For anyone wondering who the Paul in my latest video was, he was a friend I very recently found out took his own life due to ongoing mental health problems. We both spent over 3 years at Film School together but sadly I lost contact with him for many years. I wanted to dedicate this video to him because I wanted to honour a person who helped inspire a lot of what I do today with editing and filmmaking, but also to try and raise awareness for people with mental health issues. People like Paul should never feel like suicide is the only option, no matter how hopeless you may feel there is always someone on the other end of a text or phone call willing to listen to you and try and help. Please look after yourselves, your loved ones and stay safe ♥️ t.co/ZW2pAZGs8a

My condolences for the loss of your friend. Losing a friend to suicide must have been a heavy shock. I am sorry for your loss, and hope you are doing ok Steve. You are absolutely right with what you say in this statement. I’ve struggled with depression on and off since mid teens and it can sometimes feel like there is no way out other than to end your life. Of course that is not the answer, but when we are at our lowest it can feel like we are trapped and there is no alternative. There is always someone to talk to, whether it be a friend, family member or stranger. I volunteered with the Samaritans for a couple of years to try and give back and help others. I met some amazing people involved in that organisation (and indeed many organisations like it), and they do it purely because they care for people and want to help. Please reach out to someone if you are feeling like this. You are not alone, and remember it’s ok to not be ok. Love and best wishes to you Steve Btw the video was awesome!

The Thailand section of this game to me was absolute perfection. Possibly the first time since the OG 1996 TR and TR2 that I felt some challenge and also the beauty of a location! The old games did so well whilst being limited. So seeing this was wonderful. This game was certainly too short. I know not many like it but I feel underworld was the start of an amazing mix of old and new.. then we got the reboot that was to me too heavy on the human combat and not a true Tomb Raider experience .. love watching as always xx

I’m so glad you talked about the move animations in Underworld! Ever since the game came out I never understood why Lara went from moving so smoothly in Legend and Anniversary to quite stiff and awkward looking in this one. Just like the swan dive; I always thought she looked like someone holding a barbie doll and making it ‘dive’ without moving any of the limbs because she looked so rigid now.

@@MistahJay7 in fairness the wall jumping and climbing animations are great looking, a lot more realistic compared to L and A. But I’m still not a fan of the live capture animations for Lara in this one. 13:30 Thanks for noticing this issue with Lara's animation! I don't understand why so many people though, including you, call it a "nitpick". To me, the acrobatics and the platforming of these games has always been one of the main reasons to play them. I have always loved being in awe at looking and, well, performing from the keyboard the amazing jumps and climbs, and I always wanted them to be as realistic as possible. It's one of the things Tomb Raider: Legend has done so well. Lara's jump height and length is pretty realistic, she no longer boosts 4 meters in the air, and her moves still look beautiful and mesmerizing. I mean, of course it's not "complete realism", it's still platforming, and it's forgivable to see her sliding the zip lines with her bare hands for example. But even in TR:L and TR:A, while the acrobatics were really good, they still were a bit junky, especially when combining jumps to bars and poles. Especially when you compare them to, say, Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time, where they did a really good job on how fluid all the acrobatics look, even if confined to basically only 4 directions. So, seeing Lara's animations in the Underworld was the most disappointing change they did. And not only the moves look junky, like you mentioned, where the game seems to skip a few frames and shows no connecting animation between two different moves, I hate how unnaturally fast she moves. When she moves across a ledge, she doesn't look like a believable human, but more like an insect rapidly climbing across a wall. It's really sad and surprising to see these flaws and at the same time see that the developers worked hard on making some other aspects of the game more realistic than in the previous games. And even the free-climbing move was obviously created to make the surrounding nature feel less arcade-like. This game is full of controversy, both story-wise and gameplay-wise, and the issues start right at the foundations.
@MistahJay72 ай бұрын
Completely disagree. The parkour animaton in this game is easily the best in any Tomb Raider game The shifting in weight between jumps feels great and not Janky at all idk what you're talking about.
@everdimension2 ай бұрын
@ well just look at how animations are transitioned between each other. It's as abrupt as it possible can be, giving the game an arcade and unpolished feeling. For comparison, look at how animations are transitioned in the Prince of Persia: SoT games

What I really appreciate this game for is how much it sticks to the idea of Underworld, especially in the level design. ALL the levels in this game start, end, or have a part where you go deep underground, and towards the end you mostly fight creatures who like the dark, like spiders or the Thralls. Many tomb raider games have these sort of levels, but Underworld's just felt a lot more thought out and thematic.

Laying sick in my bed, re-watching the retrospectives, I realized I never dropped a comment on this one? How did that happened... no idea. Anyway, better late then never I guess! I might be one of the very few people who actually like this game. I have replayed it so many times I feel like I can do a speed-run with my eyes closed. I guess I am a sucker for half baked, unpolished and unfinished games, considering AOD is my fav. TR Underworld had a lot of potential in it. It was visually stunning, there were so many new elements . Lara was sweating, and the sweat would wash the dirt off her skin, she was making different faces and even making a pain grimace at some occasions. Heck even her ass would clench when she draw out the guns! I also have a soft spot for her shoulder muscle definition here, it is just beautiful. Her outfits and equipment were very bad-ass looking, especially the ATV design is so... cool! Her new climbing and shooting skills were so cool too! The environment was awesome! The locations were interesting. She was able to interacting with the vegetation around her, which was so new. In general I really really liked the game. Yeah all the negative points you make are on point, but ... dont cancel me ... TRU is my favorite from the LAU era... yes i said it :D Great video as always, looking forward for TR2013 retrospective! Love ya Phteven! OH and btw, just to correct you, on PC, if you collect all the relics and finish the game on hard, there is a unlockable bathing suit, which is white and can be used only in the underwater levels.

Man I really need to revisit this game dont I? As an old time fan of the series, I was so beyond hyped up for this game and counting the days to when it'd come out. I had really liked Legend but overall felt disappointed in its level design and overall length and pace, which felt way too foreign and simplistic as fan of the classics, then came Anniversary which gave me faith they were working it out to get some of the classic magic back into this new interpretation of the series (still to this day, minus some gripes and flaws, I consider Anni to be an excellent remake of a gamig classic). I got the game almost as soon as it came out, one of the first times in my life I had done that as I was far too young for the earlier ones to get as they released. That being said, to this day I remember not liking this game much at all and feeling betrayed and very bitter towards it, but I all I remember was that feeling of frustration and anger at it by the time I finished it, not sure how I had felt about it for the rest of its length, and looking back at it, I remember for hte most part really enjoying it, though a lot of the bugs, visual bugs and controls inconsistencies frustrating me. But watching this video reminded me of why I ended up with such a negative outlook on it, the final stretch of the game, Avalon/Helheim really dragged down the whole game for me, the way lara just randomly comes across her mom in a random room and how that whole scene is executed felt so disappointing, lazy and like a total cop-out of one of the main driving forces of the new trilogy's story, Amanda at times felt kinda tacked on to the story, like I get why shes there but her role is kinda relegated in a very awkward way to me, and Natla, as much as I like her as a nemesis for Lara (I think for being the very first villain of a legendary series like TR, she deserves that title) is given a twist that felt like it kinda undermined everything that came before, especially her whole Atlantean background, when she reveals THIS was her final goal all along, rather than just a new scheme she concocted after her last one being shot down by Lara. Then to top it all off, the final level is just a complete confusing and frustrating shitshow, without a proper bossfight (unlike anniversary), where LAra literally sees her at a distance and fucking yeets the hammer on her head and thats it, she leaves and game is over, it also felt so anticlimactic and lame. With those mixed feelings in place I then also had to find out I Was missing content and story for this game and after desperately trying to find how to get it, I learn that Im just straight up unable to because its exclusive to a console I didnt have, split into two separate purchases in a foreign currency that I'd never get my parents to buy to me because exchange would also make it super expensive (let alone the fact that I didnt even ahve the console). All of this completely killed my lasting feeling for this game, but after watching this video, I think it deserves a second chance, I might find some renewed affection for it, though I still think overall how the story was handled was a major letdown for me and I dont think there's much fixing to that. Amazing video as always, thanks for these retrospectives! I cant wait to reach this game in my ongoing replay of the whole series!

I just started watching your TR retrospectives a few weeks ago and I have to say, this has become one of my favourite retrospective series on this platform. The pacing is superb - the way you go back and forth, from informative narration to fantastic British humour and back, it's unbelievably entertaining to watch. None of these videos ever feel anywhere near as long as the runtime says they are. After finishing the Angel of Darkness retrospective and seeing how you went out of your way to end the video by giving that game an alternate/happier ending, these aren't just some excellently produced video essays, these are the greatest love letters anyone has ever expressed to the Tomb Raider franchise in video format. I just discovered your channel two days ago and I kinda binged the entire TR Retrospective series. Very, very well done. I dont understand why you have so few subs for such amazing work. I hope the algorithm picks you up someday and you get the exposure you rightly deserve. Keep on the grind man!

Finished watching your TR Restrospective after it being my religious videos on the latest weekends, Steve, and my gosh!! Congratulations for your huge dedication, all effort put on the making of these videos. Tomb Raider community is such a precious jewel that has the best people involved. I also want to thank you for the TRU + DLC, I've never player the additional chapters and you and the people involved are allowing me to do so. Really looking forward to see your thoughts on the Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy!! Top-notch as always and always.

Just wanted to let you know that i havent watched this yet as I'm at work, never the less - I wholeheartly know what epic journey of a video awaits me. I thank you in advance. I've been excited to this moment for months! Thank you dearly Steve ❤💪🙏

I actually loved Underworld but I understand why it was rebooted after this. The whole feel of Tomb Raider had gotten mundane especially with Uncharted coping everything Legend did along with other franchises. I am most excited for you video on Shadow, that game is severally underrated by this fandom especially with how they have Lara say farewell to her parents and the amazing dlcs that flesh out side characters

Great video. I remember vividly watching the first review videos of this game when it was released and being impressed with the graphics. I only played it a few years later and I don´t know why ... but it still remains one of my favourite TR games.

Firstly, I wanna thank you for yet another amazing retrospective video but most of all I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for making it possible to play the Underworld DLCs on PC. I never had an Xbox so you made one of my childhood dreams about being able to play as Lara's doppelganger come true 🙏

Ive been very late but thank you a lot for this TR recap series. I enjoyed it so much!!! Its so sad that there are no more good games left to review😂. I watched all videos from tr from you over the last days and it was so great. It was comedy and information at the same time. Thanks thanks thanks!!!❤ This needs so much more attention for all your work ❤

Besides playing like the Tomb Raider version of the Dark Prince in Prince of Persia Two Thrones, Bacon Lara 2.0/Dopplehoe really is Lara’s Shadow: her primary power is Chaos Control.

Tomb Raider Underworld is one of my favorite games, and the trilogy it was a part of, is to me, the best of the Tomb Raider series. I would love for the next Tomb Raider games to return to this level design and development sensibilities.

Steve, thank you so much for that DLC bundle. I know the emulator has been available, but I'm just so IT challenged, I never even bothered to attempt to put it together. I've waited 14 years for this. I can't wait to try them this weekend.

I hope he covers the Lara Croft spin-off titles someday, those being Guardian of Light and the Tomb of Osiris. Those are excellent isometric action puzzle games, and as far as I can tell, they're part of the Gen 2/Legend continuity. It's kinda interesting how the Gen 3/Reboot and the Gen 2 continuity co-exist despite having nothing common. You don't often see two entirely different continuities existing at the same time.

I hope he covers the Game Boy spin-offs.

While it's true that having two continuities of a series going on at the same time isn't exactly common its not unheard of. Sega had three incarnations of Sonic going on in parallel at one point, and Capcom ran at least two completely separate Megaman series simultaneously a few times.

Great review as always! I always come back to your reviews and re-watch them. About dual aiming: Core Design actually tried to implement that in the first Tomb Raider game, but apparently the feature was too confusing to actually use during normal gameplay, so the team decided to omit the idea in the end. Some pre-alpha tech demos show how Lara can dual aim. So it's nice to see that they actually included that feature even if it took 12 years to do so.

Thanks for yet another brilliant video Steve! I really look forward to each new entry in your series. Underworld will always hold a special place in my heart because it's the Tomb Raider game that made me interested to try the newer games as well, with all of my previous experiences having been with Core era games. From there onwards I then checked out Legend and Anniversary, and though my allegiance will always be with the Core era Lara, I do enjoy the LAU trilogy as well. It has some fantastic moments: the whole Thailand section is absolutely top tier Tomb Raider content for me, and the Mexico section is just brimming with atmosphere and a sense of exploration. I also think the Mediterranean episode with the underwater temple and the boat battle is a great opener for the game. But the rest? I don't know, it's all kind of gray and corridor-y, lacking a clear personality and vision. I really feel like the game is quite rushed, and in some ways it feels almost unfinished... One particular thing that annoys me a lot is how incredibly flimsy the connection with the Legend storyline feels. Like, I think we can all agree that Legend did a great job at establishing an interesting mythos with lots of little details - and enter Underworld, where literally all of that is thrown to the bin with the whole story being completely about the Northern mythos and Natla, with all of the Arthurian imaginery and the whole monomyth idea ignored. I don't know if this bothers anyone else, but it always felt like a weird choice for me.

Hey, Steve! I must admit that it took me almost a year to actually watch this video, mainly because I didn't want to see your take on this Era of Tomb Raider games come to a close. The Legend Timeline is probably my favourite of all the Tomb Raider Timelines our there. However, now that I have finished watching it, I have to tell you that you have clearly outdone yourself with this one, yet again! This video was a Masterpiece! I grew up on Legend, Anniversary and Underworld, playing it with my cousin during our Summer breaks back when we were still in school, so it holds a special place in my heart. So, this might be late to say, but you've done a marvelous job with this one! Keep it up! And a big thank you for sharing your creativity and providing great entertainment! Can't wait for what comes next! 👏💖💐😍🤩
