Get you a rubber squeegee. Use it to swipe away the water as you sand, and it will quickly let you know if you need to sand more. For stuff like this, i’d start at 1000 then 2000 by hand. Then, they have 3000 pads for the electric sander with the 3000 pad, it only takes a few seconds of sanding if you did good on the first 2 grits.

Modern clear over base paint systems are designed to give super wet look shines. Back in the mid fifties the paint was not that shiny. Polishing this tractor paint could take some time. If you use a proper paint polisher with a bit of water mixed in you will get to a high shine but I would think about the period correct shine and make a decision. Also when colour sanding I would just use my hands and not a block. at this stage you are not trying to flatten the panel but just need to take the unevenness out of the paint. You risk cutting back to the primer on any high spots with a block.

I painted my Lil Red Express with a single stage urathane a couple of years ago. After letting the paint cure for a week or so, I started wet sanding using a flexible soft block and a rougher grit paper 500. Then I switched to 1000, then 1500 and 2000 grit wet sand papers. Some people use machines to wet sand but I still go old school and hand rub. Then I use 3M liquid rubbing compound and a wool pad and buffer. Then I break out the foam pads and run them wet with a Finesse 2 polish and then a gray 3M Glazing Polish. It turned out like glass and seems to be holding its shine great. I used PPG Shop Line paint. That’s kind of what you did with a few twists.

I'm no sure if you have plastic sheeting on your ceiling, but one time when I was wet sanding and buffing one of my hot rods I couldn't seem to get a nice shine and it turned out the plastic on my ceiling was showing up in the paint reflection, I took it outside and it looked great. Just a thought.
@60chevyjim2 жыл бұрын
Dan the color looks great , if your wet sanding to buff it out , buy a buffer and a wool pad to cut it with first . then polish it with a clean foam pad . your trying to buff it with a da ? and stay away from the edges when sanding and buffing if you get a one directional buffer. if you use a buffer all ways make shore it is spinning off the edge of a panel never spinning on to the edge it will take paint off a edge real quick. you can color sand it with a da just check what your wet sanding with a squeegie to see when its getting smooth. you'l get it done . somboby got to buff this black 56 belair , it got 3 coats of 2k clear.

Best thing you can do with alkyd enamels is not clear coat them. The clear coat will fail and look like crap. Wet sand, buff and wax and it'll last year's/decades. Clear coat and maybe you'll get a year before it yellows and flakes off.
@thomashamilton82522 жыл бұрын
Do not worry about the clear coat lifting the enamel just put a mist coat on the first coat of clear. Then put on three good coats of clear. Let it set up a couple of days and then sand starting with 800, and progress with 1500, 2000, 2500, and finish with 3000 on the orbital sander. You should have a pretty decent shine even before buffing with speed buffer. Keep the surface moist and don't buff dry. You will have a glass like finish. Check the paint society web site on how to apply a nice clear coat. You can really get asuper paint job with patience. I look forward to your videos and can't wait to see that No mad finished. I use Meguairs buffing compound. Harbor Freight carries it. Keep the videos coming.

@DDSpeedShop2 жыл бұрын
I'm excited to see how it lasts.
@sixtyfiveford2 жыл бұрын
@@frankschwartz7405 If you use a real automotive 2 part clear coat it will last. Any single stage clear coat crap will fail. There's nothing wrong with an oil base / single stage paint by itself and it is designed to be used by itself without a clear coat. The best part about not using a clear coat is you can put a scratch ding/dent anywhere and you can fix just that spot with touch up paint. Once you clear coat it you have to sand the entire panel and sometimes other panels to get it to match the yellowing of the clear coat.

@@ronwallace6273 anyone can screw up if you do it wrong, or use the wrong products. Most buffers have RPM settings. Even the harbor freight (princess auto in Canada I believe). one does. Do whatever you are comfortable with. I've never painted a car, but I've buffed many cars I had bought to flip always using a 10" grinder style buffer with the appropriate pad and compound. If you are new at it don't use a wool pad, and don't spend any time on edges, or body lines. They will eat through quick.
@ronwallace62732 жыл бұрын
@@tinkerne-round4079 yea your right , I was just saying a grinder and a buffer look the same but the buffer is slower , and grinder is to fast and never buff a body line or edge of anything , and burning paint is easy the faster it goes I use to work at a body shop , painting and wet sanding laquer paint cars what a pain but the slower you go take your time it will look like a million bucks
@grberendzenproductions3122 жыл бұрын
Keep rinsing with a lot of clean water to reduce the chance of trapping dirt under the paper and gouging the finish. I liked to do it outside with a hose on low flow. If you go with powered sanders and buffers, keep the paper finer, so you don't accidentally take off too much paint. If you're clear coating, wet sand and then give the paint a few days to gas off before spraying. Taking off the outer "skin" should release more trapped thinners. I do, however like the 90 day rule from initial color application before clear, yet sanding flat while the color is not yet rock hard. You can't go wrong waiting longer than you have to, but you can if you clear coat too soon. Not great for getting out videos, but good for getting a lasting, problem free finish.
@notperfectgarage45952 жыл бұрын
For the buffer you are using dan. Wet paper needs to go to 4000. If u stop at 2000 get a spin buffer ( harbor freight) and wool pads. You are not crating heat to burn the paint. Look up paint Society. Guy is incredible. Hope it helps. ( u still need to make dd speed shop Scrunchys. ) lol.
