Absolutely! There's a really large one on Useppa Island that used to power the whole island with DC voltage and also served as a pump for the fire house. It has been many years since I saw it when I used to work out there but I believe they still show it during tours and during the annual croquet tournament held there. I was built in Tampa FL if I remember correctly. I always wanted one to run my old LeBlond engine lathe that was built in 1898 to set it up the way it was originally with a belt drive overhead. Came from a Ford motor factory. For now it lives with a 10hp electric motor and chain drive going to an old rambler 3 speed transmission that gives me many more speed and threading options. Just hard to beat the durability of these old machines :)

Hell no. And I work with a couple former Fairbanks techs that will say the exact same. It's cool how old they are and how some pre-date Diesel altogether, but it ends about there.

Don't you just love watching "up-and-down" get changed into "round-and-round?" And with a perfectly mechanical symphony behind the process?

LOLOLOL not even. Trust me, I'm a low speed/medium speed diesel tech. You'd be surprised how quickly these giants can die. However I have worked on an engine that was built by Rudolf Diesel himself, which is still in service...

Some of these older engines look like something designed by Rube Goldberg and are fun to watch and listen to. 😃😃

I think that any of the barrack family would love one if they don’t already have one. The barracks live in north east Scotland

I much prefer this tractor without the top cab. It looks old and ridiculous with it's sun umbrella. Looks really great when Wendall first rebuilds it without the rain and sun shield. It would with proper steering be very nice to take to shows and show off as a very unique and beautiful old piece of machinery. To tow it on a trailer would take a lorry to be safe pulling it. If towing 100 miles with a lorry it would consume quite a lot of fuel for the truck and tractor. Maybe as much as 60 or 70 gallons of fuel for a day trip and 100 if used for a weekend. Not cheap plus licensing and insurance.

I do not know the year these Fairbanks engines were build, but I can see some diesel engines here on KZbin from even 1800's I am pretty sure, these engines used some kind of oil, very different from today's diesel fuel. In those times the chemistry was not as sophisticated. Does anyone know, what fuel these machines used???
@mrc1539
@mrc1539 Жыл бұрын
Jiri Tichy, many of them were started on gasoline and then were ran on coal oil or kerosene. You can spot the oil engines because they will have two needle valves and normally some way to fill the carburetor with gasoline. By the time it burnt the gas out of the carburetor the engine would be warm enough to run on the oil in the fuel tank ! So one needle valve would be closed as the other one was opened.
