Gilbert actually talked about this, he said Mark Cuban ran the numbers and the lakers would have been able to sign another max player potentially two in addition to paul basically lakers woulda ran the league for 6 plus years if the trade went through
@diegobromfield

Yeah I saw that. And what he said makes sense. Because in hindsight, a CP3 trade alone back then wouldn't have guaranteed Kobe another ring as some people think. That trade alone shouldn't have warranted the NBA going crazy to not make it happen. Kobe + CP in my opinion isn't a juggernaut. BUT Kobe + CP3 + 2 more active superstars? Heck yeah.

That KG trade would have been back in like 2007. Thinking back to the NBA landscape back then barring injuries only the Pistons and Spurs would have stood in the way of Kob and KG complete domination and I don't think any of those teams could have stopped it. That CP3 trade happened after the Lakers got swept by the Mavs 2011. Trade sent Pau to the Rockets and L.O to the Mavs and the Lakers got CP3. If that goes through I think we finally get that Kobe Lebron Finals. Again it wasn't meant to be.

The NBA work stoppage was resolved in early December 2011. Both sides agreed to season start on Christmas Day, the All-Star Game in late February, and the Playoffs begin in late April 2012. One negative result would be a 66-game season with a larger percentage of back-to-backs than usual. Another negative result was the short free agency period between 8-18 December 2011 would shorten deal-making time. In 2010-11 Season-end, Kobe Bryant was 1st Team All-NBA. Pau Gasol was 2nd Team All-NBA. Lamar Odom was 6th Man-of-Year. Entering 2011-12 Season, age 24 Andrew Bynum was an emerging All-Star Center. Age 32 Metta World Peace was still a good Defensive Small Forward who could make crucial shots in the Playoffs. The Lakers had a solid veteran bench. Chris Paul (CP3) indicated to the Hornets GM that he would likely leave as a free agent after 2011-12 Season. When a Star informs his team a year in advance of his unrestricted free agency, they gamble that they can improve the team enough to convince him to stay OR they trade him for the best possible collection of rebuilding assets. On 7 December 2011, the Heat, followed by the Lakers, were named NBA Finals favorites by Las Vegas oddsmakers. Since the New Orleans Hornets had a lousy ownership situation, one of the lowest per capita incomes of any NBA city, and one of the lowest fan attendance rates, the team would not exceed the Luxury Cap to sign free agents. Everyone knew that New Orleans was not a good free agent destination. Furthermore, age 31 free agent PF David West was healthy again and waiting to see where his Hornet teammate CP3 would be traded before choosing where to sign before 2011-12 Season-start. On 8 December, a 3-way trade involving the Lakers, Hornets, and Rockets sent out Pau Gasol & Lamar Odom for CP3 and left about $10 million in Laker cap space. Chip-hungry David West would most likely sign with the Kobe-CP3-Bynum-Metta Lakers and the Lakers could pay his market rate salary of $10m/year. Immediately after the NBA trade notice, Las Vegas sports books favored the Lakers to win the Chip. By definition, the Lakers, Rockets, and Hornets approved the trade. The Heat, satisfied with their LeBron-Wade-Bosh super team were unlikely to object to the trade. The Spurs, who had 4 Finals & 4 Chips between 1999-2007, were still an elite team led by Duncan, Parker & Ginobili. The Celtics were still an elite team led by Pierce , Garnett, Ray Allen, and Rondo. Both were attractive free agent destinations with no reason to object to the CP3-Lakers trade. Fearing multiple Lakers Finals & Chips again, however, a majority of team owners pushed Commissioner Stern to immediately cancel the trade for “Undefined Basketball Reasons.” When a player is traded, a GM no longer believes he improves their Chip chances. The canceled trade deeply hurt Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol. After the trade was canceled, Lamar refused to return to the Lakers. Lamar forced them to trade him on 11 December for next season’s draft assets. As a result, the Lakers were no longer an NBA Finals favorite. The canceled trade forced Pau to return to a Team GM he no longer respected. We know this is true because later in 2011-12 Season the Lakers offered age 31 Pau a contract extension with a No-Trade Clause and more money than any other team could offer. He would not sign the extension and looked listless at times on the court. Pau left in 2014 free agency. Once CP3 was traded to the Clippers, who had PF Blake Griffin in his prime, David West took the best offer on the table to remain a Starting PF. He signed with the Pacers for $10M/year on 18 December and became their starting PF. Another fall-out of the canceled trade conditions that influenced Kobe to play hurt. sooner than he should have. Kobe tore a wrist ligament on his shooting hand 6 days before 2011-12 Season start on 25 December. Doctors preferred that Kobe get surgery and let it heal before returning to play after 8-10 weeks. A non-surgical alternative that doctors would accept was to let the wrist ligament heal for 3-6 weeks without playing. Kobe missed the 2005 Playoffs. He was determined not to miss them again. So he took injections to play the first 56 games of 2011-12 Season. Doctors finally convinced Kobe to rest 7 games (games 57-63), before playing 2 more (games 64-65) in the season. Since Kobe valued Playoff health more than another PPG title, he DNP Rested the last game, allowing Kevin Durant to win the PPG title. Despite a “Less Than” Pau Gasol and no replacement for Lamar Odom that season, injured Kobe averaged 39 MPG leading the team to 41 wins in 66 games. That was remarkable because the Lakers exceeded 36 wins in the revision projected by Las Vegas bookies after Lamar’s forced exit from the Lakers and Kobe’s wrist injury. In the Lakers’ 2012 Semi-Finals loss to OKC Thunder, Pau underperformed and journeyman starting Point Guard Ramon Sessions was overmatched. The Lakers Playoffs ended as expected on 21 May 2012. The Should-Have-Been Lakers would have gone to the 2012 Finals and most likely won.

Kobe and CP3 have the most or tied for the most All-Defensive selections of all time for their positions. KG is top 3 all-time in All-Defensive selections, but behind Duncan in his own position. If that trio was together at once, it would've definitely been crazy. Although, it's not clear that Shaw is claiming that the Lakers would've brought both in together. These may have been two separate moves that each used some overlapping trade pieces.

Every once in a while, I'll be chillin having a great day, and I randomly remember that David Stern blocked that CP trade and I get angry all over again! And Shaw was a little fuzzy on the details, but that trade happened AFTER they won the 2010 finals; this would've put Kobe in contention for 6 or 7 easy. Also there would have been NO chance Phil would get dissed by Jim Buss like he did with this kind of squad on hand, so you wouldn't have had D'Antoni out here running his stupid 7 seconds offense all year and Kobe probably avoids that achilles tear lol I blame him for that haha

For people that dont understand why the trade was declined by Stern. The NBA owned the Hornets at the time amd was trying to sell it. CP3 was a up and coming star. He was the face of the team. The trade that was offered was the Hornets would get Pau who was on a expring contract. If you trying to sell a team the last thing you want to do is trade your main star for a aging player on a expiring contract that is not going to resign. It had nothing with them hating on Kobe. It was not a business move!!!

it was a 3 team trade - The details of a three-team trade are as follows: Paul to the Lakers, Odom, Kevin Martin and Luis Scola to New Orleans, and Pau Gasol to the Rockets.

If that’s the case then explain the KD trade to golden state. The NBA stopped LeBron from having the same amount of rings as MJ

@@Anchor7the NBA did absolutely nothing to stop another top 3 player in the world from joining the 73-9 warriors that had back to back finals appearances. LeBron doesn’t have the power of getting who he wants, this was confirmed by cavs management. You think he wanted Westbrook to the lakers? In regards to Kobe, the NBA owned the hornets at the time and didn’t want to get rid of their star player for their team, it had nothing to do with Kobe

@@pallani8471 Cuban admitted it had everything to do with Kobe AND the Lakers. (cuban led the way to push for a veto) Because after getting CP3 they had the cap space to sign two more guys that were all star caliber players. Also, the lakers wanted deRozan and bron pushed for westbrook. He wanted a ball handler. This isnt some secret.

@@Anchor7 LeBron pushed for Westbrook? I haven’t seen light of that before. And the league owned Charlotte’s team at the time. Any additional salary the team takes back would mean the league would have to pay that higher salary. They were trying their best to sell the team, and having a luxury tax team with veteran players who wouldn’t sell tickets wasn’t the best idea. I never heard any mentions of Kobe during that time. And let’s say the lakers do acquire CP3, they’ve now lost Gasol and Odom who were crucial for the inside presence of the championship teams for the lakers

Kobe still got to keep Pau who'd have been gone in the CP3 trade, and they ended up with Dwight and Steve Nash. So he still got his superteam.

@@tellymcneal2743 get out of here dude if Bron played with them they’d be a super team 1000% 🤦‍♂️ Jesus if Bron just played with Nash and Pau they’d probably be called a superteam 😂 Nash was old but Nash was always old. No one even cared about him when he was young. He led the league in assists and basically shot 50/40/90 the year before he joined the Lakers ffs so it’s not like he was old Vince Carter or anything 🤦‍♂️ and Dwight was the best big man in the league by far 😂 in fact the second best big man in the league was probably Bynum who they traded for Dwight. and they still had Pau, Artest and Kobe and that ain’t a super team? 🤦‍♂️ even the Shaq, Kobe, Malone, Payton team was a super team. Yeah Malone and Payton were old but they still both put up 20ppg the previous season and were joining a team that threepeted. So Kobe has had numerous superteams it’s just no one talks about them because they lost 👌

There was always some underbelly of the story as to why the league didn’t want CP3 and Kobe playing together. It’s possible MJ didn’t want Kobe to surpass his titles and, well he does have pull in the league. Just a hunch. But I always wondered what the deal really was.

People thinking this would work are clearly kids who think this is a PlayStation game. KG wasnt better than Gasol at this time and he wasnt even close. L.Odom was a perfect fit 6,10ft SF/PF who didnt need to shoot the ball 20 times and have the ball on his hands, unlike CP3 who needed thr ball .

I would've loved to see Kobe and kg to play together as youngsters who had the same hunger, loyalty and passion to prove naysayers and doubters wrong. The intensity in those practices would've been crazy and Kobe wouldn't have needed to tell kg to stay in shape because he was the ultimate competitor already. Yea Shaq was the most dominant at that time but he was a locker room bully with questionable gay antics that no one for some reason likes to be honest about or they passively joke about it Would've loved to see a trade with Shaq for kg, cassell, sprewell in the summer of 04 instead of the weak return they did get.
