Only time will tell if the $3000 savings is worth it based on how durable the Mossimo will be. That independent rear suspension is a huge plus for trail riders. For the gear noise/feel is it possible the Honda developed that over use? You should verify from a honda shop that it is normal to do that. And the power steering would make up probably at least half the price difference on these. Just guessing but if camo plastics cost $500 then power steering has got to add $1500 easy. Repair is a big consideration. We bought a few Chinese brand dirt bikes. Most shops won't waste their time. Lucky for us we found a local dealer that sells Chinese/Vietnamese bikes/ATVs and they were willing to do the work as long as I sources the parts. So any buyer of the TSC ATV needs to verify valid options for a nearby shop for repairs.

I have no specific brand allegiance. I research and buy what works for me on my farm here in Missouri. I have a Massimo 700 SXS which I bought in 2014. Rumor had it that they are Yamaha clones. IDK, but the machine is rock solid and easy to maintain. I believe that Massimo parts are available on-line from Motorcycle Doctor in FL. I also own a 2005 Yamaha Kodiak 450 ATV which still has air in the tires from Japan. I bought that machine because it had independent suspension, a true locking diff, and a lever shifter. In all the years it has been up and down the ravines and woods around here, towing my boat around the property, plowing snow, and dragging deer out, I only need to change the oil along with the air and oil filters. I think that new Massimo ATV is more comparable to the Yamaha Kodiak than than the Honda Rancher. As was my Massimo SXS, they are good values and, in my experience, reliable machines.

Another great comparison. As an owner of an 04 Rancher that's still going I have to say it's been very reliable and inexpensive to maintain. Mine doesn't make that knocking sound with the electronic shift , that's concerning. I have to say that Mossimo has a lot of nice features for the price. The only concern I would have is replacement parts and servicing dealers . Thanks Joe !

Hello, I have 3 Honda Rancher 400 AT with electric shift & Automatic 2x4 and 4x4. The electric shift on the handle bar is super smooth. I plow snow and ride the mountains of Colorado. Machines are 2004 2006 and 2007. I have not even changed tires yet. Mainly batteries and winches. I love how they push snow. When your new machine gets broke in, see if it shifts smooth as Honda does. Or even after the first oil change. Ride safe my friends.

I can’t help myself but to rag on it just a little because I know a lot of people who’ve gotten screwed over with the cheaper ATVs and have ended up spending the same amount if not more fixing it, then just going ahead and getting a established brand, but then again, they’ve also gotten lucky and got a good ones so it really just comes down to your budget and what you need it for. I personally have had 15+ Hondas and a handful of Polaris and I can tell you out of the two of them. I would much rather have a Honda solely for the transmission because I personally do a lot of towing and pulling stuff with my four wheeler. And I have never had a problem with my transmission, but on a couple Polaris I had I’ve seen them burn belts because they were used to drag pastures, and they were kept at a consistent speed for a long time, and it wore a nice valley in the clutches and chewed up belts and that was surprisingly expensive to fix whereas my Honda has never had a problem doing it now keep in mind I have never had a DCT I’ve only had manual shifts and electric shifts so I can’t speak for them. And to talk about the plastics I think Honda was thinking ahead a little bit because you don’t have to remove a single screw bolt or push-pin to exposed the entire gas tank and side of the engine IMO it is superior just because it takes so little time to take them on and off. The last thing I would be concerned about is getting miscellaneous parts for it, would tractor supply be Parts dealer for them? Or would you have to order them online because I know my tractor supplies is a hell of a lot closer than my Honda dealership lol
@justin_steen6 ай бұрын
Oh, and one more thing, what would the resale value be? I wouldn’t think it’d be high because of people being skeptical of an offbrand but on the other hand if they do takeoff, it probably would be pretty good? Just food for thought.

That's the issue. The bias of what is "junk" or "not junk" is a problem. You seen "some"...but not all. Bill Winke is a legendary bow hunter and land manager. Has a TON of videos of him working and developing farms with various equipment. His ATV is a cheap Chinese Coleman/Hisun. Prob at least 10 years old. People say "Hisun is junk" and never used one. I had one; loved it. Great machine and served us well. The Massimo's are Linhai; and if you were in Europe you would see them everywhere. Clearly not junk. This is new to our market, which takes a learning curve and adjustment...and Massimo and Linhai will need to earn their reputation in the US just like Honda and Kawasaki had to in the past when everyone feared Japanese equipment. I get your points, but to use a broad brush to paint an entire industry is naive. I know powersports equipment, and have owned a lot of it. What intrigues me about the newer and less expensive equipment is how much more you get for your money. I will call it straight; and I really like and am impressed with the new atv.

I just purchased a CFMoto CForce 600. CFMoto does all the manufacturing for KTM now. Yes people do like the Big 4 but many of their models are outdated and expensive. Believe me I own 10 motorcycles and many are Japanese. Plus a lot of the Japanese models are not manufactured where people think they are. Matter of fact is that the BMW parallel twin motors are made in China. Many of Hondas motors are made in China. Many ATVs are rebadged from other companies such as Kymco. A John Deer Gator has a Kawasaki motor. You just don't know where they come from. Maybe people can't believe that Tractor Supply , which has everything,, can put out a good specific product.

You bring up a great point about sourcing; we have no clue where the parts come from. I own a lot of equipment and have sold a lot of equipment. The most important economy to me is the one under my roof. I own a Honda and a Kawasaki and both are excellent. But I don't bleed one color. Yamaha was just a bit more than I wanted to spend at the time but I liked them. The Kawasaki’s seem to have some common issues and the Honda is tough. I paid $6299 out the door. I opted for footshift as I’ve heard newer electric shift can be finicky at times. I opted for solid axle because I move a lot of trailers. So it’s been tough. I added some 27” tires and 14” wheels. I have heard those trackers feel like they want to tip easily. I’ve not rode one. My old bass had the tracker sxs and liked it though.

McPherson strut is what you find on the front of a Polaris ATV. Replaces the upper an arms. What your Mossimo has in the rear is a simple double wishbone. Now the most common rear suspension across all the manufactures. The aluminum wheels are only a premium option if the quality is good. If you bend a steel wheel it’s less likely to crack… aluminum if lower quality has a much higher chance of just cracking and leaving you stranded instead of bending and letting you limp home. Cheap steelies last longer in the rough. Transmission on that Honda is an auto shift manual.. super rugged and controllable great for work and towing. Old school tech. Cvt transmissions are great now that they’ve been out for a long time. But each manufacturer has a different feel based on weights in the sheaves. Tuning is key. My Yamaha grizz 700 spanks Honda in every catagory and will also last as long as the Honda, costs about the same yet it is setup more like the mossimo, but can come with or without power steering if you want it closer in comparison. I think it’s a bit of an unfair comparison using a basic Honda against the Chinese machine when about the only thing they share is EFI. The mossimo is a great machine based on options if your stretched on cash, want in on a midsize modern machine and don’t plan on beating it like a name brand machine. I’d consider a mossimo for my son or wife. A great learner, beginner machine. But if I want to get the absolute most out of a machine.. ya got to go big name Japanese machine. I’ll be looking forward to future updates to see how this holds up. I got my son a coolster 125 when he was young, was a great machine to learn on. Quality was rough, but functional. Had no power but did all the things you’d expect it to do. For $600 it outlasted us and we sold it to a friend for his kiddos to learn on. They have their place in the market, but not machines to replace the Hondas or Yamahas of the world.

Will, they said the same thing about "those Japanese" atv's in the 90's. And here we are. I have a Honda, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat and this Massimo and the Massimo is so far right on par with the others. If it had power steering at this price, I would buy it over the others.
@Slane5836 ай бұрын
The Honda transmission has a small "thunk" to it while shifting because it acts like a automatic transmission in a car, it is shifting actual gears. The Massimo/Linhai uses a cvt like all of the other atv makers because it's a much simpler system to make. It's also a much easier system for the end user to work on versus Honda's fancy automatic transmission. As nice as Honda's are for reliability, out of all of the big brands their atv's feel the most dated even their most premium model. They haven't changed anything with their atv's in 15 years or more. The Rancher is a $9,000 atv that isn't giving you $9,000 of anything new. Someone who instantly attacks something like the Massimo/Linhai will always have a beef with a Chinese or Taiwanese brand trying to compete with the likes of Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and so on. People do it with everything, it doesn't matter if it's automobiles or power tools if they don't like something they instantly default to calling it junk even if they never tried it. Them knowing where it was made makes them believe their opinion is justified. I think it's also part of the fear like everyone had during the 1980's. When everyone was afraid of the Japanese brands taking over and ousting US brands. Now it's just another round of the same thing but this time it's a Chinese or Taiwanese brand trying to show they're also capable of making a quality item. It's nice to see that Tractor Supply will be offering a full size quad for those who want it. For me personally I would go with a CF Moto CeForce 500 instead because it is a few dollars less and it comes standard with EPS. For me it would also be easier to get a payment plan through a CF Moto dealer than it would be through Tractor Supply. Tractor Supply wants you to sign up for their credit card in order to do payments on anything large. I avoid credit cards like the plague. :)

@HoffnerPrecision5 ай бұрын
I had a 98 foreman 400. Great machine. Beat to death daily on a ranch in Wyoming, and made it to 14,000 ish miles without needing any work. Then it had an issue with the charging system and we put new bearings in the rear end. I’d bet it’s still running strong wherever it is. As to the question on quality, Honda is the only machine I’ll buy for the ranch I manage now. We’ve tried pretty much all of the major brands and Honda is the only one that’s built tough enough for what we do. The last Polaris we had was a ranger 1000. After 3 years, we had spent more on repairs and maintenance than we did purchasing the machine brand new for $35,000. Other Polaris machines we had have all been similar stories. Now we run the pioneers in every engine size. We have a 2018 1000-5 with almost 20,000 miles of hard use that’s getting the engine rebuilt because the guy busted a hole in the oil pan and lost all the oil. Other than that, it’s in near perfect mechanical condition and I expect to get another 20,000 miles out of it. I just passed down my 2021 pioneer 1000-5 with 11,000 miles in perfect condition to my summer help and replaced it with a 2024. They keep getting better.

I have a 1997 Honda 4 Trax 300 that we bought brand new then. It still runs as good today as the day we bought it.... It's simple to work on and it is dependable to say the least. I went to buy a new one about a month ago and I was not happy at all with the hidden charges that our local dealer added onto the final price. Between destination, freight, set up, and clerical charges it added a lot of more money to the stated sticker price. I wanted a new one but I can't justify this insane mark up. I would think about this tractor supply model if I knew I could have a support network for parts. I'm a good mechanic and I'm able to repair my own machinery. I would just need parts to do so if needed....

@JoeTheFarmer5 ай бұрын
That rubber band is used in just about every premium atv and side by side on the market. And if it was executed properly, it wouldn't jolt as much as it does (especially on hills). I know machines my friend...I got a bunch of them. My Kawasaki prairie that is 21 years old still has the original cvt belt. It's a non issue. Honda is charging a lot for these machines; that should be smoother. To argue otherwise is silly. I could care less if people like the Honda or the Massimo; doesn't affect me either way. You are correct. TSC does not repair them and depending on where you live it’s good to know who will do warranty work before buying. Sorry you had an issue with the mini bike. They aways looked fun! Never had one.

I had a Kubota tractor and traded it in for a John Deere tractor but I will seriously look at the kioti tractor if I decide to upgrade to something bigger.

I would get a Honda just for the fact that there are not many mechanics near where I live that will work on Chinese made machines.

That knocking is just the gears shifting, all Honda's do that. The Massimo has a belt, cvt. IF its made like a Yamaha it will last for years, if its like a polaris or can am....watch out!

If the Massimo has a CVT you kinda don't have engine braking. You have to do something to the CVT controller to enable engine braking and something so small and inexpensive may not actually have the capability. Neither DCT nor CVT are known for being great at towing but check with manufacturer specs and do your best to avoid exceeding the given limits. As for why Honda has a single shock and the Massimo has independent suspension is probably two major reasons. 1) Honda engineered their own suspension from ground up and built something reliable and low maintenance for long term use and abuse. 2) Massimo probably bought someone else's design and went with the option that looked best to consumers. A solid straight axle is definitely stronger than independent rear suspension would be. CV joints require maintenance at shorter intervals than regular solid axle bearings. How much of a difference this will make over the span of 30 years is debatable. Probably not a lot.

Great post man. Very well said. One thing to add is that it does seem to have decent engine braking in Low gear. But, both really nice machines. Blessed to have them and not need to walk! Lol

I don't know where you get the 9k price for the rancher base price is 5999.99 which in all accounts the most comparable model that has no eps would be 7399.99 seems like a more apple's to apples price comparison not the top of the line honda just my honest opinion. The Honda transmission is completely different. it's not a cvt like the Massimo also. I appreciate you sharing the video and thoughts all good stuff at the end of the day.

Lol; I got it from the fact that we have an invoice for the one in my barn. You failed to mention Honda's $620 destination fee and whatever doc fee the dealer is charging and about a $400 add on for camo. No winch, handguards, etc. Also about 70 less cc's. I think my comparison was fair.

@@JoeTheFarmeryou are definitely right about the price point I just went and looked at a new Honda base model and it was 9000 grand so I got a used Honda rancher and I love it

I bought a massimo 760 4 wheeler. It rides great, the only thing I don’t like is that the exhaust heats up the fuel tank. Could be dangerous.
@JoeTheFarmer5 ай бұрын
I’ve never run the 760; would love to! They are really nice looking machines. And that’s a lot of power. But interesting point on the fuel tank.
@JaysonRay-g7q5 ай бұрын
The fuel tank gets so hot that it builds up pressure in the tank and gas drips out of the overflow line. I cans take the cap off to relieve the pressure but in just a few seconds it builds back up and continues to push evaporated/condensed gasoline back out the overflow. It is a spark or backfire from becoming a fire ball. I’m waiting to see if the manufacturer has a fix for it. If not I’m going to put a heat shield on the exhaust pipe.

Thanks Dale! I agree with you. The longevity will need to be earned over time, but initial thoughts are that it's a really nice option. Hope all is well!

@JoeTheFarmer yes if you buy honda your buying reliability you pay for it though. You can get the T boss for about the same price as the honda. I believe in maintenance is the biggest key to longevity.

I agree. Truth is, most people don’t want a side by side or atv to go 60 mph and take it through a swamp. They want reliable and affordable transportation off road. I would have zero concerns taking this atv in the woods. And as I showed, the seat is WAY more comfortable than the Rancher. The Honda is Clay’s. Hope I don’t owe him a royalty for using it! Lol

Simple answer to your initial question. Buy once, cry once. It may cost more upfront but it'll be cheaper in the long run than saving a few bucks now. And paying for repairs over time down the road. Independent rear suspension and solid rear axle have different use cases. The rancher as it's name implies would be a ranch or farm use machine. Mostly flat farm land. Witch could still hit the trails. Just not a comphy ride. You will feel more of the trails. Independent rear suspension awesome for the trails while still being perfectly fine for farm/ranch work. Honda transmissions are famous for the clicking/clunking. Used to be a lot worse. Still great machines. With some gremlins. Even my 2002 Yamaha Bear Tracker with its foot shift is smoother than a Honda transmission.

My 03 Kawasaki Prairie is an incredible machine. I know what you mean. And I agree with suspension uses…but the more expensive and complex suspension is on the value machine. Competition is good. Thanks for the post, great insight. 👍🏼

Well, if tsc gave me one to try out, I would probably give it good review also. But you have to be honest with yourself. Dependability? Service? Availability of parts? Come to mind. It’s cheaper for a reason.

Almost every ATV sold in the United States is built in the US, especially Polaris which has always been built here. The exception being Can Am which is Canadian. That being said, Massimo is much like CF Moto, a decent machine at a decent price. It won't be as refined, durable or as advanced as one of the more common brands. Component by component the Honda would edge out the Massimo but realistically, it doesn't matter. If the machine suits your needs then it's fine. You just won't have traditional dealer support like you'd normally have.
@JoeTheFarmer5 ай бұрын
Well; this one is technically "built" in the US, but the parts origin is China. Similar to other manufacturers. But, I would disagree with you on refinement. It is REALLY well put together. I have no dog in the hunt and I only agreed to use it on the channel, not to say nice things. But I am really impressed so far.

The important subject in comparisons is longevity, or, how many of one product can I buy compared to the price of the proven reliable product. My 86 Honda Big Red is on its 3rd generation of riders, has been abused but has never had a failure except for the normal wear and is still going strong, and that is only one of the many Honda products I have bought, all which never had the engines or transmission torn down. So how many of this product can I buy to one Honda would be my question? And are parts readily available? If I could buy 3 of these compared to the price of 1 Honda, or even 2, but I don't have that kind of money to gamble away. Most of the products I buy are from China because they are at least half the price of USA made and sometimes much better and far more advanced, but when it comes to big ticket items I take proven over questionable.
@JoeTheFarmer4 ай бұрын
Your logic is on point. And I am in the same boat. But the real question is; is a 2024 Honda the same quality as your 83’? I just don’t think it is. The Honda will have cheap electronics and wiring like all the others and I just wonder if it is still worthy of a 30-40% premium. Time will tell of course, but we will see. Parts should be no issue; the Massimo is a Linhai and they have been building bikes for decades. Thanks for watching!
