Sorry if this is a newbie question (been producing a month now) but what does cut through the mix mean? I’ve heard it a few times.

@@TonyChurch112 that's a great question. "Cut through the mix" means helping something stand out in the mix. A lot of times, as we add more and more elements to a song, important sounds could get "buried", meaning they're harder to hear then they should be. So you want it to "cut" through the mix instead. The easiest way is to adjust the levels of your tracks. Another common way is to use an EQ. And a more advanced way to get something to cut through is to use a plugin like Trackspacer.

Nice! You're gonna love Trackspacer. It's one of the few plugins that I use in every project. The "take me away" vocals I'm pretty sure uses a vocoder and some reverb. The vocoder is doing the heavy lifting though. Glad you liked those samples together, that synthetic vocal mixed with that intimate piano is such a cool mix.

Hi I've been watching several tutorials but no one explains where and how to put the trackspacer and where in cubase 5 do I find the sidechain function from a vocal track please? (insert or what)

The amount knob is extra sensitive for the purpose of the effect. Some users like the pumping sound used mostly in various styles of EDM.

That's a great question. Here's how I would approach it. If you want that really pronounced ducking sound, then go for a sidechain. In that case you want the sidechain to be pretty blunt and obvious. When you want something more transparent use trackspacer. Or if you want to address masking use Trackspacer as well. But should you use both? Well, if your sidechain is in your face than you probably dont need to use trackspacer. But I can see instances where you use gentle sidechain compression and then follow it up with trackspacer if you want to hone in on a certain frequency.

I'm not familiar with the Center plugin. But when it comes to Pro Q3 and Trackspacer the main when it comes to eliminating masking is that trackspacer takes care of a lot of the heavy lifting. It's very easy to eliminate masking with Trackspacer. But with Pro Q3, you need to know a little more of what you're doing. You're able to use sidechain to see/hear where frequencies are clashing between two sources. Then you would use dynamic EQ to address the masking. You can get more detailed results, but with trackspacer, it's extremely quick and easy.

I don't know the context for the third sample, but are you sure it's something you want to release?

That's a great question. In that third sample (if you're talking about the guitar+vocals examples), there isn't a context beside the demo shown here. However, I have a fast release so that the guitar frequencies that are ducked from the vocals can come back when the vocals are gone. That way, the guitars can still have a moment.

Quick answer is trackspacer. It's just quicker to use and lighter on the CPU. Soothe 2 can do sidechain compression, but it's not really made for that. Good question. I find that at around 20% is where you'll find a more transparent result. If you want the ducking to be more emphasized, you can take the amount to around 40%. Anything more than 60% I think is way too much.

Thanks for the video Onesto. Is trackspacer similar in functionality to the izotope neutron/nectar unmask feature? Does it make sense to get this if I already have the izotope plug-ins?

Yes it is similar to both Neutron and Nectar's unmask feature! However, I find that Trackspacer addresses the unmasking in a simpler, faster, and more effective way. I avoided buying Trackspacer and used to just stick with Neutron and Nectar for unmasking. And while they both address the same issue, but after getting Trackspacer (during a sale of course) there was no turning back. When dealing with unmasking in Neutron and Nectar, it always felt like I had to keep track of where my signals are headed, and there was a lot of extra steps that Trackspacer doesn't have. So, I still recommend at least demoing Trackspacer even if you have Neutron/Nectar. You should be pleasantly surprised.
