This was always one of my favorite songs of all time, but it has taken on new meaning and purpose in my life with the passing of my partner of 20 years this past March after a brief but brutal battle with lymphoma. On February 9th 1990 watching Tracy sing this in concert live in Australia I bawled my eyes out to this song. It had always been a favourite of mine and my husband’s. That night was the first time I had done anything social since he had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at age 28. My friend took me to the concert and it was amazing because I’m a huge Tracy Chapman fan but boy oh boy this beautiful song took on new meaning for me that night and to this day it still makes me cry. Thank you Tracy for your beautiful words that allow us to let go of our emotions now and then, you helped me navigate grief as a young widow with the raw and real song.
