In Australia we rented a house that had a small young tree. It grew lots of stunning apples. The skin was ruby red and the flesh was pure bright white. We asked a grower what he thought it may be. She said it sounded like a snow apple. (Pomme de neige or fameuse) One of the best apples I have ever tasted

Colvis Spice is my favorite apple. It is a sport found growing on a branch of a Golden Delicious tree. The fruit is russet and has vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon flavors. I discovered it at a fruit club Fall tasting show las year. I was able to get a 2yr grafted (on dwarf root stock) bare root last Spring. It has about 12 apples on it now (end of October). I can't wait to taste them. I am hoping to get some Golden Russet scion to graft in the Spring.

It has been said that 'Cox's Orange Pippin' is the world's most loved apple. It has been called "the best of table fruits" and "the noblest of winter varieties" by Swedish pomologists. 'Cox's Orange Pippin' reaches its full development in December. Being able to enjoy the fruit's characteristic scent and unforgettable taste at Christmas time is reason enough to grow this wonderful, albeit somewhat difficult variety.

The Rubinette!!! Is my absolute favorite! Ten years ago I went to an orchard and discovered them, and fortunately they are the owner's favorite as well. One year I was too late getting them as tour buses had come and cleared them out. I was devastated. Now I mark my calendar for September 1st and check with the orchard.

Dear Sir, Thank you for this programme on the best-tasting apples. I love this sort of programme, especially hearing about apples I am unfamiliar with. In south-western Ontario, about 40 years ago, one was able to buy Cox’s Orange Pippins. But, they didn’t sell because they didn’t look good to the average buyer. If one bit into one, one became an instant convert. The last place where they were available, the orchardist said they didn’t grow well in his part of Ontario. Occasionally, I go to a large farmers market, which, back in the 1980s and 1990s, had a wide variety of apples. Such is not the case now. The number of varieties is quite limited. If one comes across an old continuing orchard, one might be fortunate enough to get some of the old varieties. Thank you for your very informative programme. I really enjoyed it. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis London, Ontario, Canada.

I'm an Aussie. I worked as permant hand on a New Zealand orchard for a number of years where there were about 14 different varieties of apple grown. Years later, some varieties have been pulled out & replaced - eg the Cox's Orange Pippin has gone from the shops, replaced by "Jazz". Another not seen these days is Gravenstein. I always hated the sour pie apples whose name I think was Weinstein. We grew pears & plums as well ,& the fruit had to go through the Apple & Pear marketing board because NZ strictly controlled farmer's lives. Fortunately times have changed but the fruit growers still have to be especially efficient to survive. New products like Golden Kiwifruit have seen exports flourish, so diversity should be the name of the game. I choose Golden Delicious as my favourite apple, even though they bruise so easily.

Agree that Ashmead, Wickson, Cox, and Rubinette are some of the very best. Might add Karmijn de Sonnaville, which is a Cox seedling. Kidd's Orange Red also solid also. And Sandow, a great Spy seedling from Canada. Among early-season apples, I'd probably add Gravenstein to this list. My favourite for cooking is Stayman - tart but spicy.

Back when I ate apples, on a strict carnivore diet now for 1.5 years, I found one of my favorites was American Cameo. Hard to find but so very good. Very crisp and firm texture, fairly thin skin so you don't end up trying to chew a huge mouthful of chewy skin, very juicy, and just the right balance between sweet and tart and as an added bonus they have a....not sure what to call it but the only thing that comes to mind is a spicy back note. Wonderful apples but I could only find them occasionally.

Have you ever tasted Jesse Hyatt's Hawkeye Red Delicious apple? A spontaneous cross that occurred in Hyatt's orchard in Winterset Iowa ~1880. The apples won national apple tastings and the rights to the apple were bought by Stark Brothers who bred the apple into the inedible Red Delicious (naming it Bullet Proof would have been more honest, don't you agree? Jesse Hyatt's Hawkeye is available at Wilson's Orchard near Iowa City, Iowa, and perhaps they would sell you a scion of it.

Nice lineup of great apples, very appropriate to have golden Russet in there, I’ve only had them 2-3 times in 12 yrs every once in a while they may show up in a more diverse store or roadside stand, when they are at peak flavor it’s mind blowing good complex spicy flavor. I have 2 smaller trees no luck yet, deer ruined one of them. For one to try I have heard great things about black Oxford, it likes the far north like Maine ,New Hampshire ect. Love these types of videos, also check out skill cult, very talented breeder behind that project.

So many different likes! My answer: depends on what you are doing with the apple! Or my mood! I use three varieties for my apple sauce: combo of a sweeter soft apple like Golden Delicious or Jonagold with a Gala or Spartan and for sure an Elstar. For apple crisp a softer apple like the Jonagold or Golden or Red Delicious. Good eating apple is Honeycrisp or Elstar.

Nice review and some great apples. If you can find a scion of cherry cox, it has pretty consistent cherry flavor. I like it better here than regular cox. I've been able to pass the cherry flavor trait down to a pink fleshed seedling that I named Cherry Crush. The future is bright for cherry flavored apples. Cox and Cherry Cox both have a not geat, soft, coarse grained texture. Cox has been crossed with other apples a lot to try to get it's complex flavor, but I think it has just been mostly crossed with the wrong apples. It needs to be crossed with highly flavored apples. I use Cherry Cox as a parent instead. It is a sport of cox's orange, so pretty much the same genetics with a slight variation, maybe just epigenetic changes. i've never had a good honeycrisp out of the store. I finally tasted one off a tree of mine and it was quite good and actually had nice and complex flavor. It is the most sickly branch in my entire orchard though. I use Wickson a lot in breeding for the savory flavor. That savory, malty flavor develops late, so hang it as long as possible. They are usually picked too early. I have grown and named seedlings of it and will have more in the future. I've also sent out thousands of open pollinated and intentionally crossed Wickson seeds. So many good apples will come out of those seeds. Yours almost looks more like Crimson Gold. Occasionally they are mixed up. CG has less of that malty, savory component, but it is quite good. Small apples if anything tend to be more concentrated in flavor. Small apples like Centennial, wickson and Chestnut crab often show up on favorite apples lists. The only one that I think is commonly available in stores (not very common) is crimson gold. Golden Russet at its best is one of the best apples I've ever tasted. Everything comes together as far as harmonious complex flavors, and sugar acid balance. It was partially responsible for me becoming an apple collector and breeder. One cool thing about GR is in storage it tends to go rubbery instead of meally or soft. Here is my review. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaPOfqeZnJ2phdUsi=NREKeIVNXr1f_szq Ashmeads is similar, but golden russet beats it out here in a good year. Ashmeads is a much better grower though. Very reliable, well behaved and productive. golden Russet is lanky and less consistent in bearing. I've been crossing them together and have high hopes fot he offspring. I need to find evercrisp. I collect as many apples as I can with those artificial fruit flavors. Those flavors are highly variable, sometimes storng, sometimes absent, sometimes they change from one flavor to another in some years. Climate and growing conditions are a huge factor too. I don't care much for many famous apples as grown here (including rubinette and hudson's golden gem). You just never know til you try unless someone close by is growing it. King David is worth a try anywhere. It is very flavorful, like spicy cider. for early apples, chestnut crab and williams' pirde are the best here. Not like typical summer apples at all. Williams' Pride can start as early as late July. Chestnut is more like late August into sept. Cherry Crush has become my favorite early fall apple. I'd rather eat it than cherry cox. I have plenty of scion available every year through my website skillcult.com Sweet 16 can be seriously amazing, off the charts flavor, like spicy cherry candy. It is so hit and miss here though that I don't try to grow it anymore. It is also disease resistant. Gold rush is excellent for storing and better stored for a month or more than off the tree. Like the best of golden delicious flavors, just ramped up. Ive bred some good seedlings of it that are pink fleshed, Vanilla Pink and Pink Lemonade. they don't keep well like Gold Rush. I tend to favor a lot of my seedling apples now. Maybe I'm prejudice, or maybe it is because they were bred and selected in my climate. You can read about them all here... skillcult.com/applebreeding Maybe we can do a collaboration where I send you some cool scions to graft and try out. You can contact me through my website.
