So would using Elons Starlink have less hops on tracert ? Rather than going thru some of the under sea cables ? I'm asking because I've heard Elon say that Starlink will have less latency when it is fully operational. I never understood how the satellites system would be faster around the globe.

@David Bombal I have never been able to talk to anyone include a CCIE from a training vendor, who knows how to configure the hostname resolution that you see when you do a trace route. Do you know how that aspect of traceroute works and can be configured?

he certainly does, he created a revolving net of satellites in low earth orbit to reduce latency, geostationary orbits are just too slow :)

@@folkishappalachian6827 mac is built on a hybrid of mach-a and BSD and a object-oriented driver layer Apple made called Darwin which is released as open source software under APSL. The drivers are proprietary. OS X/macos used to ship with X11 window system support, not sure if it still does and there is a command line package manager, called Homebrew, that has a lot of linux software ported in it's repo.

I live in the US on the east coast and realized if I do a tracert on a European IP address that I'll get to see the hop going under the ocean. It was obvious too! Went from 35ms to New York and then from New York it took the trans-atlantic route which was a whopping 950ms! I crossed the Atlantic ocean and back in literally one second. Really makes you appreciate the undersea cables that keep the world connected nearly instantaneously! Shout out to Twelve99!

Oh yeah, AFAIK he works as an engineer mostly. When I was a truck driver I would deliver metals to his Tesla place regularly. He knows his stuff like you do, good sir. After moving to IT, Web Design and Development and cyber security this video is amazing like all your content is. And I understand it better. Network Chuck, you and the others are truly changing the game for so many tech fields. I have a 9.6K sub channel for gaming. I wish I could turn it into a way to teach web design and development. Hi David, Great video thanks. True story. I began getting an error opening my email. Unable to reach bla bla bla. I tried ping, failed. I tried tracert, the trace got all the way down the East coast to somewhere in NJ or PA (I'm in MA), then the tracert starts failing. I provided all this to ISP, they of course did the reset the router, change your pw, etc, and all the usual non SME garbage. After a month, yes a month, I got the Attorney General involved. The ISP then woke up. I ended up with 2 techs at my house with them assisting. Both were now line guys, but had been networking engineers prior, so they understood the tracert. One guy went outside, changed something and I was able to open my email. He came back in my house and the other guy asked, What did you change? "The ground loop on the cable coming into the house." The 3 of us stared at each other like WTH? I said, that's impossible, the other guy concurred. Obviously, a PHY layer issue at my house did NOT fix the issue. The only thing I can believe, so I can sleep at night, is that when they changed the ground loop, they reprovisioned the circuit/account and that shook something out perhaps in access lists or such. True story.

this bring a good point of why we are not using mac addressing for routing ... it does not have TTL ... and yeah a big section of switching is to prevent loops coz frames live forever

Hey Dave! I just want to say thank you so much for your time and effort, my gratitude is profound. In particular is the emphasis on details you put into the videos that include guests whom range in a variety of disciplines. Specifically you make sure to ask your guest,( very subtly I might add), To either explain it again or explain the reasons why things are being done and with what outcome response. Beginning keyboard smashers like me get super frustrated when we get instructions but have no no Genesis to base the said action on. It may be irrelevant to some but to others we really value the extra time you take in your videos. Hello david, i am studying youre ccna course on udemy and its great. ive done about 40% of it and been following the cert guide material as well . now ive reached section 47 where you start DHCP and its not matching the book's subject respect. ipv4 routing has been finished and the next topic is OSPF. DHCP is covered in the second volume of the book. should i stick with what you provide and study DHCP or go on with the book and watch OSPF material you've put at end of your course ? I would like to emphasize this to all the aspiring Security, Networking and Linux engineers. Knowing how traceroute works is important and it will highly likely be asked of you in an interview. When i was in an interview for a security analyst position i was asked about traceroute. When i was in an interview for a linux system administrator position i was again asked about traceroute. It is a very helpful command that is good to understand.

once PC set the TTL 1 first router kills the packet by decrementing the TTL=0 and sends TTL expired message backs to PC second packet , PC will set the TTL=2 , R1 accespts the same and decrement the TTL to 1 and send it to R2 . on receiving this packet R2 will decrement the TTL to 0 and send back to R1 and R1 will send it back again to PC . is it correct flow ?
