I was born in 96' so I was too young to enjoy the classic games when they came out. It's our heroine's backstory, and how we see a softer side to her. The level design and how varying in atmosphere they are. How Lara's moves blend seamlessly like flowing water. The motorbike sections that make you feel like the ultimate badass! It's Zip and Alistair's banter as she's tackling the tombs and their clever puzzles. The swan dive in Ghana. That last scene with Lara screaming in Amanda's face. The dress in Tokyo. That soundtrack...THAT Croft Manor music. 😍 Tomb Raider Legend is my second favourite video game of all time; it's legendary in name and nature. Seeing this game being discussed makes me happy. The Crystal Dynamics era wasn't perfect but it was fun. 46:55 Amanda doesn't try to sabotage anything, but as time is running out (and the whole thing will explode if the sword isn't pulled out) she shouts to Lara to pull the sword out instead because she may be too weak to do it herself. Lara's mother mistakingly thinks Amanda is talking to her and to protect young Lara, she does what Amanda says and pulls out the sword, making the whole thing explode.
@claudejunkers43482 жыл бұрын
Wow you're a genius. I actually never thought of it this way, although taking out the sword would transport Lara to "Avalon" so does that mean Amanda wanted Lara in Avalon from good will or just to screw her over since if u have played tomb raider underworld you'd know what going to Avalon means.
@Nexils2 жыл бұрын
@@claudejunkers4348 I'm not sure. Maybe she didn't know what Avalon would be like, even though she knew it would explode for some reason and I think she wanted someone to use it and didn't mind it being Lara if she couldn't do it herself? Either way Amanda probably didn't even see Amelia since young Lara didn't see older Lara in the flashback, either...

I do like Zip and Allistair, I think all they had to do to fix them, would be to make the puzzle hits an optional thing like in Anniversary with Lara's Journal/Underworld's hints (and have a few more moody bits where they're not in-contact.), they talk a bit too much/spoil the simplistic puzzles but they kinda over-corrected in Underworld. I also really like how Turrets are completely optional but super-effective in Legend (Which is how they should be in shooters.) and in general, while lacking in the maze-like environments, I can't deny Legend's combat is one of the best in the series.

Great job, Steve, and it's perfect that you released this on Lara's birthday, February 14th. That said, I feel that you hit the nails on the heads where your review of this game was concerned, and you definitely highlighted the pros and cons. I remember many fun times playing it on PC back in the day, and I completely agree with you that Keeley Hawes is perhaps the definitive version of Lara Croft because her performance embodied all the aspects of the character, and she really made the role her own. Though for me, Jonell Elliot will always be the definitive version of the Core Design era Lara, but if you want a good balance between the two, Jenni Milward perfectly incorporates both versions of Lara and she's voiced numerous fan projects. That being said, for me, one of my biggest gripes about the game is that it was way too short and too linear, and I know you touched upon this in your video, but I believe it would have been better if there were more levels in each part of the world we traveled to and that said levels were longer, much like the Core games. I also liked how Crystal Dynamics gave Lara a more fleshed out personality as well as some much needed character development. She was given a backstory that more people could relate to (losing a parent at a young age) and could thus generate emotional resonance in the players. The Core Lara was a straight up hardcore badass who didn't let us into her personal thoughts and emotions too much, and I feel that by doing that, Core sort of pigeonholed themselves into a character that couldn't really develop much further until the Angel of Darkness came along. It was the same problem that Sean Connery's James Bond had and why Connery wanted to leave since Thunderball - the character was effectively static in terms of development and was going nowhere. Either way, I really liked the video and I eagerly await the next installment. :-)

I think the reason the bike controls are weird on PC is because you are supposed to play using the mouse and keyboard, in which case accelerate is the up cursor key, just like running. They didn't expect PC players to be using a controller, which is OK because when I was growing up, nobody did. (Nobody I knew anyway) It's also why the grapple swing and environmental hazard prompts are a fancy symbol and a warning exclamation mark respectively: those controls can be rebound so they need something that covers all possible button configurations, whereas on console it's always A Button & Y Button or triangle button & X button depending on whether you're on Xbox & Xbox 360 or PS2, PS3 & PSP.

TRL is one of my favourite games but yeah, the last Bolivia Level was really short. If the game were to be remade, I would extend this level to be less of a boss fight only but a full on final level. Pretty much have all the same areas again but changed in a way to encompass “You’ve been here before, you know where to go, but things are different this time”. Like for example in the games very first area, perhaps some enemy patrols and structures to let the player know that the enemy is full on expecting them, could provide an opportunity to take alternate routes instead of old ones and make use of the Sword as well.

Really good review of the game. For me this LAU era is peak Tomb Raider. It has the fluid, tight, enjoyable controls, good overarching story, and a badass, likeable Lara. And yeah, her looks? Let me tell you, when I played it, the 19-20 year old me didn't mind it at all :D The next gen graphics though... I liked the looks of it, but it was so bugged on PC... Eh, still I played most of it on that option, for the nicer effects and textures, even if that graphics didn't have the wet clothes drying up effect (that was a nice touch btw). AS I remember it had less problems on my old computer at the time, than on my new one when I replayed recently. And now, I'm waiting your next videos about Anniversary and Underworld. Keep it up! I’m very impressed... My Aunt in her 17s introduced me to Tomb Raider saga with this title when I was 7 years old, great game, it took me like 6 months to defeat it ! I’m still loving it. Ps: you covered everything ! The longest video I’ve ever seen about the game 😂♥️ Keep it up.

Just another perfect video. It's always so enjoyable to see such a modern take on this classic series. Watched the video all in one go and I'm really shocked by the effort that went into it. 10/10

I appreciate you acknowledging the irony of Toby leaving Core in part because of the over-sexualized marketing to then implement the deep cut in her causal outfit, the Japan dress, and ultimately, those bikinis. Maybe it's different because it was "his choice" and not EIDOS. In all fairness, being sexy doesn't mutually exclude being smart, brave, and cunning... but it does seem a bit tacky. Better to make it official than having it modded by the community anyway? Hell, I don't know haha (And calling out NorskChick got me to laugh, too.)

this is probably my favorite TR game I remember this game on my PC back in 2006, enabling "next-gen" settings and just seeing the graphics, blew me away.

Personally I hated the swimming controls on the Playstation. In the old games it was so easy just to point her in the direction you wanted and push the jump button to make her go. On this one, pressing a one button to dive and another to surface seemed pointlessly complicated and I never got used to it. Finishing a swimming section was ALWAYS a relief.

Found you channel yesterday and binged watched all of your Tomb Raider retrospective. Grew up with TR 2 as my first, used to watch my dad play it when I was 5 before my bedtime.

To be honest, Tomb Raider 3 and Legend are my favorite Tomb Raider games. They both just always gave me great times, and still do. I actually am replaying TR 3 again after I finished TR Legend. They are simply so much fun.

As a longtime TR fan, I was astonished by how fresh yet respectful to its origins TR Legend felt to me. The bikini thing? That leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but there is still plenty to be praised in this game. I had to click on the video as soon as I saw it. Thank you for covering this series.

Legend is one of my all time favourites. I'd played the other games when I was a bit to young to 'get' them, but this one came out at the perfect time for me and cemented a love for the franchise for me. Fond memories of working through all the time trials with my brother to unlock every outfit.
