Glad to see an earlier reveal and for some of the harder hit palms it's better to unwrap as to prevent further mold issues. I'm glad most palms did well considering and good job!

Yea the mold/fungus only attacks dead tissue till it gets too strong and can attack healthy

Thanks well I was hoping those 2-3 'ugly' ones would only have outside row fronds burnt

Well done at protecting your palms 👐. I have lost so many this winter, more to come when it warms up and the truth comes out. Might have to go to the extreme you do over there our winters keep getting colder. Great video

Thanks for the update. It's turning out to be a real learning experience for me as this is the first full winter with my palms planted in the ground. The good news for me are the Needle Palm and the Sabal Minor. Both look good with virtually no damage to the Needle Palm and a little bit of frost damage on the Sabal Minor. All the other's may be lost - will have to wait until spring to determine- these include 3 small Trachys, 1 Sawmill and 1 Chinese Fan Palm here in SE MI zone 6A.

All but S. minor and needle will need protection all winters (Foamboard box). The S. minor and needle will need to be located well and may need protection some

@@tntropics That's exactly correct and what has happened here. Both the Needle and S. Minor have the best locations around the house - both with south facing walls and the Needle also with East facing wall and protection from the west with an evergreen bush so kind of in a nook. Both had some protection - S Minor with Foam board triangle and Needle with mini greenhouse and "no heat for either". On the other hand all the other palms (3 trachy's all small, Sabal 6 inches, Chinese Fan Palm and Sawmill both at about 3 gallon) had the same triangle foam boards and also Xmas lights for heat however I did take the protection of all the foam boards for all off (at various times when temps reached the 40's and nights in the 30's which sometimes dipped down into the low 20's ) which may have been my mistake as it hurt all the others but not the S. Minor - it was exposed unprotected down into the low 20's and no damage. The mini greenhouse for the Needle worked perfectly - it has a window flap that I open when it gets above freezing and have left it (mini greenhouse) set up since mid November. Going forward my concentration is primarily going to be focused "solely on Needle Palms and S Minors only" with mini greenhouses that I think I got on Etsy (for 1 Needle) for the winter times here in zone 6A.

Glad to see most of your palms did well., Next weekend we expect another single digit overnight temps! I usually leave my palm boxes till March 21, since I'm able to open them on nice days , keeps them dry and keeps the winds away! Have never had àny fungal problems yet! Looking forward to your garden this next coming season ,God bless Jose's tropical garden 🙏♥️🌴🌴

Yea you don't want to take those boxes off till you're sure the cold is gone. They are a great way to protect for sure.

Well it looks like they all survived... even the ugly. Good job. I think I lost one small one but it might have green in the center. It was only about 2 feet and was not growing well even in the summer

Thanks yea the frost cloth doesn't take the 30-50mph winds well LOL. I knew there would be damage but thought only the very outside fronds would be fried. Usually the cold is on a still night.

I have just pulled one of these from beneath my hedge. To my knowledge it ha been horizontal since we purchased the house 5 years ago. It is around 8 feet long with several leaf fans. The plant has been laying sideways along the ground beneath the hedge. We decided to pull it out to see if we could erect it in the garden. When it was finally dragged out we found that it has obviously been cut down as at the base is basically a trunk about 9 inches in diameter, no roots, just a sawn through trunk. The plant appears healthy with about a dozen fan like leaves. I assume it's been getting its nutrients from the main trunk being in contact with the ground as it has no apparent roots? Should we just dig a hole and put it in, or should we shorten the trunk a little first?

It does. Even the ones in Bulgaria along the Black Sea shore are wrapped every winter. Every variety of Trachycarpus will be damaged at temperatures or windchils like the ones he mentioned.
