I feel for T Mac. As a Laker fan, I would have gone nuts. Of course at first I would have been salty because they traded Eddie Jones, who was my man, for him. But long run, that would have been amazing. And T Mac saying he wanted to always be more Scottie than MJ, with Kobe always wanting to be MJ. Man that would have been perfect.

Yeah because it worked out so well for kobe and shaq ....... add another star level talent to the team and watch chemistry just explode since there is only 1 basketball.
@ImmortalDragon
@ImmortalDragon 7 жыл бұрын
Thing is, Kobe and Shaq's chemistry was actually great on court. There was more than enough touches. The problem wasn't touches, it was the discredit Kobe was getting with the "carried by Shaq" mantra perpetuated by the media (who still don't like him to this day) as well as Shaq (who had a lot of media friends). In actuality, the Lakers could've used another scorer as Kobe and Shaq had an aging roster and there was a lack of talent outside of them. Tracy McGrady would've alleviated a lot of the burden on Kobe shoulder in terms of playmaking, as there was no playmaker aside from Kobe. They were getting blitzed by the Pistons full court and wore Kobe out as he was the only guy capable of not being rattled by the defense. Fisher is not a ballhandler, nor was an older Gary Payton who was getting cooked at the other end by Chauncey Billups. T-Mac would've given them so much more than just having another scoring option.. if healthy.

reimixo Kobe was also upset that Shaq didn't work hard enough in the offseason. if Shaq had that work ethic maybe Kobe would have respected him more and be able to co-exist with Shaq. maybe Kobe gets traded and tmac stays with Shaq or Shaq gets traded and tmac stays with kobe. Kobe and tmac were both coming out of high school so they would probably have more in common. a lot of what ifs
@thomasforde3900

reimixo I’m not saying they’d defer, but in all big 3s (or 4s) someone has to make a sacrifice. If shaq and Kobe had watched T Mac allow himself to be the third option when he was one of the top 5/10 players in the whole league, they might have realised that “who’s team” it is isn’t really that important compared to winning. They could have won 6 easily in those 9 years

rodeocool You lose ALL credibility when you bring up CAREER averages. Forget to mention his career high is 17 assists in a playoff game. Forget to mention he averaged 6.5 assists and over 24 ppg in 06-07. Yaaah but for real you said you watched him.... Nah man you really didnt he was a TRUE point forward and whats crazy is his damn teammates couldnt make half of what he set them up for.
@toppa4504
@toppa4504 7 жыл бұрын
rodeocool No I just brought those up because youre talking like hes not capable because he only averaged 4 assits in his career when youre counting his later years which drop his averages alot. Tmac had crazy averages but his later years altered them. He was 4th ALL TIME for playoff scoring average but his last few playoff games as a non factor altered that. Thats kinda off topic but what Im trying to say is he was a true point forward. Back then even now it dont matter that Kobe averaged more assists or whatever because if you saw the two play like you said you did, everyone knows Tmacs court vision and ability to find the open man anywhere on the court was superior. Im not knocking but this was something evreryone acknowledged. He was able to feed guys because he covered so much court and being a dynamic offensive superstar that brings in double and triple teams made him a huge threat but everyone knows Tmacs teammates bricked half the shots he got them anyways.

oh don't get me wrong they weren't buddy buddy by any stretch but it's just funny people say its them not getting along is why it split the team up. if shaq could put his ego aside and taken less money as he got older and was very injury prone they could of kept the team together its shaq's ego that had him leaving penny in orlando as well, so where kobe did play a big part in the shaq and kobe drama shaq as well had his part and honestly phil doesn't get as much blame for it either he kinda gets lost in all the conversations of why it happened tbh

One thing Shaq hated about kobe was that they thought he was already better then Shaq, and Shaq always tried to put kobe in check. Shaq in away was worse then kobe. Kobe just wanted Shaq to match his work ethic and take it from there.

That would have been crazy. They ended up giving up Eddie Jones for Glen Rice anyway, so if you replace Rice (who didnt do much for them) with Mcgrady and give Mcgrady a year to get himself going, youre talking about a prime Mcgrady with a prime Kobe and Shaq? lol..They'd have re-defined dominance.

Jerry West....if we "only" had to give up Eddie Jones, this deal would have been worth it even in 1997 despite the emergence of Jones who at the time was the fourth or fifth best shooting guard behind Jordan, Richmond and Miller and probably on the same level as Allan Houston/Latrell Sprewell. If we had to package Nick Van Exel as well, then I would have said no. Had McGrady come to the Lakers, he would have been the perfect point guard for Phil Jackson. A tall guard who can defend multiple positions and initiate the triangle with the ability to push the ball uptempo and be the secondary creator along with Kobe that we always lacked until we had Payton for one year. If MCGrady developed the catch and shoot ability that Derek Fisher also developed (Fisher was not a good shooter when he entered the league), McGrady would have fit perfectly with the Lakers

McGrady for sure was more of a natural facilitator and even handled the point guard position well even in his broken down state in Detroit. Kobe could be more of a natural shooting guard and shoot efficient shots coming off screens/catch and shoots or attack the opposition without having to face the entire defense zoned in on him in the perimeter. I just wonder though if Tmac would have left the Lakers the same time he left the Raptors because he felt trapped surrounded by two selfish superstars who were handcuffing him from being able to fully display his talents. Maybe not though as the year he was a free agent was the first year the Lakers won a title under Kobe/Shaq. Even though Buss was very reluctant at the prospect of having to pay long term big money contracts to Van Exel and Jones, coming off a title win with a blossoming McGrady might have done the trick to signing him to a long term contract.
