Border View Farms is a mid sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. We raise corn, soybeans, and wheat on a little over 3,000 acres.
My name is Nathan. I run this channel and farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. I get questions about how and why we do things on the farm frequently, even from my own family members, so to help explain things it's easier to just show you. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture in general as well as dispel some of the common misconceptions.
I hope you enjoy my content and please ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can.
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos.
You can reach me through messages on Facebook or Instagram @borderviewfarms or by email bakernth@gmail.com. Please don't call my parents house!

You will have to redo to intro video in the spring once you get the planter on the new 8RX Pretty amazing how something so large and so heavy can produce such low ground pressure. What did Jack think of it ?

You still have a pro box worth of seed, and all the weight if the planters center frame, sitting on 4 implement tires. You still have the same pinch rows as before. Plus the weight of the fertilizer tank that you pull behind the planter. I just don"t see how there will be that much difference in compaction when all said and done. But I'm wrong more than I'm right, nice looking tractor tho, one of the nicest Deere made, imho.

I love the look of your 8 RX tractor, very cool! But now compare tracks to LSW tires. We have a huge tire shop here that sells a pile of LSW tires. Personally I really like the benefits of the LSW tires but to each there own. Thanks for the video!

We like tracks alot . We did a few tracks vs tires trials side by side in some fields. It took some convincing to get my father and uncle on board with tracks but the yield gain and less tillage sold them. When planting We seen better emergence on the pinch rows. In the fall on graincart we didn't hardly even leave a rut even in moist conditions. The ride quality is way better . Yes tracks are expensive but well worth it . We do alot of long term notill and it wouldn't be possible without tracks on our soils . We even run tracks on our combines. The benefits out weigh the downfalls . The tires guys will argue the opposite all day but for us tracks are the only way. Great video keep up the good work!

One thing you need to talk about is how much better the 8RX is going to do in fall grain cart usage , weight for pulling heavy cart & muddy conditions. Zack allways takes about the 2 track & the advantage but he has not purchased a 8RX yet. You are so good at explaining these things .

I don't want to come across as a know it all , I think if you went to a big truck recycling parts center a got a tank because in the past it was cheaper then having a machine shop fix it , an if you turned the tank around so you could fill it from the back side of the cap then the fill cap is at the top of the tank an get more fuel in the tank , just a suggestion.

Thanks for the info on the tracks. I was wondering what the maintenance cost and schedule of the track system? I definitely see the benefits of tracks and haven’t heard nothing but good things from having them. However, if the maintenance cost are expensive and quite often are the tracks really helping your ROI in the long term?
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure there is more maintenance I don't know cost. There is oil in the bogie and idler hubs that needs changed every 1500 hrs and a few more grease points
@BRPFan
@BRPFan 2 жыл бұрын
@@BorderViewFarms Not sure what your 8 RX is going to be but on bigger 4WD tractors farmers say maintained cost is around $8000 to $$12,000 per year on a 9 RX or a Case IH Quadtrac. Plus changing the oil on those bogie wheels yearly for sure they say. Not a huge cost there just takes a bit of time.

One nice benefit no till farmers have is to go to lower horsepower equipment that is cheaper, lighter, and more fuel efficient. I on the other hand choose to go wider instead. Which means tracks. It goes towards our controlled traffic goals also.

Wondering how the 8RX is going to do applying your anhydrous. I'm afraid those front tracks are going to tear up more corn turning on the ends than tires with that bigger footprint. Hope it's not too bad.

Just wait until it is time to clean the tracks, and/or repair replace the tracks, bogie wheels, etc. The LSW wheel option is way cheaper and less maintenance than tracks. The fuel savings from running LSW tires as compared to tracks is an eye opener.

Ground pressure isn't everything. Contact time counts too; a round tire squeezes more but only for a fraction of a second. Tracks squeeze much much longer.

Frankly I was quite surprised at the reduction in ground pressure, it is much more than I expected. However it will most interesting to see how traction is potentially reduced in damp soils with the cleats filled up (eg on the grain cart) as I cannot somehow see how the tracks will self clean and dig like a ordinary tyre but time will tell.
@onlygodknowswhat7595
@onlygodknowswhat7595 2 жыл бұрын
They typically do not sink in and dig, but is that what you want to have happen? Sinking(or digging in) is a sure sign that you just compacted a ton or two of soil together.

Nice tractor a new one every 10 years oh that'll be nice. It's good to see your uncle is taking interest in the new equipment and looks like he might be warming up to the camera a little bit maybe?. It would be OK if he did, I bet he's got a lot to say, a lot of knowledge, just like your dad and you're self.. very educational, good job.
