Here's an often requested video about some of my common production techniques. I chose to breakdown my track Loop1 as an example. It came out on my Pulse Output ep back in May 2021. I go over the plug ins I use, my arrangement, etc etc, everything that turns the few sounds I've recorded on my modular & Alphabase into a track.

Cool video, very nice to see it all come together in the end! Some thoughts occasionally on song structure "when what happens why" would've been cool - like in the last chapter where you can see when some instrument drops out
@LucasMarchal
@LucasMarchal 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you ! About song structure I don't really have a reason behind every choice, it's all pretty intuitive especially since I usually record my tracks live, I cut/bring back the hats for example when it feels right; I'm not counting bars; never have probably never will.
@Lauli55
@Lauli55 2 жыл бұрын
@@LucasMarchal Ah yeah sure, counting bars is killjoy number 1 when doing sessions with the machines, hahaa. But still, I think there are some decisions happening regarding song structure; for example that reverb automation at 12:50. I'm sure there's more stuff like that happening. Looking forward to the next video!

Interesting video Lucas! Thanks for sharing your workflow. You mentioned using the H9 on a return track in Ableton. What kind of effect were you using it for?
@fosferus
@fosferus 2 жыл бұрын
thanks lucas, that was very helpful. i think like most people i prefer to keep on with the creative process, rather than sitting down to learn the art of mixing/mastering. even though i don't have these programs or plugin, or even work in this genre, there were some useful tips! (and some motivation to dedicate more time to mixing apart from panning and gain staging.)

In mixing more than anything I think that time & experience are really the most important ingredients... Nothing more to do that make tracks make tracks until it sounds remotely ok hehe.

Very insightful video, thank you ! Could you tell us a bit more about how you approach arrangement, since you record the tracks fully ? how much do you plan it ahead ?
@LucasMarchal
@LucasMarchal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks ! I don't really plan it ahead, it's mostly feeling. If you listen to techno regularly you'll get a feeling for the "song" "structure" after a while.

Hi Lucas aways great when youtube notifies that you have posted something new! Amazing content. One thing I was wondering, I always think that those verbos modules have like a noisy character that other eurorack modules don't have. Like they sound so techno and raw. Do you feel the same? like other manufacturers sound more round and stuff,. Do you think there's a specific module giving this character? thank you in advance for your reply!
@LucasMarchal
@LucasMarchal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks ! Yeah I guess I agree about the Verbos modules. Both versions of the Amp and Tone give a lot of character to the sounds you put through, the V1 especially has a great "je ne sais quoi" mojo.

Love the sounds! You briefly mentioned you have a clock track to clock your modular. So the modular follows the BPM set in Ableton? How do you get the clock to the modular and alpha base though? Through the Motu 16A?
@LucasMarchal
@LucasMarchal 2 жыл бұрын
The motu 16a doesn't have midi outputs but it's DC coupled so the "clock track" is a cv tools track which sends a pulse to my modular (so it follows the BPM set in Ableton). If your interface isn't dc coupled no worries, a simple audio click track will work just as well. The Alphabase and Octatrack are clocked with midi via the midi out of my other interface (Fireface UC) which has a couple midi ins/outs. Seems complicated but it isn't really, and it works, so... Maybe at one point I'll get a E-RM Multiclock which would doo all that and more more accurately.

Ahah yeah it's a treacherous world but Really enjoyable to work with and with beautiful results. The Elysia 500 (or rack) line is somewhat "inexpensive" for studio gear and is really excellent. The X-Filter/Xpressor/Karacter trio is amazing.

Thanks for the breakdown. I would love one for your track called "I/O2"! At 1:07 you mentioned not liking your tracks. It's an interesting topic and I'm curious as to why you don't particularly like some of your tracks. What about them don't you like?
@LucasMarchal
@LucasMarchal 2 жыл бұрын
I have another one coming but not for this one :) Yeah it's a topic I often discuss with friends. It's not that I don't like my tracks... Some of them I still really like... I have a weird arc where I'm psyched on it, then before it comes out I think this is definitely not very good, but then reassure myself that if a label actually put the effort to put it out it must be somewhat ok, and then once it's out it's not really yours anymore. Even if I personally think the track isn't that great, it still makes me super happy to see them live on their own, be played by djs etc... Things can always be better, but also I try to not get too worked up on it. There's always the next track :)

@@LucasMarchal i see, that's interesting to hear and I've always wondered that about artists who put out tracks (whether they doubt them during the process of making/releasing). But to me they sound great! Haha anyways, looking forward to the next breakdown video

I noticed that your recorded kick is not on the ableton grid, is that something that you are correcting later on in the arrangement to get all tracks line up on the ableton grid or do u let all tracks be of grid? I have some problems to get my recorded tracks that I get from my tascam mixer to line up correct in ableton and it gets mi cracy =)
@LucasMarchal
@LucasMarchal 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed ! That's the latency from my interface. So the kick is not on the grid but everything actually has the same latency so it doesn't matter. It would be annoying if I were to use VST instruments for sure. Still, I'm planning on getting a ERM multiclock at some point.
