outdoor areas (can't remember if the assault course was going to be included too) and a treasure room that was basically the TRA one crossed with a bonus level select menu, complete with a laptop for trading secrets with other players if you needed rarer ones someone else had. in TR4, it's also worth mentioning that if you get all secrets in Ankor Wat, you're forced to take a harder route through the race unless you exploit a glitch with the final secret at the path fork. This other route not only feels longer and is harder to proceed if Von Croy gets too far ahead (such as breaking a bridge or closing a door like the other path) but the early pits on this route have spikes in them. You also need to make your save on this level before you trigger the cutscene at the start of the race. If you save in the middle of the race and reload, you're locked into the losing cutscene, presumably the game thinking you're cheating.

The grenades do no damage due to a weird quirk on the PC Port. On the PS1 version, they DO damage you, which also means Lara's own grenades damage her. There is a fan-fix for it but its still a strange thing.

So it needs to be stated right away that this is MY favorite of the PS1 Tomb Raider games. It's extremely story driven and the amount of detail in the levels as well as the many new mechanics make the game feel like an entirely new beast compared to its predecessors. I love that it's condensed into a singular location rather than globetrotting since it allows the location to become it's own character. The Egyptian tombs in this game are very dark and feel menacing whereas in the previous games, since you're only in one location for four or five levels, there's not enough time to develop character for the levels. The music I love personally. The main title theme is sets the tone for the game incredibly well. While the original TR theme will always be iconic, I can say that after that (and perhaps the Venice theme in TR2) the Last Revelation theme is very impressive in it's own right. Yes, the tutorial is annoying but there actually IS a way to skip Von Croy's dialouge (select button I think) so you can get through it in under 10 minutes if you know the layout and what needs to be done.

I never get burned out by Egyptian aesthetic BTW, I didn't have enough of it in TR1... also playing TR2 I thought we need a game ENTIRELY set in Far Eastern temples and we got one (2013 reboot)... that said, you have Khmer style in Ankgor Wat, Hellenic architecture in Alexandria and horror modern city in Cairo in TLR. It's varied enough in that regard, I just wish we got more dress-up for each level like in 2 or 3 or 5.

I was afraid of being "burnt out by the Egyptian aesthetic", but it didn't have that effect on me at all. I remember thinking "oh no is this all in one location? thats going to get same-y" - but they really visually distinguish the levels so well. It felt refreshing every time they set up a new aesthetic. And i remember entering some of these locations for the first time and just going "oh wow".

It's funny how the story mirrors the story in Legend. Von Croy has a valid reason to be mad at Lara for abandoning him and never trying to rescue him in the same way as she did to Amanda in that game. I mean clearly they both survived so the attitude of, "oh they're obviously dead, let's move on with our lives and never return." was probably pretty hurtful.

Fun thing is to watch the scene where Von Croy escapes on the Helicopter, seated on a very awkward manner (34:09), i noticed it in the good old times while playing in the playstation and until this day i cannot unsee.

I've noticed this came out the same year as the mummy and they share lots of similarities: egyptian setting, a resurrection ritual, death beetles, the ending (collapse) etc...

I was surprised you didn't enjoy this one as much as I did. Like a lot of other fans this is by far my favourites. Being all set in one location and not having end level stats makes it feel like a huge adventure and less segmented. Lara's arrogance and recklessness finally getting the better of her and having a storyline with some more depth helps it stand out from its predecessors. Finally the puzzles are just miles better and far more involved than the previous games. I do miss Croft Manor, the menu ring and McCree's soundtrack, but the aforementioned high points help alleviate this. Great review anyway!

Loved this game along with TR 1 2 and 3. The puzzles in it were tough but rewarding, the music, visuals for the time, atsomspere, locations, core gameplay, and storyline were really solid minus no laras home and some frustrating sections but o erall great game. Very nice reviews by the way really enjoyed them.

Steve Of Warr, This game was the very first Tomb Raider game I’ve ever played, and I remember playing the 1st level which is the tutorial level, which has cutscenes that you can’t skip, (Example starting at 5:07, and later at 5:35) It just made me say with absolute rage: GET ON WITH IT!!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡 Anyway, I’m getting a treasure chest for the Tomb Raider games which I’m collecting! Cause I’m a huge fan of the chest that you used for your games! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Finally, I’m wishing you all the best of luck for Part 6: Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I'm glad you mentioned the length of this game: I was absolutely fed up with the egyptian setting after a while. That didn't make the task of finishing it easier, especially with all the "moon logic" involved in some of the puzzles. The iron hook you had to notice on a wall to obtain a key to the ruins in alexandria was one the many bullshit moments that would have forced me to stop my playthrough at the time, since I didn't have access to the internet in 1999. That being said, the quality of your work is very consistent; I can't wait to see part two!

I feel like I remember the side to side swimming in TRII at least, if you held down the walk button while above water and swimming to the side. I applaud all the work the developers did to distinguish the levels within the one setting, but I personally couldn’t wait to get out of Egypt unfortunately. Not to say the game doesn’t have tons to offer, but I was ready for a fresh setting as they had done with previous games. It was part of the charm, looking forward to what would come next.

All I can say in her defence is that at least when she realises she done fucked up, she immediately sets out to put things right! Although, one thing that always bugged me about this game is that when she shoots the rocket launcher goon, she actually has different handguns to when she held up her guide... AND IN THE VERY SAME LEVEL AS WELL!! What the actual hell!! Also, yay for Exodia! Fitting too!

About the tutorial, if you collect all the red skulls throughout "basic training", Mr. Von Gemany McGerman Croy takes you to an alternate path with harder platforming and real traps (like spikes) instead of just harmless shallow pits and pools, just something I found out after replaying that level so many times without realizing that you could skip cutscenes that will be forever burned into my mind (MAKE IT STOP, PLEASE! MAKE IT STOOOOP!"). Also, that gun vs sword joke instantly reminded me of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYKuo6B6gducoNE Really enjoying your videos, Steve. Just the right mix of nostalgia and fair criticism (usually it's either "perfect game, no flaws" or "20-minute rant") and they have me laughing all the way.

Is Lara going to save you... without you even knowing you need rescuing? :D This was somehow more critical than I expected, although I can't say it was often unfair. I didn't think much about TR4 until I finally (finally!) finished it several months ago and I kinda love it since then. It does have a much more cinematic feel I haven't noticed years back, when I was just frustrated about not knowing where to go (and considering when I first bought the game almost 20 years ago... I didn't even understand English, so yeah). Death beetles! Ugh, yes. Also I actually like the guys with the bullet-proof swords because while they take longer to kill, they don't hurt me at all (unless I come closer or keep weapons holstered for too long and they pull out their uzis). Well, this was a lot of fun! Didn't expect it to be in two parts, but TR4 really is quite long so it makes sense. Looking forward to part 2!
