I love VR, but when 40% of people who use it get motion sick, it's not going to go mainstream. Also they have to continue to reduce the size and increase the comfort, ideally down to about a pair of goggles, if that is possible -- and you have full color pass-through with AR, then at that point it might be something. But I think AR is going to be what hits big - when you can just put on some glasses and get information overlays everywhere, people are going to go nuts for it. But VR, because it needs to fully take up your FOV, I'm not sure it's ever going to fully take off. Also, while motion sickness isn't as bad as it was with, say, Oculus DK1, it's still an issue for most games where you move, and I don't know if there is a solution for it.

I love the desk space in VR HOWEVER they need to add support for non rectangular desks, my desk is a corner desk with a rectangular desk off to the side for a multifunctional gaming/vr/music production workspace. If they just let you draw the desk shape like the guardian space that would be amazing. Maybe once it's out of experimental and into mainstream they'll support this

I am really excited about the prospect of working in VR as an extension and improvement for WFH. The ability to remove distractions by working in VR environment, and for keeping work and home separate, as you would log in and setup, then logout and remove when done working, or taking a break, thus creating separation. Also you control what you show in VR so much better then in Zoom and the presence of being with other people is better then Zoom. I think the comfort and power, is a few years out, and the time to get companies and workplaces to integrate it even longer, but I think VR and AR are going to make remote work even more viable for even more people.

VR could well work for a lot, but I don't think it's about using and interacting with a standard 2D desktop environment. If anything, it needs to feel more analogue era again, which would be a interesting full circle to come in tech. For example, if doing video editing, literally feeling like interacting with your foundation clips as "film rolls" that you can stitch together. Interacting with a tiny mouse pointer seems silly in this world where you don't have the same limits. CAD could go back to using tools of mechanical drawing, etc, but of course it fuses the precision and capabilities of machines for precise measurements, etc. This would be a fundamental shift, and I don't think it succeeds if we just plan to interact with 2D desktop setups in Virtual.

I started in high tech in 1978 and just retired. I have seen many collaboration tool come and go. The one thing I know is that I am bad at predicting which have staying power. I do know it is not all about the tech. It has to be a combination and tech and environment - that is, what is motivating people to use it. The pandemic? Companies cutting costs? I think VR has staying power. I know I would love to work in that environment.
@jones1618
@jones1618 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. (I'm also technical, just a few years in your wake) The Oculus Quest and VR in general has all the hallmarks of game-changing tech, especially the virtual workspace use-case. The pandemic and social distancing might be accelerators but I've been remote working for 2 years before that and VR workspaces fit well with that workflow and are starting to get more frictionless. Add to that more immersive collaboration, shared room-scale 3D visualization and (like you said) cost reduction for companies, it starts to be a no-brainer. I predict that even when people go back to offices, companies will start replacing space-wasting conference rooms and their buggy AV equipment with relatively cheap VR headsets for the team. Why meet in "10x10 Whiteboard Conf. Room #7" when you can meet in the expansive "Star Trek TNG Ready Room" w/ 4th quarter results and a model of your latest product spinning above the holo-table?

Very informative video, thanks for that. I think there is a lot of enthusiasm for this type of VR setup but in my opinion we are far from it yet. I understand and I share the excitement, but at this stage, most reviewers feel to me overly hopeful in their videos about the short term potential and the practicality of using the Quest 2 with such an overpriced keyboard for a productivity setup (right now its almost not available anywhere and the price sky rocketed to 200 bucks). Alas, the elephants in the room: 1) the inability to bring the keyboard inside any type of relevant productivity application (such as immerse) etc. 2) The need for most people to work in a desktop environment, such as Virtual Desktop VR, and the fact that most useful keys (such as alt-tab) have been eaten up by the linux based system, so they will not be able to multitask on their PC's while using this thing (unless they pair the keyboard directly to the computer, in which case they loose the ability to see their keyboard in VR.) 3) Battery and overheating issues, not to mention comfort issues in using this setup as a productivity suite. 4) The absolute necessity to have this keyboard placed on a contrasting surface in a super well lit area for it to be visible at all in VR. No couch setups allowed (at least none that I was able to figure out). Personally, I will be returning my KK830 keyboard if the seller that made $100 extra profit on it is willing to accept it. Unless Oculus figures out a way to bring it inside other apps than Oculus Home, there is just no use for it, it's just a fancy gadget. As much as I think that the Quest 2 is a game changer in terms of VR going mainstream, it will not be the headset that brings the virtual work environment into the fold. It's a good step forward, but there's still a long road ahead. If the comfort, battery, overheating and compatibility keyboard issues can be sorted, perhaps the Quest 3 will be it.

Great stuff on recording all the footage. I tried to record showing off the keyboard but a bunch of stuff doesn't show up in the native recording feature. The tracking of the keyboard is pretty horrific, way worse than hands are tracked, it's not too much of a worry except if the keyboard was on your lap, not a flat, stationary surface. The trackpad is also really hard to use for things like two finger scrolling and using the touchpad to click works about 30% of the time. Typing however is actually really easy & accurate, more so than I would have thought would be possible even just in passthrough mode. Using the browser with multiple windows is pretty useful, being able to resize the browser windows horizontally is handy but I wish I could move the windows wherever I wanted, being able to stack them on top of one another would be very useful as I kept having to turn my neck more than what is naturally comfortable when using all 3 browser windows. Now if only Logitech actually had stock of the K830 internationally available so people could actually buy one and try it for themselves...

Looks great, I was trying to use he Immers version of this, but... knock your keyboard and the tracking is lost. Question tho... Does this automatically replace anywhere i oculus you might need to type? Like logins on the web or basically any app that is using the standard oculus keyboard? For example, the ready player me concept for creating an avatar offsite be being able to bring it into other VR worls, kinda falls down based on the long URL you have to use. If ANY VR app could hook into this API and use the logitech keyboard... we would definitely be talking...

7:06 there's for one the whole array of Google suite apps available in any browser and secondly, if Google is not your jam you can already use most of the Microsoft Office apps in just a browser, so you really can get some work done with it

You should mention that all this including adding sofa and desk is available on the original Quest aswell , not only the Quest 2. Passed few videos i thought all these were only available on the Quest 2 as a newer headset by the way it was presented only to find them available aswell on the Quest by accident. Abit missleading not to mention Quest 1 and 2 get the same update!
