@b_uppy7 жыл бұрын
Bruce Schneider Your point?
@partyinthecloudkingdom7 жыл бұрын
Bruce Schneider grafting and growing from seeds have their own benefits and drawbacks, one benefit of grafting if that you can take a twig from one of these ancient apple trees and frankenstein it onto an adult apple tree of a different variety and grow both kinds of apples, one of the head grafters at the rare fruit growers association i mentioned has a tree with 50 or so varieties of apple grafted on
@b_uppy7 жыл бұрын
Cloud King It doesn't require a master grafter to do that.

Very interesting! For the past few years the fruit shop in my town have been selling (probably not rare as such but) more forgotten varieties of local apples instead of just gala, granny smith and the usual sorts. I guess both to support local growers and to promote the varieties so they don’t die out. I never even knew different types existed before that! It’s important to keep these things around- this man is doing great work!

When I was in Italy, I was fortunate to visit a small farm that raises lost apples and plums from the Roman ages. They research the different varieties and grow them in their nursery. It's so cool! They also have their own wine. It was such a treat to visit them after a long hike. :)

Can I get some of those Dickinson seeds to grow?
@jameswagandt87187 жыл бұрын
Peter Trang a dickensen apple tree won't likely grow from a dickensen seed. You would need a cutting to graft onto a sapling
@Peter-td2vf7 жыл бұрын
James Wagandt do you even know what a seed is or its purpose? Of course a Dickinson seed can grow into a Dickinson tree. You can grow anything with the right environment factors.
@b_uppy7 жыл бұрын
Peter Trang Wrong. Seeds of trees don't reliably throw the same variety as the parent. Grafting onto scions is needed to propagate a particular variety.
